So after 24 hours I like it more than I thought I would.

I believe my Fitbit laid the ground work and showed me it can be useful and fun.

I don’t claim to have everything figured out but definitely what I am going to use the most. I am going to put a screen protector on, as I mentioned I really scratched up the screen on my Fitbit and wouldn’t want that to happen here.

Some details - it’s the silver aluminum with the fog band. I love how comfortable the band is but not sure about the color. At some point I need to get a dark grey or black band.

I installed AutoSleep and Calcbot. Calcbot is the only app in my doc.

Here is how I set up my watch face for now

@charlyee. Congratulations! And I hope that you enjoy and love it!

I knew that my nightly chants over candlelight and hex signs would influence you to get a watch again...something that you would swear never to own! Haha...Just kidding.

I tried a screen cover for a short while, and hated it. Over. 2+ years with the aluminum version I got only one minor scratch, that was easily ignored. Just for your info. I hope you got Apple Care for it. I do admit it is a highly visible accessory that could get damaged or whatnot.

    Enjoy!

@viewfly, aha so that was you, I did keep hearing this voice urging me to get an Apple Watch :D.

Thank you, I am enjoying it so far.

What are some of the things you most use it for, some tips and tricks would be great.

    Thanks much.

@charlyee personalization is one of the great features of a smart watch over a more focused fitness watch.

Here are some of the things I use the most. There are people that will say that all f this I get on my phone...well I can tell you it is more functional and easier on a watch!

In addition to emails, iMessages, calendar alerts, I turn on my news service alerts from select newspapers and cable news. Not all. Especially these days, having those come in during busy times has been useful.

Dark Sky or other weather alerts has been great. Getting a few minutes warning of rain coming has saved me.

Travel alerts while flying and such is very functional.

Setting the timer via Siri...great during BBQ times.

Golfing. It’s becomes a GPS yardage course device. Very great!

Apple directions, walking or driving is more useful than one would think.

Apple Pay. I probably use this nearly every other day. The fact that I don’t need the phone nearby is great.

Exercising. It ties nicely to the Health App, Activity and servers apps. Just need to allow those chosen apps to feed data to the heath app.

Remote control of music in my car through the iPhone. Pausing music or audiobooks or pod casts and so on.

Nest security alerts, including snaps from the camera when a motion or sound is noticed.

Camera control for special occasions where a selfie is needed and the camera is place further away than normal.

Place in the Dock the most frequently used apps.

Nightstand watch. Place it in Nightstand mode. Even a small tap on the table will wake it up and show the display.

    Enjoy!

    @viewfly,

Thanks very much for all the details. Looks like I have two thirds in common with you and I have notifications from SCORES as an addition.

I do have to say, I miss a few features from my Fitbit:

The battery life, the silent alarms, the built in sleep tracking, and the ability to set number of steps as goal, being the top most.

Of course in exchange for the missing items I have gained many more that are definitely useful.

Interestingly I can “scribble” a short answer quite quickly, reminding me of my Palm days.

I am enjoying it way more than I thought I would and by no means do I have all the features figured out.

    Thanks much for your help.

Decided to let the battery run down until it went into the Power Reserve mode (time only). This happened somewhere less than 5%. It took a couple of minutes after plugging it in, to boot up fully.

    This was taken at 5%

Although I still miss the 5-7 days battery life on the Fitbit, it’s not bad for playing around and setting it up.

Yeah the silent alarm while sleeping and sleep monitoring are not practical. Although you can use the iPhone and an app for the sleep tracking, and probably better. One app records your snoring.

I think as a workout you can set a goal. Of course you can display the rings or even the step count to glance at even without a workout running. Pretty sure of that.

What do you mean by "not practical"?

The silent alarm was one of the most beneficial properties of my Fitbit. My husband is a much lighter sleeper than me and gets up after me, a perfect silent alarm scenario for me.

Yes, you can set goals but you cannot set “steps” as a goal, this is a pretty common complaint from users coming from a dedicated tracker. The steps are counted and can be dug out from all the other information, they are not settable however.

Battery life is not long enough to use it during the day and night. Unless you are willing to charge the Watch in the morning again.

What if you were to charge it in the evening? Do you get 24 hours out of one charge?

I know in the series 3 you do, as I posted I got 37 hours and that too I was playing with it quite a bit and had to many notifications on.

You are really not “using” it at night, just the one alarm in the morning.

Then what's the problem? I thought that silent alarms were available by setting the alarm and putting the watch into silent mode?

Okay I downloaded SleepMate. Charged the Watch before going to bed. It was at 50 and went to 100% in the time while I got ready. Woke up 8 hours later and it went down 20% to 80% full charge.

It’s charging now while I make breakfast. I placed it in theater mode.

So I was wrong, I guess it is practical if you plan ahead or maybe just wear it if has enough charge left over.

Not saying it’s the best app. It may be. Just took one of those listed in the link previously posted.

That’s true, in my case, the problem is remembering to put the watch in the silent mode.

@viewfly, I use AutoSleep and the battery goes down by about 10% or less.

I put on a screen protector, it is called IQ Shield, I had good luck with the brand for my Fitbit.

They come in a “6 Pack”, so that’s an advantage. I did mess up the first two tries on my Fitbit but managed the watch without much problems the first time around. It was a pleasant surprise since even the Best Buy person was complaining how the curved edges make it impossible to put a screen protector on.

Please excuse the reflections - user error.

Vf, I tracked the effect of AutoSleep:

    100% at 11:15. PM
One alarm for bedtime at 11:30 PM - silenced immediately.
One wake alarm with snooze twice at 6:21 am.
However many times the screen came on due to wrist movements.
    Battery at 92%

I tried both. Yeah, the AutoSleep went down only 12% for me. But it didn’t have as much detail for heart rate monitoring as the other app. That could be a difference. It also missed an awake period when I got up in the night to walk to the bathroom. The other app caught that on a previous night.

I didn’t like the display data from AutoSleep though.

In general, I think the science behind these app is not real hardcore. I felt the same when I had my Fitbit. One sort of gets a feel for it after a few days. And I know if I wake up at 4am and stay still in bed, trying to go back to sleep...it thinks I had a good sleep. It is only based on movement, not brain activity.

I deleted both and will leave my watch on the charger. I know when I didn’t sleep. But it is interesting to look at for a few nights or week.

Even though I wasn’t too concerned about the rated battery of 18 hours, I have been pleasantly surprised by the actuals on mine. I am at 53% after 21 hours and 26 minutes of standby and 4 hrs 27 minutes of actual usage.

I am guessing it might get better yet as I am done setting it up and playing with it less.

Another use. I have some Sonos speakers. After starting them to steam musics from Pandora on my iPad, I can control the stream, I can view the music played and volume from my Watch. The Watch app just came up automatically.
