Definately not as the phone is set up from the factory. If you were to go in and do some hacking to the phone's key assignments & the OS you may be able to do it. In the end I think it is more trouble than its worth. -Jay
what do you mean that there is know way of doing it by using the smart keys while the phone is closed. i did it once acciedently but i cant remember how
The process usually involves remapping the voice key to another function, like the smart key. The problem with that is you loose all voice command functionality doing this. I can't remember if remapping to smart or left soft will do it, but even if you can get into the menu there's no guarantee that you can actually read the messages. I'm only relying on info from what others have done to scroll through the phone's stored numbers while closed. maybe there's some crossover, maybe there isn't. I tried to find the original article on this subject but I can't. I thought it was on www.motomodders.net , but I'm not sure. -Jay
Yes, theren is a way to change the key configuration so that you could read text messages and perform other functions while the phone was closed. I can't seem to find it at MotoModders, either. Fitzy, you could look around the Knowledge Base and forums at MotoModders and I'm sure you'll be able to find it.
Yeah, I was searching the knowlege base for 20 minutes looking, and never found it. I'm sure Motomodders was where I saw it. I think it was titled "Search phonebook with flip closed" or something like that. -Jay
I'm pretty sure ManAlive wrote that guide and I remember reading it and thinking, "That's a lot of work just to save opening your phone up." It's still kinda cool, though.
Yeah, his goal was to go through the phone book w/o opening the phone and I thought ... Gee, why not just use the voice dialing? On top of that I think voice dialing was disabled when he did that too. -Jay
Oh yeah, that's right, isn't it. VAD is much better to have than scrolling through the phonebook without opening the phone, IMHO. With VAD, you don't have to scroll through anything.
Members of motomodders.net can search a knowlege base of articles on their website. It is a great place to start if you want to mod your Motorola. -Jay
The Knowledge Base at MotoModders.net has all manner of information for those wishing to modify their Motorola phones. The article about allowing the outer menu buttons to perform functions with the clamshell closed is there. I found it (finally!) under External Menu Fun.
Now that I've read that article again, I've realized its even more confusing than I remember! No wonder I didn't try anything there. The only thing that intrigued me was to answer & activate the speakerphone w/o opening the phone, but in the end I felt it wasn't worth it. -Jay
