I am looking at a Razrs on Ebay and I know the one they are selling now is the V3a (at alltel). If I buy and Alltel V3c can I get it activated on my current account?

I have the LG Scoop and after having it for 2 months I decided that it is too small. I like my sisters new Razr better. But a new one without being up for renew (which I'm not for 2 more years now) it is $260 i can get one for about $90 on ebay.

There's no reason why you couldn't. It's one that alltel use to carry and it meets their guidelines. A friend of mine still carries it.
Don't overpay for it though, the V3c model is more than a couple years old. If memory serves me correctly, it was a very early Razr that alltel carried. It only came in dull gray so it wasn't as visually appealing as new silver Razr's. So chances are you may still like your sister's Razr better than your own if you buy one. But if you do like the looks of it, alltel should activate it without any problem. If you don't like the scoop anymore, I'm sure you could make a pretty penny off of eBay for it, and you can turn around and invest that into a newer Razr.

The V3C might have some issues with Alltel's newer tech and a V3M would be a better choice. Make sure the phone does say Alltel or you will get scammed.

The v3m is a better phone: it has a better camera (the V3A only has a VGA camera, not great resolution) and if you ever want to use it for data it can run at EVDO speeds whilst the V3A is stuck at 1X speed

Get a v3m if you want the better of the two(v3c/v3m). Other than the Transflash memory slot these phones are virtually the same. Stay away from the v3a if care about using custom ringers, tethering or EVDO. And, not that it matters to some, but you CAN use any carriers v3m/v3c with Alltel. I been using two Amp'd mobile v3ms on my account for some time. They just have to be flashed. If you will use it for music in the least, get the v3m and if not already updated, get the latest update on the phone. The mp3 player is much nicer and you can use the v3m as a media(removable) drive.

Thanks guys! A few more questions. I heard that you can only use an Alltel phone that was previously activated on Alltel. (but apparently that is not true from the post above) And you can set your mp3s as ringtone on the v3m? That is one of the things I hate about my scoop. I wanted custom ringers

Also I'm paranoid about Ebay, does this post look good? I really don't want to be scammed...

I would email the seller and ask for the IMEI number. Then call customer service and ask if they will activate that phone. Even though the phone is new, if it was stolen from a store Alltel will refuse to activate it.

Looks pretty good. If you click on the "purchases" link you can see who has bought one of these and read their feedback on the item. The couple I read sounded good. 45 day warranty is good. If they do give you the ESN number so you can check with Alltel to make sure it's clean and all, put the number in here and see all the info you want about that particular phone. Pay special attention to the carrier that it list. You would be surprised how many people "think" there using an Alltel phone when there not, or at least it didn't used to be an Alltel phone. (NOT THAT IT MATTERS)

Silly rabbit, CDMA phones don't have IMEI numbers, that's a GSM thing. CDMA handsets have ESNs or, in the case of the Motorola V3a, they have a MEID. The Motorola V3a was the first Alltel handset to have an MEID or pESN (psudo-ESN, which is an 8-digit alphanumeric number created mathematically using the digits in the MEID.)

At any rate, this is how the Alltel RAZRs are ranked in terms of features, etc.

    best V9m>V3m>V3c>V3a worst

Your best bet is to go with the V3m as it will be pretty inexpensive and have the most bang for your buck.

The V9m is awesome but expensive as heck.

And Jay is very correct. Get the ESN from the seller and check with Alltel to make sure it isn't on an account in default, meaning that you would not be able to activate it on your account.

Would anyone happen to know for sure if i can transfer and mp3 to the phone and then set it as a ringtone on the v3m? Without having to hack into it or buy a program.

The V3m is an older phone so it shouldn't be affected by the lock Alltel has recently placed on using non-downloaded MP3 files as ringtones.

I'm not sure if Alltel is sending this lock OTA for older phones or if it is only newer phones that are affected. To be safe I wouldn't dial *228 for PRL updates or phone programming purposes.

You'll want to do it manually by typing #073887*

I have two v3ms and both will allow me to set mp3s as ringtones. They also allow bluetooth transfers. The latest firmware installed on one, older on the other. If it has the newer firmware, it will come with Celltop as default and locked left softkey. This can be changed pretty easily as well. There's many posts that discuss how to remedy this.

So even if the newest firmware gets installed on it I will be able to set ringtones? I do not know what is installed on it. I bought it off of an ebay auction today.

Yes, I've had 0 problems using mp3s as ringers or transferring them to the phone for that matter. I've used bluetooth, trans flash and data cable to transfer them, no problems.

I got it today and did the ESN search. It is clear but, they marketed it as "new, never used for Allte." I get it, the back of it says verizon. At least it is silver like they said it was. But when I did the esn search it said it was a PINK verizon phone!!! What the hell!

Its obviously been put in a new case. Most likely you bought a refurb then.

I've seen this a few times. Sellers usually market their phones the same way they bought them. If they bought it as a new Alltel phone and it can be passed that way, they'll sell it like that. The words "new, never used for Alltel" I guess would be true if in a previous life this was a Verizon phone. Most of the phones I've seen like this are "new" not "brand new". Meaning the phone has been refurbed back to new condition. New housing, screen covers and keypad, and then flashed to whatever carrier they need it for. This is the same thing that companies like Asurion do with there phones. I've seen several phones that came from Alltel phone insurance claims that were actually not Alltel phones at all, but refurbed Verizon, Sprint or some other carriers phones. Is the Verizon logo on the battery cover or the back of the phone? If it's on the battery cover, I would contact the seller for a Alltel or blank battery cover if that bothers you. Or you could just contact them to see if they have a phone with no branding or logos. I guess bottom line, if your not happy with the phone, request a refund or exchange. If your ok with it keep it....

I am getting a refund. Except my $15 for shipping. The phones battery cover says verizon but I could have dealt with that. The fact that the 7 and end button have to be pressed really hard to get them to even notice i pressed it, i can't deal with. I am a heavy texter and need my 7.

Well, you'd have to check with Alltel to make sure the ESN is clear for activation. This just tells you the history of the phone and some warranty info. Yeah I'd for sure return it if it doesn't function properly.

I just checked the ESN on my Razr I bought on eBay came back as a verizon phone. it even has the verizon logo on the battery door. I'm not real worried that it's a refurb phone, it looks new to me and i can get a new phone from alltel in january anyhow. I'd like to get the Razr2 but I doubt I can since I just bought a car...so most money is tied up in that now....oh well. tax refund in 2009??
