Is my E815 toast?

I purchased my E815 while I was working at an agent location in May '06. I have loved this phone, and treated it lovingly. It still looks nearly brand new except for a few wear spots on the faceplate by the camera.

About a week ago I started switching over to covered roaming (verizon) towers, dropping calls, being unable to send text messages, and due to the phone working so hard to find towers: drastic battery life shortage.

I waited a few days, and then I called tech support. They told me it was the weather in my area (Wichita, Kansas) So I waited a few more days, and then was told to go to a retail location and get a firmware upgrade (I assume that's what they mean by flash the phone.)

At the retail location, the rep tried to do a PRL update a few times, and then attempted to do the upgrade. He said it wouldn't take, and then promptly moved into salesman mode noting I had no contract and there are great new phones to buy! My phone appeared to have been given a Master Reset, and considering the other rep was sampling the MP3's on the customers phone he was working on, and I heard one of mine start to play at one point, I wonder if I was :censored:$@^@#$^@#%:censored: over.

My phone charges great. I've never had the terrible prong issues that seem to plague everyone. (Keeping the port clean and not pulling on the cord seems to do wonders :D) My phone works with MPT excellently.

What do I do? Do I have to shell out $400 for a razr2? (I abhor contracts)

Sounds like it is toast, and yes if you want a razr2 without a contract you are going to need to shell out 499.99 for a razr2. I was sad when I had to give up my e815, it worked great but had software and charging issues after about a year. Great phone though I wish I could get another new one.

Try this, dial *22800, (start activation, Yes) if you hear 'thank you for calling alltel...' go ahead and update the phones roaming services. If you hear 'welcome to verizon wireless.....' hang up and dial *22801 and repeat.

The '00' and '01' will force the phone to the A side carrier or the B side carrier.

See if the phone will take the update. IF you cant get alltel, IE, *22800 does nothing and *22801 is verizon, it may very well be that the tower in your area is down.

This should tell you if the phone will take the prl update AND if the alltel signal is alive and well.

I took a look at the map and it looks like your are going to be 'B' side so it should be *22801. Give it a try in some other areas and let us know....

So far no luck. Occasionally if my phone has been sitting for a while and I open it up I will see the red EV symbol instead of the D with a roaming triangle. Unfortunately as soon as I attempt any sort of a connection, text, call, prl update ... it goes back to roaming.

I live in Hutch. If you want you can PM me as I work at an independent agent and can help you get a new phone if you want. Or at least you can get native Alltel coverage to make 100% sure you're pulling off an Alltel tower if you don't know exactly where one is in Wichita.

    :)

Your phone might have vzw sid in the home sid somehow. Maybe you need to manually reprogram it.

The only thing you want to check or change here is numbers 9 and 10. Don't change the rest.....

    1. Enter 74663 + # + Menu + Menu (type them successively, close together)
    2. Select NAM 1
    3. Select MIN
    4. Enter MIN (usually your phone number)
    5. Press OK
    6. Select MDN
    7. Enter MDN (can be your phone number but alternate activation numbers are given at times by Alltel over the phone)
    8. Press OK
    9. Select CDMA Sys ID
    10. Enter the SID
    11. Press OK
    12. Press the Left Soft Key (Done)
    13. Select Exit; the phone will restart

You have MIN and MDN backwards. The MDN is the phone number; the MIN MIGHT be the phone number but is often different.

Yeah, but the phone works with either one in there. You don't even need to put in a unique MIN most the time....

The min is what the switch uses to rout the call and authenticate the phone. If the min is wrong the phone isnt going to work at all. You should get the we cant authenticate your phone error. Or that american roaming network deal

Whenever I reprogram my phone manually or the u prepaid one I've only put in the phone number for both and it was fine. No american roaming network. I know the post paid line i had's number was different. But it still works fine. Even when i force it over to sprint or verizon. I believe the authentication thing is esn related.

Oh yeah also did it with my fiance's phone.

I just tried it and got the Sprint error message. Put it back and it was fine. Maybe it depends on the system.
I dont think this is the guys issue. the *228XX thing goes around all the programming/prl in the phone.

Yeah but he may have a VZW or Sprint SID in the home system.

If you add the 00 or 01 to the 228 its just like dialing 911. None of the phone settings or the prl matter. He can have that alltel sid neged in the prl, have the verizon sid programmed as home and have the phone set to home only.
If alltel is the 'B' side where he is and he dials *22801 it will blow past all that and the alltel system will program the nam and update the prl.

The only thing that matters to the alltel system is the MIN.
You can take a phone activated on verizon, program an alltel MIN into it and put load the alltel prl in it.

I do this all the time for the local rangers, their state contract requires they have verizon but verizon blocks some of the local areas that only alltel covers. I program my MIN into their phone, do *22800 (its 'A' side here) replace the verizon prl with alltels, then program their min back in.

I sometimes try Verizon's OTA (*22800) with my Alltel phone, and it has never worked.
Verizon always gives me an error message, "We are unable to program your phone at this time."
I guess Alltel phones only work with Alltel PRLs.

It would work if you had a Verizon MIN programmed into your phone. A number owned by verizon.

Yes, as a matter of fact. But the real question is - "Do you have any or are you just a wiseacre?"

Haha, well actually yes. I reflash e816's and sell them for alltel on ebay. As well as a few other phones alltel never carried.

I don't really like pimping my auctions unless asked specifically where they can get that phone or one like it.

So what's going on? A good option might be the KRZR.
