I was at a Cingular store in my town and the lady there went on a special website and showed me EXACT coverage of the area. I was pretty impressed. I think she type in some special username and password to access it. It showed high, medium, and low coverage represented by different shades of green on a map.

    Can I do this too?

No. I believe that only employees have access to this type of map.

Someone can correct me if I am wrong.

Yeap....That's called the MTI Tool and it is only accessible through their intranet in stores. You can't even connect to it from the Internet.

Why can't the general public access this? Wouldn't it be to Cingulars' advantage to show customers where they can and can not get a signal? Just a thought.

BTW, how do they get this VERY accurate information about where their coverage is located? When I looked at it, it had street by street detail about how strong or weak the signal was in a particular area. I was very impressed!

My home was located in the MEDIUM signal strength category. What does this mean to me in terms of clarity, missing calls, and so on?

Was AT&T - now Cingular - oops, now AT&T again.
MUHillbilly - excellent questions! I, too, await the answers.

In addition, will Cingular print a copy of the detailed map for you?

Because they know where their towers are, and what the surrounding landscape is like. I would guess that they also run a lot of tests.

What I don't understand is why they can't make this information available to customers. T-Mobile has extremely detailed maps on their site. You just put in your address and off you go.

They don't make it available for competative reasons...they don't want the competition building out coverage to cover their weak spots.

Imagine if your were marketing in a small town and you knew exactly where your competitor was weak, you would make yourself stong in those areas to capture their business.

It's really ironic because just a few days ago everyone on the Internet was able to access information from Cingular's Sales Portal about the UMTS launch because it was not secured in any way, however when it comes to show information that can be made public anyways then they secure it so you have to go to a store to see it. Makes no sense!

When I was trying to decide if Verizon would work for me, I wanted to be absolutely sure it would work in a campground in western MD. I went in to a Radio Shack store and a sales rep at the Verizon booth was able to access a coverage map that showed coverage, even with Verizon's roaming partners, right down to the street level. From the names of the streets, I could easily see the campground was covered. Had this information been available to me via the Internet or Verizon's website, it would have saved me a lot of time and gas trying to determine coverage.

I with you guys. I'd love to see an exact cingular coverage map of where I live. I live in a pretty weak area but there is about a 6 mile area on the parkway here in KY where I like that has no signal. I'd like to know where all of those are for when I travel.
