Was just curious if any of you were Howard Stern listeners and had heard the cell phone talks for the past month or so... To recap, if you're not a listener. Howard Stern (Shock Jock, not the one involved with Anna Nicole) recently decided to move from his Treo(Not sure which model) to a new phone, and was doing heavy research on phones, between the new Palm (Pre I believe), iPhone, or some form of Blackberry. After weeks of discussion, and deliberation, he decided on the Bold. Switched from Sprint to AT&T to get the phone. Raved, and raved about the Bold, how it was the greatest phone ever, even got his News Woman Robin to switch also... Then earlier last week he comes in, complaining about the AT&T service, it's the worst service ever, wishes he didn't have to have AT&T to have the Bold, etc. etc. TONS Of callers start calling in stating they have the Bold on other networks... (Which is BS, and is later researched and stated in the show, it's believed these undereducated listeners believe EVER BB is a Bold). So he comes in the next day, finds out his service with AT&T had been cut, due to a number porting issue, so there was no problem with the AT&T service, it was just turned off... I guess to make a long story short, those of you who listen, are you ever amazed at just how LITTLE these people seem to know about the world of wireless? I've been quite amused by it all myself... ~*Ash*~
there are documented cases of users unlocking the phones and using them on T-mobile's network, they just wont be able to use 3G and it will be stuck on EDGE
No these users were calling in SWEARING they had that phone on Sprint, which is impossible... ~*Ash*~
Oh, if only I had known. I could have called in and recommended Wireless Advisor for the mobile phone uninformed. Many people just don't think that some carriers operate on different network technologies. They think "It's a cell phone and it should work with ALL carriers", as if it's a given cell carriers think in such basic ways. Granted mobile technology can be complex, but in this society, people don't seem to care about the semantics of the technology, just that it works. In other words cell service first, technicalities later...And we all know what happens when the technicalities are more than the uninformed bargained for... That's why Wireless Advisor is here!
I am a hardcore Howard Stern listener and enjoyed the mobile phone talk on the show. In the end of the Bold rant he stated ATT could improve their infrastructure in the New York City area. Artie Lange however has the Blackberry curve with Verizon and mentioned he never has any issues with his phone and was amazed by that.
I haven't listened to Howard since he went to satellite radio, but I used to listen all the time. I did know that Palm has been letting some very visible celebrities try out the Pre (is that called a pre-release Pre? ). If you google "celebrity Palm Pre", you find things like the following, so it's not surprising that Howard had one. Angelina Jolie - Seen on the set of 'Salt' with upcoming Palm Pre Years ago Howard had a computer running OS/2 (yes, I meant years ago) and what apparently was a personal tech support guy from IBM, helping him keep it in tiptop shape. Oh how Howard raved about OS/2, and how much better it was than Windows, etc.. IBM obviously felt that this was good advertising. But it just goes to show that celebrities who get special treatment don't always make the choices that you would make. SW
I did hear hear them talking about this over a couple of days. I was surprised (and happy) that he did some research and didn't just default to an iPhone.
Yeah, he was intrigued by the iPhone, but wasn't sure how it would work with Lotus, and didn't know how he'd take the touch keyboard. I had a feeling with all the guys on here I'd find some Stern fans. I do wonder though how many super fans will get the Bold now just because Howard has endorsed it? Ash
Big mistake on Palm's part. The best way to get a new user for a gadget like this is obviously to get it into their hands. And then, if it's Howard Stern, you have a tech support dude/dudettte call him up every day and see how he's doing with it and if you can help in any way (ideally, you choose an employee who's very competent, but weird in some way, so Howard can make fun of them and not the phone). If Palm didn't do this, no wonder they lost out. Yes, now I remember that Howard loves Lotus Notes. A holdover from his IBM/OS/2 days. He's not the most techno-savvy guy, but when he likes a bit of technology, he really likes it. SW
Palm was really pushing the pre hard down his throat....but he chose the bold which really is an updated curve....which will be updated with the cdma tour due this july on verizon.
Palm reps showed up with the pre according to precentral.com, everythingpre.com, etc. he just liked the form factor of the bold because it was more like the treo, front qwerty, no slider.
According to Howard they had a demo to try during the demonstration, but not to physically keep and try...
