OK found that I am SID 4169 for the Phoenix area for TDMA/AMPS. I am familiar with the screens in Field Test, I am looking through them right now...

However, it still seems I am on GSM. The way you mention to check this (Menu-Messages-Service Command Editor) is still valid (not greyed out). I did go into the SID list through the *4248... and changed it to 4169. It does in fact show 4169 even after reboot...

Does screen 21-01 say Suspended (GSM) or Camping(TDMA) or Idle(AMPS)?

There isn't any way to get the ADM for the 6340i is there? Thought I might be able to chage the PPI if I got that...

No luck on ever finding the ADM: code. Does screen 21-02 have a number in the bottom right of the group of numbers or just XXX's? Is your account a GSM account that you are trying to use a 6340i on or is it a GAIT account. Mine is a TDMA-GAIT account, so I might have different programming than you. Your phone may search for GSM first, while mine searches for TDMA first.

You know, this is getting old. I get a different answer from everyone I call. The latest response is that I need a GAIT SIM card! I know some of you have been able to use your 64K sim cards with this phone! AHHHHH. This is just too much!

    my 21-02 page is this:
    ACCH
    XXXXX
    0

It may be that the TDMA-GAIT account is needed to make this work. I am on the phone again waiting for Tech support. Hopefully I will get someone different this time!

Also, yes I have a GSM account. I do not have a GAIT account.

You may be SOL in forcing it to TDMA since you have a GSM account. I believe the phone will always search for GSM first. FYI, I just got a 64K SIM and it works fine with my GAIT.

Different rep this time. He is much more knowlegable. However the feature code is no longer availible to add on to accounts. He and his supervisor do not have access to add it to the plan. It just isn't there anymore! It has to do with the area you are based out of. If I was in some portions of California, or other areas, apparently it is still capable. Just not in the Arizona market as they say they have overlaid the entire TDMA network with GSM now. I don't know if I like that answer, but it is better than the ones I have gotten thus far...

That and the fact that they can't add the feature to my account here in AZ. He did mention (unofficially) that if I wanted to change my billing address to a location where they offer the GAIT option, I would then be able to add it. It is just too much of a hassle. Thanks for all your help by the way! svanwormer, you have been great!

Ok I am new to the forum and in the same fix as many. I bought a "nearly new" 6340i from e-bay and it arrived without the Gait Sim card. I live in Florida and for a complex reason need the TDMA and GSM service. Cingular Customer service says I need a Gait Sim Card; but there are none to be had.

Anyone with any idea how to obtain one.

All Cingular SIMs support GAIT, except for the old 16K SIMs in the original GSM markets (NC, SC, NV, CA, WA). So, since you are in FL, your SIM card should support GAIT if it is a 32K or 64K SIM which most likely it is. All you need is one of the new GSM Nation Plans and ask them to add the GSM-TDMA interoperability feature to your account (it doesn't cost anything extra) and you also need a Nokia 6340i which you said you already have.

Just take a look at your SIM card. It should say 64K or 32K GT or something like that.

Lucky ducks, I couldn't add the interoperability feature to my account here in AZ because they never offered GAIT here...

    GSM-TDMA interop feature in Georgia

Anybody added the GSM-TDMA interoperability feature in the Atlanta, Georgia market lately? A rep I just spoke with said that she no longer can activate that feature in the Georgia market. She did not know when that feature was discontinued for new activations. I asked for a supervisor and was told that one was not available but one could call me back in 48hrs. I said no thanks.

Almost identical to the response that I got from them when I tried to activate the feature on my account in March here in Arizona.

There isn't anything that you really want to change there. Mostly for diagnostics. Unless you want to force the phone into TDMA only. Search on these forums for postings on that.

Change a few things and you can screw up the phone.

See my postings in this old thread for test mode codes, ie what they mean: http://forums.wirelessadvisor.com/showthread.php?t=6541

Re: GSM-TDMA interop feature in Georgia

I got basically the same answer in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton PA Market "GAIT is no longer supported". However my phone will switch to TDMA but I can't call on it. The phone display says "Cingular Extended" when it's in TDMA mode, so I have to switch it off and power back up, it will search and lock onto GSM first if it can find it. I'll have to see if there is a way to disable TDMA totally on my 6340iif I can't beg Cingular into providing GAIT mode.

Make a call?? Seriously, it probably was looking for TDMA/AMPS if it took a long time.

Go to Menu->Messages->Scroll up. Find Service Command Editor. If dim, you are in TDMA/AMPS, if bold face, you are in GSM. You may need to use area codes for all calls.

    During a call, Mute = TDMA/AMPS; Hold= GSM

No way to do that. You can lock out GSM, but you can't lock out TDMA
