Well, I found that my opinion of iOS 7 has changed after using it for 1 week plus now. Even though I had it on a development iPhone 4, I didn't give it a fair shake, since it was hardly used, and 4 lacked the speed to show off all the iOS 7 features.

Maybe others can give their opinions after some experience.

I'll keep it short...with 200 new features, it is impossible to list feelings about them all.

    1. Upfront, the biggest change for me: the flat icons don't bother me anymore. Also, I like the crisp new fonts. I found choosing the background is important. Overall, I really like the look and feel of iOS 7.

    2. Still not liking the 'yellow' of the notepad or the blah of the reminders app look. Prefer the deep yellow line pad and the script fonts used. Calendar is good.

    3. Biggest change for me is that the whole concept WORKS, really well together. Seems snappy, well polished and all the little features just flow together very well.

    4. Things like locked screen Control Center, animations, fonts, new compass and level, built in flashlight, transparency, Safari, etc just seems to work even better together. Seems crisper and well oiled.

    5. Photos app is great. So is the camera new features. Maps now has night mode.

    6. Why did they keep the iBooks app icon the same??? Not complaining, but did they forget it? Not flat.

    7. Minor, but important detail: Love the new quiet beep when the power plug is connected. My wife would hate the sound of the old one...in the middle of the night. Also like the new unlock methods on even the iPhone 5.

So my early opinion about the looks has been overshadowed by the features and the iOS 7. Just took some time to get use to...and it surprised me in that I actually like it.

So what are you guys opinions...I'm sure not the same as mine, but just curious if they have changed too.

I guess what all this means is that the looks are important to me...but in the end, the functionality really wins out. I don't get too hung up on flat vs dimensional icons. Functionally, iOS 7 is really great with my other iPads and Macs so its a very productive platform for doing actual work. :)

Thanks for the great details, so I will take the easy way out and start with what you posted and then add couple of my own.

    1. I never had a problem with looks, to me it is a clean fresh look and now after using it for a week and looking at my co-workers 5 on iOS 6, his look heavy and old fashioned comparatively.

    2. I love the new look of the Note and Reminders :evillaugh but the calendar is sort of okay. I preferred the previous monthly display.

    3. I agree everything flows very well.

    4. The Control Center is by far my favorite and I keep wondering how I ever did without it.

    5. Agreed on the photos app, I haven't had a chance to try out the new camera features yet.

    6. I don't get the iBook remaining the same but it doesn't bother me.

    6. Agree with you on the subtle beep, the previous one was way too loud.

Couple of items that are bothering me:

    1. The weather in the notification canter now gives a vague text, previously it was the now conditions and I could swipe to see the 5 day forecast. See picture.

Am I missing a setting to turn this feature on?

    2. The calendar Today view is less visually appealing and doesn't pop out.

In general I love iOS 7 on my iPhone 5, specially the smooth and fluid WP type animations, however it appears to be not so smooth and quick on my ipad2 - yes I realize it is 2.5 years old. :) image.jpg

    Charlyee,

The missing weather feature is a complaint I've seen too. Now in the weather app you can tap the temp and it will give humidity etc.

Did you notice this in Celluar? Separates roaming vs local data usage.

Thanks vf, hopefully there will be an update bringing the previous weather features back.

I did notice the separate Roaming data usage, an excellent addition for the next I go out of the country. :)

PS: something I just discovered - tapping the search symbol in the calendar brings up a list of all ones engagements like an Agenda view.

    It wasn't there before? :)

When we were leaving Russia I went into settings on my wife's iPhone to make sure data roaming was turned off :) Didn't even occur to me it wouldn't have been there had she not updated to iOS 7 :)

There was only one data counter before, so you would have to manually reset the counter just before leaving for the trip to capture the roaming data and then reset it again after being back in home coverage.

That sounds too complicated. If there wasn't an option to turn off data while roaming I would've just turned off the data altogether :)

Not sure I understand your English. Turning data roaming on or off has always been there. The parallel data roaming counter is a new feature.

When I leave a foreign country I just leave data roaming on. There is no point in turning it off.

Nice catch on the calendar Charylee.

