I have noticed that calls made over the Verizon network from the NC Coastal area between Wilmington and Jacksonville, NC, specifically from Topsail Island, have severely degraded over the past several weeks. Prior to Verizon's entry into that area, while roaming on other services, the signal and voice quality of calls was fine. Lately, it is very poor, with calls received from Topsail cutting out and fading in/out. Perhaps it's the all digital (Razr) phone and the fact that Trimode is no longer available. Other's in the same house, one using Suncom and one using TMobile (which I guess is also roaming on Suncom) have great connectivity and voice quality. Has anyone heard of a reason why this might be happening in that area? I'm beginning to rethink my long relationship with Verizon since their service isn't staying compatible with my coverage requirements. Thanks, Brad
That's the way Verizon's new network has always been here in eastern NC... you aren't the first to complain about it.
Thanks. My experience exactly. I suspect that the problem has to do with Verizon's being "native" now in the NC Coastal area, no more roaming on the more robust systems that preceeded their moving into the Wilmington - Jacksonville area. They aren't too good in upstate SC either as far as my experience is concerned.
Vz doesn't have as good of coverage as some other carriers on the coast around Myrtle Beach. But for the rest of the upstate Vz has the best coverage. Matter of fact Cingular can't be beat at Myrtle Beach.
Yeah, Verizon use to roam on Alltel in the carolinas where there was no native service. Usually when VZW enters an area it is a gradual process and takes a while to build the network out (unless they buy someone that already has a network there.) I'd give it time, but if you let VZW know about it and it is still the same after a while then you should consider alternatives...
Thanks for the replys. As for the poor coverage, I suspect that short of actually quitting them, there's really no other alternative unless I want to duplicate my cell phone capability with another plan.
You can edit your NAM on your phone, it's a little work (10 minutes and patience), but you could use it when you are in an area where verizon has weak signal.....i've done it with my v710 just for fun, i also helped someone with a razr do it before...
I think most of Verizon's network in these areas in 1900mhz which, if the towers are not properly spaced, could be contributing to the problems. Influx of tourists for the Summer might also be creating capacity issues.
Agreed. This is probably the best option for the OP than he can switch between VZW native and ALLTEL with the push of a button in areas Verizon's native service is bad. I'm sure Verizon is aware of the situation there- their network in some of those areas is a new PCS network and they need time to completely build it out, but this is definitely frustrating.
Thanks strunke and Andy84094 - editing the NAM may be an option but as surely as I edit the NAM, my "NAM" would be mud and the phone would never be the same. The phone in question is a Razr...works very well in Northern VA but seems to clip words and fade in and out when in the NC Coastal area. I have noticed some improvement in Verizon's signal quality there but not much so maybe the new system and the vacation overload theory is the answer. In the places that I visit in both the Carolina's (Spartanburg SC and Wilmington - Jacksonville NC areas) the service is way better using a TMobile Sidekick than VZW. Since TMobil isn't native to those areas, I suspect this is due to whoever they roam with in those places.
That would be Cingular Wireless. They have built a solid network in the Carolinas, as long as you're on mostly main roads and in town. That said, it's still 1900mhz... I'm surprised it works better in Spartanburg. That's a Verizon 800mhz area.
It might just be the part of Spartanburg I've been calling from...it's actually Welford SC, pretty remote, and down in a hole to boot.
Did you want to try changing the NAM? It's hard to mess up your phone editing the NAM, all you have to do is write down all the different settings before changing, that way it you can put it back to the original. You wouldn't have to change the settings each time you switched either all you would have to do is go into settings select the other active line dial *228. Then you are all set...
