Ok, somebody please step in and tell me I'm crazy. First of all let me say that I will qualify for an upgrade on the 26th of this month. I want to jump to 3G service as I sometimes use my phone as a backup for when my internet is down. (And I want to use the coolest technology.) What I want is a V3x, but they don't have a US version that has 850 on it. So here it is, I'm considering an LG CU500. Its a 3G Razr wannabe. I want a Motorola, but they aren't offering anything but rehashed 2G V3's. The CU500 is scheduled to be released next month. I guess what I may do is use the LG until Motorola releases a 3G model, then dump the LG on Ebay and use the $ to buy my Moto. Is this a sane plan? Am I on crack? As much as I bust on LG for their inconsistent quality and I'm considering one of their phones??? Thanks in advance to everyone for their input. -Jay
You're crazy....lol That's what started or at least what inspired Motohooligan to start my "what phone should i get thread"... I also want the Razr v3x and even considering on getting it since i've been told by different sources that here in California 1900 mHz is still being used by a large area in So Cal by Cingular....hm? I think your plan makes sense, i would go for it and i might also consider it. I'm up for an upgrade on the 26th as well Jay.
The HSDPA service will be very quick (some have said testing has been faster than EV-DO!) and if you are in an area (guessing Sterling, VA is close to a larger city) then it would be great! While I am not a big LG fan, having the 3G is what I can't wait for in a next phone.
Wirelessly posted (Walkguru's: Nokia6682/2.0 (3.01.1) SymbianOS/8.0 Series60/2.6 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0) The lg is not the best phone out there. But it sounds like a plan.
That's true... Jay, would ye a thread and poll also? I agree. If you know what you want, and the LG has it, get it. I am not much for their designs and they do have very inconsistent build quality but I'm happy with my AX4270 so get the CU500, if you don't like it during the trial period, return it and wait for the V3x or the V3i or the Canary or whatever Moto throws at us next, in Time.
I would wait untill I hear some great reviews on any GSM LG phone. I just don't trust the RF on their phones, but I do like everything else about their phones.
I would say Go For It. LG has not been very successful in their GSM lineup but they do make excellent CDMA phones. Everything I have read about the CU500 has been good, I personally don't like the idea of having to take out the battery to get at the micro SD card specially since on both my 6682 and my QTEK it was easily accessible. As mentioned before you can always return it within the trial period if it turns out to be disappointing. It reminds me of the Samsung MM A900 and that's a good looking phone. I will look forward to a review after you get it. Good luck..
Sterling is in Loudoun county, the "Silicon Valley" of the east coast. (We're close to Washington DC.) I'm also about 3 miles from Dulles Airport, so 3G service is available here. -Jay
If a poll is to your liking then by all means go for it. I'm just pissed right now that Motorola isn't offering what I want (V3x + 850). I would like to get something soon, as I blew out the handset speaker on the V551 about 2 weeks ago with my deaf ears. Now I have to use speakerphone or bluetooth to use it. My best bet seems to be to get a 3G phone either from Samsung or LG, and then dump it on Ebay when Motorola gets off their Aes and gets something to market. I feel like I'm contemplating breaking up a long term relationship. -Jay
How much modding can you do with an LG? How satisfying will it be to have a phone you can't modify? Why not get another 3G Motorola that does have 850? (Obviously, you would have to order that from another source than Cingular.) If you feel like you're breaking up and you don't want to, don't do it. But if you need a new phone now, get it now, then sell it later when the Moto of your dreams comes out.
I was just looking on phonescoop and I found this... http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=509 Its a discontinued AT&T model. Its not a flip, but it is a Moto w/ 850. I looked and there are none on Ebay. Why can't they bring that back until they can get their other phones ready? Better yet, why are they spending so much time rehashing their 2G V3's? Why is it I feel that Motorola is turning into a one trick pony? -Jay
I'm also considering jumping onto the 3G handset bandwagon. I'm going to have a look around for a Motorola or a Nokia 3G capable handset which isn't too expensive. The N80 would rock my world so I could try out UMTS in the US at some point. The newest handsets here are just way too much without a contract and my E-Plus BASE (unlimited calls for 25 Euros/month - German landlines and all E-Plus MVNOs/E-Plus users) contract doesn't offer subsidized phones since the monthly contract is considered to be a flat rate. I prefer to buy mine unlocked and without a SIM anyway.
It seems there are a few cheap Motorolas on Ebay, but they appear to be UK models, which should be fine for you in Germany. Particularly the Motorola V980 and the V1050. It appears that either can be had for under $130, and I see some V980's w/ a BIN price of $89. Check out these 2 auctions: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-MOTOROLA-V1...725428995QQcategoryZ64355QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-MOTOROLA-V9...722479483QQcategoryZ64355QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem None of these have the US 850 band, otherwise I think I'd look into them. -Jay
Thanks, I've seen the V980 on sale here several times at Saturn for 79 Euros. They were locked to Vodafone but they can easily be unlocked without sending them in. I'll keep an eye out for one in a store since I don't use eBay.
Has anyone here tried the Motorola A1000? It looks pretty interesting, and I may be able to overlook the 1900 only limitation for all the other cool features. http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-MOTOROLA-A1...725246313QQcategoryZ64355QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem -Jay
Be careful! Remember that if you have a 1900 mhz only phone, if you ever travel to an area that uses 850, you won't be able to take advantage of the extra coverage. Just something to keep in mind.
I know, that's why I'm looking for a quadband 3G phone, but it appears Motorola doesn't make one -Jay
Probably not much, my daughter has an LG and really cannot do to much with it. Jay, I guess since you are getting it as an upgrade, E-bay is out of the question, V3X are a plenty there.
I think I may take a free phone and dump it on eBay to offset the purchase of something I really want. If I took a V557 and then put it on ebay that's like $100 off my new phone. Like I said though, I really want a 3G Motorola, but I only see european models that don't have 850. -Jay
Jay, why are you so dead-set on a 3G phone? Why not wait until 3G is actually rolled out on a large scale here in the US? At that point I'm sure you'll be able to find a 3G Motorola with 850 MHz... though, then you'll probably want a 4G Motorola with 850. Oh, brother! :loony:
I haven't come across any Motorolas with GSM 850 and UMTS 2100 on Motorola.de either. I did some more investigating today and found that the Phone House has a deal on a Motorola e770v for 89 Euros (locked to Vodafone, shouldn't be a problem to unlock myself) so I will get that handset over the V980 (lacks BT, has no e-mail client etc) tomorrow before work. At least then I'll have a UMTS 2100 capable handset for the next couple years once it becomes more mainstream. http://direct.motorola.com/eng/web_producthome.asp?Country=GBR&language=ENG&productid=30335 http://www.phonehouse.de/shop/00006...1bbeda7ec4d73d8086fzgz0zg&menu=1194_1197_1537 I'll post a review once I've tried it out .
You of all people should understand this... I want one because I can have one. Its like going to the city and seeing all the hummers with big tires and brush guards on the front. Those trucks will never see any sort of off-road condition, but you could do it if you wanted to. So basically its bragging rights and the desire to have a cool new toy. I've already signed up for unlimited data in anticipation of jumping to 3G. I figure at this point if I get another 2G phone now I will be the last to get a 3G by the time I qualify for an upgrade again. I want it, and I want it now. -Jay
