I am going to be in Mexico (near Cabo San Lucas, Baja California). Can I send and recieve texts (or even get service) there? I have unlimitted texting but I don't know if you have to pay an international fee or even if you can.
The only CDMA carrier in Mexico is Iusacell. From what I read on Wikipedia, Verizon/Vodafone have a stake in the company. The roaming amount per minute is 0.99 cents. Edit: From http://b2b.vzw.com/international/Text_Messaging/index.html
Onces you leave the US any features or packages you have don't mean anything. You'll pay roaming rates for voice calls and text pricing will likely be much more expensive to send. You'll likely receive for the same rate you do in the US.
I was in Playa Del Carmen (60 miles south of Cancun) last week with my BBerry Storm. I was able to send and receive calls and email. The text message and roaming price quoted by the other poster was also given to me by Verizon CS. By switching to the global roaming plan for one week (approx. $15) I was able to use unlimited data on my BBerry. You must enable international calling (no charge) on your phone before you go. Global roaming only if you plan to use data. A simple call to 611 will do it
Some of this info is redundant. As long as you are near a major resort or city in BCS, MX, you should have service with a CDMA Verizon Phone. Dial *611 or call (800) 922-0204 or contact a Verizon Wireless representative to enable International Roaming. While traveling outside the U.S., the text messaging rates are: $0.50/address sent $0.05/message received These text messages are not applied against your monthly text messaging bundled allowances. CDMA Standard Roaming Per Minute Rate: 0.99 CDMA Value Plan Roaming Per Minute Rate: 0.99 To Dial: Locally within Mexico: 7 or 8-digit number Long distance within Mexico: (Example: Mexico City to Cancun) 01 + city code + 7-digit number Calling to U.S. or Canada: 001 + area code + 7-digit number Verizon Wireless customer calling a local wireless subscriber in Mexico: 044 + city code + 7-digit number* *Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey phone numbers will consist of a 2-digit area code plus an 8-digit local number.
Be careful down there Essd! Near the resorts is usually safe but the whole country has gotten alot more dangerous.