Thanks strunke. I think I'd better leave well enough alone since (translation: I'm scared to mess with it). VZW seems a bit improved, at least in the NC area. Maybe they're still adding towers, or fine tuning their coverage in some way. Not being a cell phone expert, I continue to be amazed at how so much discussion surrounds Verizon's extensive coverage when, at least from my personal experience, TMobile seems at least as good and, in some places I go, actually better than theirs. I've been playing with a hand-me-down Sidekick (the Kick and the plan that goes with it I should say), and, except for the fact that it's dialing procedure is a poster child as to why one shouldn't use a cell phone while driving, the thing works great, both as a phone and as an email/text messaging device. Anyway, if there is an instruction about altering the NAM, I would like to have it just in case I get my courage up enough to try. Thanks again, Brad
They may be close in your area, but T-Mobile around the country with the exception of midsized cities is terrible. I'll make a quick step by step for you, I'm assuming you are trying to change the v710 though.... 1. Type this from the home screen "Menu 0 7 3 8 8 7 *" you have to do it relatively quickly. The security code should be "000000". 2. Scroll down to Extended NAM, select that, then select NAM 1, now write down everything in that NAM down. From the top to CDMA Network. 2. cancel out of that. Then go into the NAM 2 and input the information down exactly as it is in NAM 1 into NAM 2. You can skip the "True IMSI" it should update automatically. 3. Now, the SIDs for NC are: 00114 Charlotte, NC 00578 Wilmington, NC 01540 Sampson, NC 00100 Fayetteville, NC 00376 Jacksonville, NC 01542 North Carolina 13 - Greene 01544 North Carolina 14 - Pitt 01536 North Carolina 10 - Harnett 01532 North Carolina 8 - Northampton 01534 North Carolina 9 - Camden 02038 North Carolina 5 - Anson 01538 North Carolina 11 - Hoke 01528 North Carolina 6 - Chatham 00144 Raleigh-Durham, NC - Burlington, NC 00142 Greensboro, NC 01530 North Carolina 7 - Rockingham 00368 Hickory, NC - North Carolina 2 - Yancey 01546 North Carolina 15 - Cabarrus You have to find the closest one to you. It may take a little experimenting. 4. Now for the AMPS Sys ID and CDMA Sys ID you have to put in the corresponding SID from above into your phone. 5. Once that is done, go into Menu> Phone Status> Active Line>....from here change the active line the second one in the list. They should be the same phone number (yours). 6. Now go into Menu>Settings>Network>Set Mode....to Home only instead of standard scan. 7. The phone should say it is extended roaming. You want to now dial *228, select "yes" (left soft-key), if you put in the correct SID you will get the Alltel message. If it says activation unsuccessful don't worry about it. If the triangle disappears then it worked. 8. After you get the message the phone should quit roaming and show your phone as it would be if it were on VZW's network. Data services may or may not work while in NAM 2. You can as long as you are on the second Active Line and not roaming you are on the Alltel network. 9. To switch back to Verizon, just change the Active Line back to the first one. You don't need to dial anything to go back to Verizon's network, only when going onto Alltel's do you need to dial it. 10. Keep in mind that there are a lot of SIDs with Alltel for North Carolina. If you travel out side that SID's coverage area then your phone will show no service, even if there is an Alltel tower within reach. Enjoy! (this is all from memory with exception to the SIDs, let me know if you have questions.)
Why do I have to be the post whore? Andy's sarcasm was funny as hell! Jone's is the cut and paste post whore
Staying in Jacksonville, I have to say on base, there is a bad signal, there will always be a bad signal because the cell phone companies have trouble getting towers up on/or near military bases. Out in town I have no issues with my phone, most of Jacksonville and Wilmington is perfect. As for TopSail.... Verizon activated about 200 towers all at once when they moved down here. Now they are activating about a tower a week since. So just hold on a bit, the network will progress... keep an open eye for new towers in your area. Remember to update your roaming capablilities until then, dial *228 from your cell phone while you are on the Verizon network, and follow the prompts to update your phone, or dial *22892 to Update your roaming, or *22891 to update your phone software. -Hope this helps.
Thanks for giving me the update about the towers being activated. Hopefully, they will begin to produce improvements. It's a bit better now than when I made my original post. Now, if the hurricanes will just stay away.... Brad