A, I see. Didn't realize you were talking specifically about the counters, since I never had any use for them :) I agree there's no point in turning the data roaming off when leaving a foreign country, but we were leaving the home country at the moment :)

    Thanks vf,
I am guessing dmapr meant to say "When we were leaving for Russia"? At least that's what I presumed he meant. :)
Btw, I have my data roaming turned off even when I am in the US, just a habit I guess. Overseas of course I turn it on in an as needed basis.

It does seem like Apple addressed a lot of little complaints along with some bigger changes.

I like it much more than I expected.

Still wish they would make the yellow a deeper shade in Notes and Reminders. But it's a little thing.

I haven't fooled with SIRI enough yet to see the impact if that.

AnthroMatt and others: what's you're take now after a week?

As I said the compass is much more useful now. esp. the calibration is so easy. Also the level on the next page.

Anyone getting nausea from the screen? :). I'm not but it made the news.

I love that I can put the newstand into my "junk" folder now. I never use it, and now I don't have to see it. Silly that I think that is one of my favorite new features.

Control Center is great...I really don't understand what took them so long to incorporate it into the OS, but I am glad they did. I especially like the music controls.

Like VF, I am not particularly fond of the Reminder and Notes icons, but I think they fit the scheme. To match the rest of the iOS 7 feel, if they kept the notes icon yellow I would probably hate that even more because it would need to be obnoxioulsy yellow to fit in with everything else.

The weather thing does not bother me, if only because I still really don't use the weather app (that's in my junk folder too). I just open up Elecont to see the current conditions.

The photos app is much improved.

The camera app is almost too quick. I can never tell that I have taken a photo now. Lots of duplicates now. Hee hee.

I like everything about the new calendar.

It seems like swithcing from regular speaker to BT upon getting in the car is more cumbersome now. I always get prompted on which audio to use. Before I would have to select the audio option, then select which method I wanted. If I am connected to something via BT, that's probably how I want to talk.

I have not used Siri yet...so cannot comment there.

Maps app is still too inaccurate for regular use. It has tried to take me to business that I know have been closed for well over a year. Street names that have changed and have had those changes reflected on Google Maps for months are not up-to-date in the Apple Maps program. And I have reported them dozens of times. I pretty much use it for traffic information only. If I need directions, I use Google.

No nausea here, but a coworker of mine complains about it. I don't really get it...but I also don't play with my phone near as much as she does.

All around, I think it was a welcome, and overdue, update.

No, I said what I meant. Our flight from Russia was through France and I didn't want any data charges, but wanted her to be able to send/receive SMS if necessary.

Ah I get it now. I presume you went through my airport?

I love the personal message to me - "Welcome to CDG" :rotfl::rotfl:

Vf, no nausea here. I am using the still of a dynamic wallpaper, not sure if that has some impact.

The music controls in the CC are fine. We did have them in iOS 6 by double clicking the home button and scrolling to the left...there were music controls there.

And also in the lock screen, if music was playing already.

The WiFi in the locked CC is of great use to me. I understand Android had that ( or equivalent in unlocked mode) for a long time, and this is one area that iOS 7 addresses.

One question that I've always had, and I haven't encountered it yet in iOS7: what happens when you are in an unknown WiFI area? Does the lock screen go to the settings mode and let you select a new WiFi?

I assume something like that must happen, and then it becomes the same multi step process we always had.

    Any experience?

I don't get the nausea thing either, although I appreciate that some have different thresholds than I do here. However, isn't the slight movement I see on the iPhone the same as moving me head left/right looking two objects, near and far, in my room, or out a widow pane?

Anyhow, minimizing it within settings seems to make it go to zero for me.

Maps seems very regional. On the eastern coast of the USA here, Apple maps is as flawless as Google, for directions. And I prefer Apple maps. I've used it from NH to Florida. Maybe less so for finding restaurants and such.

But I understand in some foreign countries it is awful...and I guess where AntroMatt lives too.

Of course :) Although I have to say, I find your airport to be rather bizarre. You take a shuttle to go between the terminals and you take a train to go between the gates in the terminal...

