The tower work will depend on what they plan on implementing on the vacated spectrum. For the most part, to simply deploy CDMA2000 or EVDO the work will be done from the ground, inside the shelter. They may choose to upgrade the antennas immediately or simply do the required changes in the software and ground equipment to take advantage of the previously analog spectrum.

When you look at someone like att who is running 1 voice channel and 1 control channel there wont be enough spectrum freeded up for anything.
The only thing it will do is save on their electric bill.

Verizon is running 3 voice and 1 control, I don't even think 4 analog channels equal anything.

If the antennas on the tower meet their gain requirements then all they have to do is install the equipment on the bottom. It all depends on their plans. They may choose to swap everything out or leave it all in place and simply do BTS replacement.

Auction? Sometimes. With licensing needs some equipment will be returned for credit and the rest will probably be sold for scrap.

Most other countries are at the same level of wireless technology or higher. The carriers have long since depreciated the equipment accounting wise and the simplest solution for them is to sell it for scrap.

Many countries have very different frequency standards. Newer equipment can be cheaper to maintain and operate. and in some cases to buy.

OMG, that CDMA phone has the worst reception of any phone I have ever seen!!! I have one of those, and in rural areas it will say no service where my Motorola cdma phone have 2-3 bars. The motorola phone have better sensitivity, its most likely the antenna but there is no doubt they are better.

I have a few of those old startacs, those are really cool phones.
