Newbie here, I've been tasked with recommending a solution to improve the lousy reception in our new office -- ASAP, of course. We've only just realized the extent of the problem, with severe dropouts that are killing us in parts of the office; vendors are stuck downstairs waiting for people to check them into the building, and time-sensitive info relating to the build-out isn't being delivered. Some salient points: *It's probably not practical to get building approval for an exterior antenna -- there's unbelievable bureaucracy involved, as we're next door to the NY Stock Exchange -- so if we need an external antenna, we'll have to stick one in or near the window with the best signal *It should be a dual-band solution, no Nextel support required *We're mostly (Verizon) Blackberry users, and will need to support several (15+) simultaneous users *We're on a single floor, approx. 150 x 150 ft., mostly in one large room. A solution should provide good reception within 50'-60' of the internal antenna. *We don't have a good map of the office dead zones are yet, just a rough idea of where coverage seems to be worst Any guidance is much appreciated! You might be a find a use for the Verizon Network Extender. You can read more about it here. Each one needs up to 0.3Mbps on your LAN (100 or 1000 Mbps), and out the WAN to your ISP. They also need to be near a window to receive a GPS signal, to be sure they're inside Verizon Wireless's license area. External GPS antennas are available that could permit the Extender to be further from the window. You could start with just one, as a trial. Of course, It's VZW only; you said no Nextel. COtech
The problem with the "Network Extender" is that it only allow up to 4 simultaneous users. So with that being the case, I would recommend putting a device as central as possible to the workstations of 3 or 4 people. That way, each device can be assigned to these 3 or 4 people only (phone numbers are assigned through an online device management page)... so that they are guaranteed to have cellular reception close to where they work in the office. Unfortunately, I don't think it would work very well to allow every Verizon phone number in the office to access EVERY device... it will be a big mess. In imagining the office floor, I would say that putting 2 devices on every side of the office floor (if it's 150x150) would "break up" the office dimensions into thirds, and would provide good coverage to most of the office floor... but the very center of the office might not be able to pick one a good signal without a direct line sight of a device. So mount the devices in high points of the office (near a window if possible - because I suppose it is necessary for the device to work). So given that plan, that would be 8 devices along the perimeter of the office. BUT if not everyone has a verizon phone, they don't need a device close to their workstation, etc. etc... The devices are $200 each. So if you can make it work with getting 4 or 5 devices (16 to 20 users total) it just might work... It's not very convenient or economical, but it MAY be your only option. HOWEVER, call Verizon!! Explain to them your situation and they will be more than happy to assist you in getting what you need.
a space that large would require a professional strength amplifier . Also you need to overcome the politics and get the donor antenna outside in an area that gets a good signal . We have the equipment that do the job for you but you need an antenna outside to feed the amplifiers a good signal to amplify and rebroadcast.
