I've used Airdrop between macs at airports with no wifi connections between strangers. Works well. Sent from my iPhone 5 using Tapatalk
Funny. Have had a Mac for about 3 months now and have never heard of AirDrop until now. Oops Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I saw the little AirDrop parachute for a lot more than 3 months before I felt like researching what it was for, back in 2011.
Don't feel bad. I've been using a Mac daily since October 2011, haven't learned about AirDrop till December 2012
I can top that. I have been using a Mac since March 2011 and didn't know about AirDrop until this thread. Sent From My Mobile Device Using Tapatalk
I've also been surrounded by 6 other Mac users on the daily basis since November 2010. Turns out some of them have been using AirDrop all that time
LOL oh dear. I hope they haven't been passing secret notes about you behind your back! For some reason, Apple, over 30+ years, doesn't always advertise, in your face, some features. They just let people find them on their own. Anyhow, let's hope the rumor is true (although there is the InstaShare App look-alike). It was meant to be in a previous iOS upgrade but got left out. Bad news for InstaShare. But, with Samsung advertising heavily their 'kissy face' file transfer feature, maybe iOS 7 will actually have it.
Well, not using AirPlay if that's what you're getting at. Even the most devoted Apple followers here would use Adium for that But seriously, we usually pick on each other in the open rather than secretly -- it's much more fun that way - - - Updated - - - P.S. What's the "kissy face" file transfer feature?
Glad you asked. I was going to feel bad about not knowing what it was but now I don't have to. Sent From My Mobile Device Using Tapatalk
You know, when two S4's are slapped together for a file transfer. Sent from my iPhone 5 using Tapatalk
Nope, never seen an S4 up close, let alone two And when I did it with two GNexes I called it NFC beam and slapped phone butts together If the other 5 Samy owners are anything like me no wonder you don't know
The N2 has NFC as well. Although, I have no experience with trying it. Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2
Thanks dmapr and Joseph's, so it is NFC, that makes sense and I did know about it. I googled for "kissy face file transfer", and came with many interesting sites but nothing relevant to cell phones. Back on topic, I tried out AirDrop between my MBP and hubby's iMac, it worked very well from around 25-30 feet distance. Sent From My Mobile Device Using Tapatalk
You know it works from closer distances, too -- unless of course you have other reasons to keep away from hubby's iMac
Yes I do know that. Typically I try to stay a respectable distance away since getting too close to it usually means I would have to make it do something. I lost my excuse of "I don't know how it works on a PC", with the introduction of the iMac. I hope AirDrop on iOS comes with iOS 7 , I can see some good use for it already. I think that I'm right about this. AirDrop works via wifi, but directly between devices, so there is a limit to its range, with 30 feet being about right. InstaShare, an iOS and OS app, works either via Bluetooth, or Wifi, through your routers, but without a need for a internet connection. So InstaShare range is much larger, but still within your home or public wifi. I just verified that. InstaShare advertises itself as 'AirDrop for iOS and OSX'. Give it a try until iOS 7 comes out. instashareapp.com I'll have to check what sites come up on Google with 'kissy face'.
Ah, so you did pick up a new iMac for your even-more-now significant other! Seems that you are moving from Temporary to Permanent insanity! You must be all Mac at home now: (iPhone, iPad, Air, MBP?, iMac). Welcome to the garden.
lol vf, the temporary insanity refers to my iPhone and no guarantee that I won't stop by AT&T and pick up a WP or BB. I still have my old faithful Toshiba laptop running XP, and my SO has his Dell desktop for mostly MS Office. The MBA started me with Apple but I don't have it anymore, although sometimes I regret not keeping it when I got the MBP. I do like OSX not sure I like it becoming more like iOS, although I understand the logic behind it. So far the garden has been a pleasant experience for me, thank you for the welcome. Now for developers )) but yes for all else in fall. I think only iphone 5 supports airdrop Sent from my iPhone 5 using Tapatalk
Ah yes, I did get the dev notification from Apple. But it's dev preview for Mavericks and iOS 7 beta, not finished products.
That is a pain. At least your iMac, MBP and iPhone will make good use of it. Perhaps the InstaShare will be needed for the iPad. But iPad Mini's are very nice Yes, it does. Maybe it just means the new camera suite in general
