(This is a collection of pointers to their earlier reviews, so nothing really new here, but nice to have it all in one place and with a reasonably consistent rating system. - SW) InfoWorld's guide to the best mobile devices iPhone? BlackBerry Storm? Windows Mobile? Let us help you decide By InfoWorld Test Center staff December 30, 2008 The iPhone started it, but everyone and his brother now seem to have a fancy smartphone on offer. If it's time to join the "mobile 2.0" generation, the InfoWorld Test Center can help you make the right choice. We've reviewed the new generation of mobile devices and sussed out their strengths and weaknesses. Here's what you need to know about each of the top contenders. Our tests rank the iPhone 3G, BlackBerry Storm, T-Mobile G1, AT&T Fuze, Palm Treo Pro, and HP iPaq 910c in a near-tie, with scores ranging from 8.3 to 8.6 on our 10-point scale. So clearly they're all worth considering, but they do have real differences that will determine which one is right for you. More... SW
Hey my Treo Pro is up there. I am happy Maybe you should get a Treo Pro Steve. Yes I know it is WM OS, but it is Palm. Palm850/v0100 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.11)
No, it's still probably going to be the G1. I'm sticking with T-Mo for now. The cheap option in all respects. SW
Well the TP is unlocked & unbranded, so you could use it on TM. Ofcourse no 1700 3G. You are right, the G1 would be the perfect choice for you. Palm850/v0100 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.11)
Since the ratings were all in different articles, I did a bit of cut and paste and put all the ratings in a table. Rather than mess around with trying to get everything to line up in HTML, I'm putting it up as a screenshot. Please no griping about the colors, I'm not a graphic designer. SW
Thanks for doing all the hard work Steve. Dumb question, what is "Extensibility"? Palm850/v0100 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.11)
You're welcome - it was actually easy. The hardest part was checking that I had pasted everything into the right place. I think it just means - Can you add stuff? Are there lots of programs for it? Can you modify it to your liking? SW
Ah! I get it thanks. Why didn't they just say "Hackability", I would have understood it perfectly then. It does make sense that the iPhone would have a lower score in that category. Palm850/v0100 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.11)
I noticed that, but I'm not sure why the Win Mobile phones are rated lower than the G1 or the BB on that metric. There is certainly more stuff out there for Win Mobile, and some of it is even good. The G1 may be the best of them all for hackability, but personally I think the ratings should be from the perspective of a normal consumer who might want to add some programs, not from a programmer's perspective.
