I've had it since October. It is phenomenal at any price but for $44.95 ($10 less than Comcast and 2.5x the speed), it is beyond great! Check out my speed test below - pretty typical any time of the day/night.
I remember getting those insane speed when I lived in the big city. Still I love my Embarq/Sprint DSL. So much better then cable modem I had. The speed in my pic is pretty slow for my connection. I share the connection now with my sister, which is over a wireless network. If it were just me connected directly I would be running about 2700 kbps.
Hey no fair, that's bragging !! Verizon hasn't put in FIOS in my little town yet, although one of my friends about 15 mi away in the Boston suburbs has it, and he is getting similar speeds to yours. On my Comcast cable modem just now I got the following in the Speakeasy test.: Last Result: Download Speed: 5932 kbps (741.5 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 352 kbps (44 KB/sec transfer rate) This is about the best I usually see (it's late at night) but I am consistently over 4 Mbps download. I mostly envy the upload speed you are getting on FIOS. This would probably make a big difference in the situation where I am working at home and using the VPN to edit files/run applications on my company network. This is pretty slow with my current service. FIOS is probably also a bit more consistent over busy/slow times of the day as you mention. Another interesting thing on the Speakeasy test is the effect of choosing a distant server. My results above are for the New York server (closest to me). Doing the test from the San Francisco server I got: Download Speed: 1659 kbps (207.4 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 350 kbps (43.8 KB/sec transfer rate) If I tried Chicago it would be somewhere in between.
I wish we had Verizon FIOS in our area. My speed test (using my 802.11g wireless router on my laptop) is as follows: Download: 4835 kbps Upload: 309 kbps I usually receive a better signal, but I am currently on the other side of my house. So if I was closer, I would get a slightly higher download speed, but the upload is never higher than 311 kbps (the highest that I have seen). I will have to do a speed test with Embarq (it used to be Sprint) dsl when we get them either this week or next week along with Dish and unlimited local & long distance calling on our landline. The current Comcast speed is 6 mb down/384 kbps up, whereas the Embarq DSL speed is 5 mb down/640 kbps up.
So you mean to tell me that my sister in Huntington, NY has faster service with Optimum online than I do with Comcast??!! Waah! :crying: She is using a hand-me down computer I gave her and wouldn't know a megabit from a megawatt. Some folks have all the luck.
Cool.... looks like 10-15MBps is becoming more and more commonplace. At least around here in Portland, FIOS is beating Comcast like a rented mule and this would hopefully get Comcast to either cut prices or improve their speed.
Yep...Optonline is very fast. And now with The big bad Verizon competing with even higher speeds, it whipped cablevision into shape!
Competition is good. If that pattern holds, we may see some action from Comcast in Boston/Cambridge once Verizon starts pulling fiber around here. Thanks for the info and enjoy life in the fast lane!!
I had a tech out here from Cablevision to clear up some pixelation of some of our boxes. He found several rusted out connectors on top of the pole and replaced them. The result is the following:
Dang it! Don't have FIOS here. Have to stick to my lousy cable @ $115.00 a month, for 512kps. They require you to take the medium TV cable service to get the internet modem cable service. Next step up is ~$55 more a month for 3mbps, for a total of ~160 a month. Big ripoff company.
Well, when you are big enough that you can buy out your competitors, buy out AOL, you can pretty much do anything you want.
Here are my results: Last Result: Download Speed: 13505 kbps (1688.1 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 1433 kbps (179.1 KB/sec transfer rate) That is Optimum Online with Boost.
Wirelessly posted (Pritesh's HP iPAQ h6315: Mozilla/4.08 (PDA; NF33PPC3AR/1.0) NetFront/3.3) I have FioS as well, got the 5/2 package (5MB down, 2 MB up). Pretty impressive. Only paying $29.95 ain't bad either. Pritesh
Yeah, as rwsrichard said, "keep rubbing it in". :crying: I would love to have 5 down/2 up, since I am currently getting around 4 down/.35 up on cable for more money. The faster upload speed would make a big difference for using my company VPN. Someday....
I only have 5 down/640 Kbs up. But with legal "tweaking" I read on DSL reports, I download MP3s at an average of 1 Mb/sec. The highest speed that I have downloaded at is 1.5 Mb/sec. That sure beats the download speeds with Comcast, even though it is 6 Mb down (and yes I did have the "tweak" on my laptop with Comcast).
Sorry guys, had no intention of rubbing it in, just stating the facts. I'm confident you'll all get it soon, just be patient. While you guys are just getting the internet side, I'm sure I'll be getting FioS TV, haha. Pritesh
So I had to resurrect this thread. I'm at the aforementioned sister's house on Long Island and measured her Cablevision/Optimum Online speed with Speakeasy. Did it lots of times, this was typical: Download Speed: 11399 kbps (1424.9 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 1805 kbps (225.6 KB/sec transfer rate) She's getting about 3x the download and 5x the upload speed I get with Comcast in MA.
Talked to a rep at the VZW store, the manager. He did not know what I was talking about when I asked about FIOS.
Why would he? He sells wireless services for Verizon Wireless. FiOS is offered by Verizon which is a total different entity.
Have they deployed it in your area? A majority of the Verizon territories aren't covered by it yet. Only selected areas have been brought online. Granted, SBC/ATT's deployment is even worse.
Not deployed that I am aware of. I know people who have SBC. It is very, very horrible. But it is the only service they can get. Told them they would be better off getting a satelite dish and then using their internet service.
