my friend got the PEBL to use when he travels places that he doesnt want his iPhone stolen.................i programmed his iPhone with the MEdia Net settings and i need to figure how you set up MMS for AT&T cuz i think they use a whole separate web session for it........but how do you set it all up in the PEBL.....cuz its unlocked and unbranded.....

but back to my original question......having an iPhone and all he has the iPhone data plan.......if he puts his SIM in the PEBL will he get charged for data usage since the internet prolli isnt traveling through the same proxy on the PEBL as it is on the iPhone????

For setting up MediaNet and MMS settings on the PEBL, personally I would choose one of the more comparable models from here and then use the settings guide under the "Device Setup" section for "Internet/Browser Settings" and "MediaNet Settings". The menu options may not be exactly the same, but hopefully it will be close enough to be used pretty easily. And members here can then likely fill in any questionable items or missing information.

I don't believe your friend would be charged for data usage if he moves his SIM from the iPhone to the PEBL, as I'm fairly certain the iPhone data plan - while required - is really just an unlimited MediaNet plan with 200 messages tacked on.

However, and I may be incorrect about this or it could have changed since the iPhone was released - but I believe that in order to use the SIM from your iPhone in another phone (if you are sending it in for repair, etc.), that you have to contact at&t customer service and make arrangements to do so (?). If I'm correct about that, it may be easier to simply get a prepaid SIM for the PEBL.

You're welcome and no, I wouldn't think there would be any issue with the charges for data usage.

As it stands you can use your SIM with a smartphone/pda data plan provisioned to your account in any other phone (smart or non-smart). From a chargeable standpoint, If anything it would be going the other direction that I would expect at&t to be concerned with (eventually anyway).

But I am curious since you said his MediaNet is working in the PEBL - does this mean you were able to remove the SIM from the iPhone and it works just fine in the PEBL w/o any need to contact customer service? The SIM from an iPhone is as readily swapped as any other SIM now?

You can put a SIM card which was activated in an iPhone into any other compatible GSM phone and it will work. You will receive cryptic text messages for Visual Voice Mail notifications. On the other hand, a SIM card which was activated apart from an iPhone will not work in an iPhone.

so I am in the sort of same situation, except I am not going back to my iphone. Instead, I'm using my unlocked/unbranded pebl with my iphone sim. I've changed data plans back to normal & tried messing with the mms settings. Nothing will allow me to send or receive mms.

I still have my old sim that USED to do mms on my pebl. Should I take that to an att store & have them re-activate?

Sorry for the long post, just frustrated.

You cannot reactivate a SIM once it has been deactivated. You have to get a new SIM.

Do you think the problem lies with the SIM I received with my iphone? Like I said, before the iphone I was able to do mms.

Since the iPhone data plan does not include MMS, you have to get Customer Service to provision a messaging plan which includes MMS.

but i think what he's saying is he's already done all this....

i would say just call in and tell them that you need them to activate MMS and provision it on your account.

thats half of it...ensure the device is updated... give the IMEI of the device... press *#06# that will bring it up on the screen... copy it down...ensure the rep checks the messaging profile and data access point