P.S. I'm the opposite of you with respect to data roaming: it's always on when I'm in the country of origin and it's always off when abroad.

Yeah the Maps app is still problematic at times. I was shocked when it was inaccurate in the SF area, being as that is Apple's home turf. It had me exit the 101 and make three right turns and get back into the 101. Repeat. Repeat. All while I was just trying to find a Walgreen's.

Oh one more thing...if Apple can make a clock icon with three moving hands, why no dynamic weather icon to display the current temp?

Well the dynamic weather would be the pull down top notification center? Or maybe Apple would feel badly duplicating the HDweather App?

Seriously, it is a good question. I don't have a solid answer. The clock consumes no power, since it comes from the iPhone clock.

A weather badge would have to poll an internet source and GPS perhaps every few minutes or whatever to be up to date...thereby relying on an external server and power consumption of the GPS... i.e. a widget of sorts.

But you would think it could be done with options for the user to control, like HDweather app.

It may be that the current weather and temperature in the pull down notifications center, Apple feels, already gives you that information, regardless what App or page you are in. The Apple weather method, only polls the GPS and weather, when pulled down and is not a constant battery drain.

Just some thoughts. I turned off the badge display on HDweather a while ago. The Notifications weather updates works out better for me, since it is accessible from lock screen and everywhere, while HDweather is only a badge display. The Apple weather in Notifications gives the current and high temperature for the day.

Yeah I don't put the HD Weather badge on either, just because I rarely am just looking at my home screen.

Since the old icon always showed "73" (or whatever) without a badge, you'd think it would be possible. But whatever. Not a big deal by any means, but it would be a nice little enhancement.

Slightly OT weather app related questions:

    1. Does the built-in weather app give alerts like eWeather HD does? If so how do I set it up?

    2. The built-in weather app only shows under location services in Settings. Is this how it is supposed to be?

I don't have the home screen badge activated either anymore. You have to choose a city so somewhat meaningless when I am not in my home city.

    Thanks much :)

There is the Amber and NWS alerts, but nothing else to set for the native weather app for alerts. The native one is fine for weather, but I often use TWC (the weather channel app) for more details.

Saves a lot of arguments with the spouse, since different sources give different forecasts ;)

Thanks vf, yes the built-in weather app is pretty basic. I use eWeather HD and it's excellent, it provides weather alerts that I need - thunderstorm, blizzard, flood, hail and whatever Mother Nature decides to bring to us. The prediction and alerts are extremely accurate as well.

I like to do with built-in apps as much as possible and was very happy to see the flashlight one built-in finally.

Similarly I would have liked to use only the built-in weather app but it's not a full feature weather app as of now.

I doubt the notification view will ever be more than at a glance indication.

Tapping gives more info, and tapping the temp gives some more details. See below.

I think HDweather, TWC or other apps will always give more maps and details.

Btw my mini Ipad seems to be fine in iOS 7. Retina ipad too. Seems pretty fast.

I don't need the notification view or the app to give me more information than it does now.

However I do need the weather app to give me visual and sound alerts of potential weather situation in the Notification center and on the lock screen.

Interesting the weather app is based on Yahoo weather and I believe the Yahoo weather app does send alerts, so it shouldn't be too hard to incorporate the weather alerts in the built-in app.

    Just my 2 cents. ;)

I like how ios 7 gives a history of the app upgrades now. Mostly, I upgrade without reading what the update really changed. Now I can go back and take a look. Not sure how far it goes back. A week or two? or via a number of apss.

I have to admit that I didn't care for it initially since I always checked what the update was for and didn't like the clutter on the update screen.

Now I have it on auto update and do find it useful to have the list available.

I believe it stays for 2 weeks, I will find out after tomorrow, my first couple of app updates were on 9/21.

It is two weeks. The updates from 9/21 dropped off sometime today and expect the one from 9/23 to drop off in a couple of days.

Good observations Charlyee: 2 weeks of info on app updates.

Just discovered something: Now you can have unique Signatures for each email account! I think that is new.

I also like how I can swipe up and dismiss email alerts at the screen top. Esp. if there are a lot if them!
