    Congrats Vf.

    Questions on the watch.

    1. Do the bands from the 3 fit the 4?

    2. Did you get the LTE or the GPS only?

    Thanks!
    1) yep. The live show said that and I confirmed it also.

    2) I did my dance on that question once again. Resisting the $10/mo att fee. Also figure it will kill watch battery time. And lastly, my iPhone is with me always,or 30 feet or on Wi-Fi. With the X smaller footprint, even more so will it be with me.

So, no LTE. Plus that only works in the USA.

One is an eSim and the other regular, correct?

Thanks for the info on the watch. I wonder if BB will do a trade-in for my AW3.

Right, in the US for sure. I think the Chinese market models use dual physical SIM cards.

The best part is that both SIM cards are fully capable, none of the typical LTE on one SIM only stuff found in your average dual SIM phone.

BTW, I think Pixel 2 last year had a similar arrangement.

@viewfly, remember how a few years ago AT&T would lock the eSim in the iPads? That's what I'm worried about with the new iPhone.

Thanks vf, did you do the trade-in right when ordering or is it a separate transaction? $175 is a great price.

I did right when ordering. They send a box for shipping back. That is the best. You can do it separate, I’m pretty sure. Get the new one first and then return the old.

I think you might get $575 for your X

You can practice on line, without actually ordering

    I know you did.

    $175 for watch

    $575 for X. $525 for my 7plus.

Yep there is a step in the ordering process. Give it a try in the Apple app.

Btw. Trumps new China tariffs would affect the Watch, not the iPhone. Don’t hesitate!

Lol vf I didn’t. I tried ordering while waiting for my train from Glacier Park back home. Unfortunately the delivery is now 10/12 - 10/19 and I will be out of town then.

There is no store pick either.

    PREPARING TO SHIP!

Due this Friday, for watch and XS...xtra special.

Have to say the pre order was very easy this year. Two days before the Friday pre order...Apple sent me an email to ‘pre enter’ all my info ( cc, address, iPhone model and color, memory) so Friday would go smoothly and my upgrade application was pre approved.

At 3am Friday, EST, I overslept, but 10 minutes late I got in fast, and it was done. Everything was checked off for me. Almost like they had already reserved one for me.

    Nice!

Vf, are you on the Apple Upgrade Plan?

My understanding is if you buy from Apple and are on NEXT, then the phone will be locked but on the AUP (irrespective of who the provider is) it will be unlocked from Day 1.

Then there is the SIM free version and for that of course you have to pay in full up front.

Yes,on the Apple Upgrade Plan. And yes the second part of your statement is correct, the phone is unlocked ( at least with ATT). You could pay upfront, but the upgrade is 0% loan.

I don’t know if NEXT still requires locking. That was true a few years back. Don’t know if is still that case.

Since NEXt and AUP are the same (well Apple requires AppleCare), I’d never go NEXT. Even their managers say it is poorly run...one learns at the time of upgrade. You probably remember my story.

It is true that both Next and AUP are 0% loan but if I'm not mistaken both incur the carrier "upgrade fee". That's why we now pay upfront for the unlocked one.

$30 is in the noise for me. I think the question is whether or not all iPhones are unlocked, either via full payment or installments by Apple 0% loan.

    The answer is yes.

To cover all bases. If you pay up front, there is no SIM installed. And if you don’t have a number, then ATT will charge you a fee to acquire one.

Actually if you did that, would you have to use the SIM tray and not the new slot-less eSIM? So now there is no slot for your foreign SIM (or second number). I’m just guessing that to get ATT to activate the eSIM is going to cost you $30 too.

Anyhow, it’s in the noise for me.

I don't have a problem with the carriers charging a fee for a line activation, but when they charge it for the upgrade it's just them pocketing the money for nothing, so I try to avoid it on the general principal.

I've no idea how the carriers will work with the eSIM and whether changing that number will always incur the upgrade fee. As long as there's a fully functioning slot I don't really care though. Not sure why you're saying there's no slot for a foreign SIM. As long as there's a slot it can be used for a foreign SIM.

If one transfers their current physical SIM to the slot in an unlocked iPhone XS, and the one travels to say France, buys a SIM at a kiosk...where does it go? Can it be placed on the eSIM? Of course if you want only one card while traveling NP

But I wonder the same here? Will a US carrier place their info onto the eSIM without charge? Assuming your primary slot is already used.

I pull out the carrier SIM and place the foreign SIM into the slot, because yes, I only want one card when traveling.

If the carriers want to charge every time eSIM is programmed, that would give the fee some defence in my mind. I read somewhere that an eSIM is capable of holding several operators at once, but not sure how it all works, especially with prepaid. Also whether switching phones when replaced by insurance or repairs will also incur it.

Eventually I'd like to find out, but right now it's all idle curiosity for me.

There is a rumor that e-SIM will not be active right away and some update of iOS 12 later in the year will make it happen.

    Any truth to that?

PS: A dual SIM phone would be useful for me, however I am not about to take a loss of $500+ in less than 3 months.

I need more time. Slimmer. New watch face is gorgeous. Nice curves and edge screen. Loud speaker is noticed right away.

Apple is getting better and better on setting up these new devices.

I do love the Face ID!
