So I've been a devoted Verizon customer for over 4 years. I switched to them because, for my region, their network is rock solid. Cingular was my old carrier and I had at least 5-10 dropped calls a month. Anyway, I've noted over the past few months that Cingular is really offering some new and hot phones. They landed the iPhone deal, their webpage showing available units is impressive and the phones are all cool. Now, go to Verizon's website and their list of phones, Blackberrys and smartphones is less impressive. So, what's up with this? I know and truly believe in my heart that having a more solid network is what makes Verizon a better carrier, but I believe they are going to start loosing market share because of their lack of compelling new phones. Anyone have any thoughts on this matter?
I understand what you're saying with this post. I used to feel similarly. However, I decided that I would not leave Verizon because another carrier had "HOT" phones. Get a hot phone to look at and use as a paper weight or a profiling tool. ___________________ Scene You standing on your porch with the phone raised up to the sun>>"I've got the hottest phone in the world." Friend walks up on the porch admiring the phone>>"Dang that phone is smokin. How's the RF?" You>>"Ah, yeah, its's pretty good." Friend>>"Hey let me give you a call. Check out those tones." You, hesitant>>"Oh, Okay." Phone> Ring Ring > You, hands shake, bead of sweat on your forhead. You press the button. Whew a connection! All right!! Big smile of relief "Hello" Friend>"Hel-----" Phone>>>Dropped call!! Friend"----lo man that phone is bangin." You can still hear him only cause he's standing right next to you, but there is no connection on your hot phone. The call was dropped at hello. See now that is the price you can pay for having hot phones with bad service. End scene. ________________ Verizon always comes out with some real bangers eventually. Every carrier can't have all the "HOT" phones or the same phones at the same time. I always wondered why phone manufactures didn't make sure they had not only GSM phones, but CDMA phones as well. It's not a race and for me it doesn't matter so much. I know that Verizon will have some "HOT" phones soon enough. I guess I don't mind waiting. Every phone I've got from them I've enjoyed. I'm just saying be patient. It's the network for sure. I have the KRZR and so far no dropped calls. Actually I haven't had any "real" dropped calls in a few years with the phones i've had. Hang in there and don't be discouraged. Verizon has often seemed like the underdog in the hot phone race, but then they come out with something like wow.
Thanks for the replies. You're right, Verizon does eventually close the gap. I guess Cingular/ATT tends to draw customers in with their 'wide selection of cool phones'. I guess what's really got me worked up recently is: A. My 'New Every Two' date is approaching B. None of the current phones are catching my eye. I'm really interested in the smartphones and the Blackberrys. Verizon's selection is limited in that area. I love the look and feel of the Black Pearl unit, but VZW doesn't have it. Thanks gang.
Cingular has closed the gap in many areas as far as coverage goes. Each area is different, I'm in San Diego and my business requires me to drive around all the time. I only have one area with dropped calls and all the other carriers have an issue in that area also. I've had my BlackBerry 8700c since 2005 and it has provided me more productivity than any other device out there. I've got clients with the Pearl that used to be without (non-BlackBerry device) and they will never go without it. Dropping a call here in there is nothing compared to not having the right phone when you are a business user. Maybe a few years ago it was no big deal, a phone was a phone. Now, with the Pearl, that's kind of changed. Plus, if you step foot outside of the US, your better off on GSM. I can plus dial and land in pretty much any country and make a phone call without any hassles. Plus, isn't Cingular a little cheaper than Verizon? Bradley
Viewpoints on phone are always subjective. For me, I'm not all that impressed with Cingular's selection versus what they've had in the past. Their selection isn't bad or anything, but considering some of the awesome GSM phones out there, their line-up could be better. T-Mobile has improved greatly with their selection of phones, but they have far too many Samsungs (a brand I will never want to own again). I like Verizon's line-up of phones considering the 2nd class nature CDMA phones tend to be because of GSM's dominance. There was a time, a few years ago, when Verizon's lineup was pathetic and Sprint's was one of the best, now the situation is reversed. Verizon gets most of the cool CDMA phones long before Sprint. But again, my opinions are subjective...just my :twocents:
My observation is that Verizon's phones may be OK but their unapologetic and seemingly unending tendency to restrict users from making what is now considered mainstream use of their phones capabilities, for example Bluetooth and video/web access is going to be their downfall. I've been with them and their predecessor for over 20 years, however, my recent experience indicates that they are really no better than other carriers, coverage wise. In some areas where I travel, others carriers, T-Mobile for example, are better even though they don't have native coverage in those areas, as does Verizon. I'm not suggesting a switch just yet but I do think careful shopping is in order since it's becoming clear to me anyway that VZW is far from being the only game in town.
