as much as i like the tilt (i own a 8525) with the Day to Day that i do, using a side keyboard is not for me.

    they are so different...

i picked the iphone based off the fact that though it has downfalls i am just more of a bar phone guy.

LOL Jay I knew as soon as I made this comment you would chime in. To me it is a larger phone that I would not like to carry around is all. For me brick, for others something else.

The iPhone is a novelty with some function, the Tilt is function with a tiny bit of novelty...

    Yep, I'd take both...:browani:

I picked the Tilt because of the keypad and the high speed capabilities.

Can you name some things, aside from padding Apple's wallet?

im not disputing. i dont even have an iphone and i do own a 8525.

however his statement is the same as many on this debate over function of phones. to me there is no phone that can do what every other phone can do. its pretty much fact.

so to me this thread is not a debate of function but of personal preference. saying that one phone does compared to another doesnt mean much unless both sides are considered.

the id take both part. definetly.

i think thats why i selected iphone in the poll. i already own a 8525 which might as well be a tilt in most respects.

I wish the Tilt had video acceleration and didn't look so ugly (chrome buttons, ugh). The TyTN II has a better look. If I had to pick 1, I'd take the iPhone just because I don't do much on my phone right now, and the iPhone does a few things REALLY well. The Tilt does a REALLY large number of things well.

Plus the phones are really different anyways, so its hard to compare. The iPhone is a touch based device with an OS designed for touch. The Tilt is a stylus touch device with a clunky OS that is based on pre-touch underpinnings. It's no doubt that the Tilt has better hardware and features, but the OS lets the iPhone compete.

Iphone is alright, but if i could go back in time i would pick the tilt over the iphone, because the only thing thats better about the iphone is the internet brower. And the option of WI-FI......good old wi fi:rolleyes:

I think the vast majority of consumers would key in on the size, weight, display, and interface of which the iPhone seems to have the advantage, not to mention that its an iPod. Cell enthusiasts are probably heavily tilted in favor of, well, the Tilt.

What kind of video playback performance do you get on the Tilt and what's the best player to do full screen playback?

Using Verizon I'm pretty much stuck with my basic phone, so this is all an exercise in envy for me.

I really don't view video on my Tilt. When I do I just use WMP. I mostly use it for making calls, GPS, internet radio, and tracking appointments.

GPS is definitely a killer for the iPhone. The demo I used in the store triangulated pretty well with Google Maps, but that won't cut it for nav. On my wife's Wing, Google Maps made a guess and we were still about 2 miles outside the circle of confidence.

Hopefully Apple will add a reall GPS and keep driving the market. I'm not sure we'd have phones like the Xperia, Touch Diamond, or Raphael if Apple hadn't put out the iPhone.

My wife wanted a PDA phone to run some software while at work (ePocrates). They have a WinMo version that will run without a connection, while the iPhone version right now is just a website. I pushed her toward the Tilt. She liked the Touch for its size and novelty. She said she could use the onscreen iPhone keyboard, but not the Touch keyboard. Once she saw the Wing, she wanted it despite the reduced featureset/speed compared to the Tilt. She didn't like the heft and size of the Tilt, nor the chrome buttons. The Wing's measurements are misleading. It's very rounded and the back tapers significantly so it fit her hands much better than the Tilt. Plus the Wing was only $50.

If the Tilt had come in girl-friendly blue an no chrome buttons, I'd have a Tilt with GPS to play with when she's not using it!!!! I'm hoping the Raphael lives up to expectations, and it would be even better if T-Mobile scores one.

The GPS is really nice. I am using TomTom Navigator 6. The Wing is a nice HTC device, but you're right, it does not come close to the features of the Tilt. I heard a rumor over the weekend that the Tilt is being discontinued for a new device soon. I have not yet confirmed this with my trusted source though. If she's happy with the Wing then that's all that's really important. You can always buy a Tilt for yourself.

The HTC Raphael is going to be announced as the T-Mobile MDA Vario IV in Europe soon. I imagine that is the replacement.
    T-Mobile MDA Vario IV

Just need a US version now.

I can't use my phone at work, so it would get minimal use. One of my phone features is the ability to survive in a parked car at 130 degrees for 9 hours, 5 days a week. :(
