Last night our Time Warner Internet went out for 3-4 hours. For me this is the last straw with them and their inconsistent service and poor speeds. We can't get FIOS or U-Verse, so Clear seemed to be a good choice as the out of pocket expense to sign up was smallest of the three (Clear, AT&T & Verizon DSL). So this morning I stopped in to a local Radio Shack sign up with Clear. I picked up a Motorola Series M modem, thought it would be better then a USB modem for testing the service. As soon as I got home I set it up. It was so easy, just plug in the power cord and then connect the Ethernet cable. In just a couple minutes I was up and running. And so far it is working very well. Surfing seems slightly faster then TW, and this is while I'm streaming talk radio. Even though doing speed test to compare the two services show TW (over WiFi) is four times faster. Getting into the setup menu shows me as having good signal -79dBm (3 out of 5 bars on modem). This is with having the modem placed deep in my room not by the window. Here are the Speedtest.net results between TW & Clear. TW: Clear: I have 15 days to decide to keep it, but I will be returning it regardless. Why, you ask? Because if it works I will be switching back to Sprint as it will be cheaper to have this service through Sprint by adding a line on to the family plan that is still in my name.
It has been a week since signing up, and I am still very impressed over all with the service. I have only experienced one small outage (10min). And it did seem like Clear throttled my speed during and a couple of days after downloading a torrent. Even with those two small issues I would recommend Clear to any one who can get it. I would stick to cable or dsl for any one who download torrents or is a very heavy internet user. Now Sunday I get to test it on my mom's Epic, can't wait!
I think the max right now for Clear is 6MB right now. And for regular web browsing it is certainly acceptable. I notice no difference between the two services while browsing and streaming. With uploading I notice the biggest difference uploading pics to eBay or Photobucket takes a few seconds longer, and torrent seeding was painful though.
Clear is so expensive. I do not understand why anyone would sign up for it. I have had At&t dsl for years. It is stable and consistent. I have never had any issues and the speeds are pretty good. I stopped at the Clear kiosk at the mall a few weeks ago and he could not tell me why Clear is a better deal. The only thing he had to say is that I could take it with me. Yipee...I can take it with me in my city only. Who cares.
I guess it depends on the individual... My mother in law moved into an Atlanta apartment that wasn't wired properly for AT&T or Comcast. For them, Clear was an OK solution. They had no problems surfing the web, even with my brother vegging out on those music download sites. I never considered Clear since I don't live in their service area... but the sales folks at the kiosks are quite pushy... no thanks
Well what a major let down! My mom's Epic would not connect to 4G. No luck after a reboot, checking & updating settings.
May be so!?!?!? But I just found out that 4G is for data only. lol, I thought it was for Voice & Data. :lmao: Well no switching back to Sprint for me.
I saw this deal today for a Clear iSpot for $20. I snatched it up and will try it out while home and in Florida for the next month. Too cheap to pass up! Deal: Clear iSpot – $20 Shipped, Today Only | PhoneNews.com
Yea, I couldn't pass up on that deal, especially before I go on vacation. I should get clear coverage at home just fine. I will also be taking it to JFK, PBI, and grandmas house in Florida, which just happens to be near one of the VERY spread apart clear towers. Once I hack the ispot, it should be fun.
Not a bad experience in my parents house so far. Once I got the thing activated and hacked, I was able to connect on my laptop and phone no problem. The speeds on the ispot are capped at 6mpbs, and that is usually where or near where I top out at. Coverage is at about -80 dbm (as long as I do not touch the ispot), which is not bad at all! More updates as I use it more.
