Is T-Mobile or Motorola crazy! Okay. I just got a 720i through T-Mobile and was trying to learn how to use the text message feature that sends email. T-Mobile's customer service line informed me that all messages need to be sent to "500" with the email address manually typed out at the beginning of your message. This seems completely insane--you can't use the phonebook to look up and insert the address from the message screen! But they insist that that's the way it works. Is this true? If so, I'm cancelling this service immediately. Just to confuse things even more, some test messages I've sent have gone through, even the ones I sent BEFORE they told me this (ie, the address was in the "correct" location on the send-to line) AND some messages I've tried to send using the method they describe HAVEN'T gone through. Just what the hell is going on here? Is it the phone or the service provider? Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
well smack my arse and call my sally but i'm pretty sure that you do NOT need to put the 500. i used it a couple times as is and it worked. by the way... t-mobile csr... are a bit lacking... and i say that with respect.
When I was with T-Mobile (VoiceStream) that is how you had to do it. You had to have the email address as the first word of the text message, a space then your message and send it to the #500. Don't know if it's changed since.
To send to an e-mail address.. To: 501 Msg: joeblow@yahoo.com this is the subject / this is the body To send to another phone via SMS.. To: 17145551212 Msg: This is a txt msg
This may be true, but I have email addresses saved in my phone book. All I do is look them up and put them in the TO: field, then write my message in the MSG: field. I don't need to do 500 and all that jazz, but this is an address saved in my phone. It may be different if it isn't stored.
I have never used 500. Always just type the email address in. I figued this 500 thing was to support some older flakey phone that crashed if email addresses were too big. (??) Actually I REALLY wish they would get rid of it, as when you hit "REPLY" it goes to "501.. or 502" or something like this. j
Thanks for all the input. After a few days playing around with it, I think I've finally determined that it's T-Mobile that's got the bad system. Most of the time when I send directly to an email address it goes through--but "mostly" isn't a very good rating. This seems to hold whether I send directly to the email address or to 500. My addresses are saved on the phone too, but I don't know if that makes a difference either. It also plays hell with any attempt to REPLY to an email you've received. Just hitting "reply" doesn't appear to work at all, b/c it goes back to "502" or "508" or whoever with, apparently, no way of telling who you're replying to. VERY bad system. It's interesting especially that there's NOTHING in the user guide anywhere about this silly "send to 500" thing--are you supposed to guess??? Also, I finally got a real tech from T-Mobile to call me back (not a CSR) and she said positively "We ONLY support the 500 number sending--it can't be done the other way" and was totally shocked to hear that yes, in fact, it can. *sigh* I really like the phone otherwise, so I guess I'll keep it, but this is all very annoying. I may just use the IM feature in the browser instead. Thanks all,
