Well, ATT TDMA and AMPS are still alive and making calls.

Verizon AMPS is back now it seems. Earlier today my test phone wouldnt connect on verizon AMPS even though there was a signal, but not it is able to connect again. Maybe they are slowly taking down the network today?

Analog Verizon is still on here, but now with 2 signal bars less.
Plus, VZW's analog won't even connect. It will just keep trying to call / redial, and it won't go through.

Alltel's analog still works like it always did here in Gaffney.

When analog goes its will be all or nothing. you will not see a signal at all.

When they kill analog more that likely it will be after 11 pm what time zone you are in.

All major upgrades and changes will be done between 11pm and 6am as it is a common maintanence window regardless of carrier.

I called 611 again today, and instead of getting a message saying that they needed my mobile number to route the call, I got regular Verizon 611. I did not try the A band to see what ATT was up to since I was unsucessful yesterday.

When I called 611 at 5 from my deactivated lg, I got the At&t line where people pay to turn their phones back on  At home, I got the normal AT&T CS, where they ask for my phone number...

AT&T still has the towers broadcasting, but no calls are connected, not even to 0 or 611. Verizon analog is still up and functioning.

Verizon analog is GONE here in Gaffney....Absolutely no Analog Verizon signal is reaching my phone.
I put the phone on analog only, for Verizon's SID 139, and there is nothing available, it was working yesterday.

Alltel's analog is still on and working at my house.

I read that Altel will be one of the last to shut it down as it converts.

I think it is unrealistic to think they can shut down the entire analog network across the country in just 24 hours as the news were announcing. This is going to take a while, maybe a few weeks. But it will be interesting to see how quickly they can shut it down.

As for my area I have both TDMA and Analog service alive and kicking in North NJ.

Let's keep on checking our old phones and post here when you no longer notice AMPS or TDMA signals.

I think you should check into the M800 new bag phone. It will hook to your external antenna and should work a little better than your hand held phone.

Thats interesting, I did not think they could deactivate anything without your permission.

There is no alltel, uscc in that area. One of my beefs with verizon is they use a 'closed' prl. If the sid isnt in the prl the phone is blocked from it.

You could have a great Sprint signal at your house, but Verizon blocks most Sprint sids.
If I were in your position, first I would go get Sprint. If it doesnt work take it back for the refund. Then go get att. att will roam on most of the gsm providers were t-mobile wont.

In fact....heres how to test that. Take your cdma phone and dial *22800 then *22801 , 02, 03 04 all the way up to *22806. Give it time to search.

This will go around the prl and tell you if there is another carrier that has service in your area that verizon is blocking.

If you hit one you will get something like, thank you for calling sprint. or metro pcs.

    *22800 & *22801 are for 800 mhz CDMA carriers (A & B)
    *22802 - *22807 are for 1900 mhz PCS carriers (Blocks A-F)

Sprint uses many PCS blocks, depending on what part of the country you are in.
    (usually *22802 *22803 or *22805)

Exactly, he can use this to cycle though the bands and see if there is another cdma carrier who has coverage at his house. If he had Verizon the prl would block Sprint etc. Its just an easy way to avoid trying a bunch of different carriers.

No, they can't shut it down that fast, but in my area ATT stopped connecting immediately. Their towers were still broadcasting a signal as of last night though.

You can drop analog real quick, but it will depend on each market.

If I did it manually I could drop one in about 3 mins if I did it correctly or 30 seconds if I took out the backhaul.

The carriers have a GUI for every network regarless of technology. Most of the GUI are based off of UNIX. What will happen is the carrier will write a script that will automatically run and turn off all the sites, depending on market could take a couple of hours.

When talking about this I am refering to the dual TDMA / Analog systems and the CDMAONE / Analog systems. The straight analog sites which there isnt to many of require more maint to turn them off. Most carriers have the newest dual mode analog at least 2G. The original analog systems more than likely will require a trip out to the tower, if you live in the mountains area that may not happen until spring as the site may be hard to get to.

Some carriers and sounds like Verizon is doing this, may cut just the calling capabilities but the network is still transmitting.

ARN for the most part doesnt having any Network assets but uses a carriers roaming capabilites on their billing system. So if you are a non registered mobile trying to utilize a analog network you do not belong to and the Carriers has an agreement with you may go to ARN automated system. Downfall to this is say the tower has a problem whos going to fix it.

I had an Alltel phone when I was doing some drivetesting for them, they didnt have CDMA running in an area I was in but I was right next to one of their Analog sites with full signal. I made a test call on an Alltel phone and it went to ARN and this was back in 2003.

I know how they can do it, and not have to pay a man to drive out there to shut it down. Just call the power company and say they want the electric service discontinued after a certain date... Once the backup batteries die, or the generator runs out of fuel it will be off the network... the analog tower is shut down with a simple telephone call.

Pfft I can kill all of our 300 TDMA/Analog Nortel sites in seconds.

Just kill the switch and everything would stop transmitting. :D

However we are keeping ours up till closer to the end of the year.

You don't say what job you do for what system. Also if you shut it off like that whats left for the carriers coverage?

    <------------- Where I am

And I am a Wireless Network Senior Technician for Plateau Wireless

Our main system right now is a Nortel GSM network with Next-gen as the future.

I am so ready to turn off all this outdated junk (tdma and analog) and move on.

this is not good for me, im getting an ARN account.
one quick question, will the networks be just sitting there not being used? could they turn them back on if they had to, like if there digital towers were undergoing repairs, or if they got to many customer complaints about signal loss
