I got my phone this saturday and spent sunday looking all over the net for instructions on how to do this, apparently no one else has figured it out so I figured I'd help out who I could. To upload any sound file to your Samsung A900 and use it as a ringtone without paying for the “Sprint Store” or “Power Vision” simply follow these simple step-by-step instructions. Step 1 – Select the sound file you wish to use. Remember you won’t be hearing the whole song, so choose something with a good chorus or intro you enjoy. -THEN- Step 2a – If you have access to a program which allows you to trim mp3 files at the points you’d like, do so. You now have your ringtone! -OR- Step 2b – If you don’t have access to such a program, download a freeware product which will let you convert mp3 to wav. Convert your file, and then open it in your Windows Sound Recorder program which can be found in Accessories>Entertainment. Use the edit options to trim your long wav song into a short wav ringtone. Save it, and convert your new wav file back into mp3 format. You now have your ringtone! -THEN- Step 3 – Download a program which will let you convert mp3 to 3g2. I had a rather hard time finding one, so to help you out I’ll suggest looking here -Then- Step 4 –Install and open your conversion program. Select your ringtone wav or mp3 and if able to, disable video and alter the bit rate to suit your needs. Choose .3g2 as the file format you wish to output, and then convert your file. -THEN- Step 5 – Whip out your a900 and shoot a short camcorder movie of whatever. You only need to do this once. -THEN- Step 6– Connect your a900 to your pc using the USB cable it came with, then on your handset select tools>mass storage>connect to pc. This will let you upload files onto your phone. -THEN- Step 7 – On your PC look in “My Computer” for a drive which will appear as something like “Removable Disk”. Explore into it and click through DCIM> 100SSMED (or whatever is on your phone). Here you should see whatever pictures you’ve taken with your phone as well as any video. Copy the filename of the movie you shot in step 5. -THEN- Step 8 – Copy your ringtone in 3g2 format into the folder containing your sample camcorder movie. Delete your sample camcorder movie and rename your new ringtone file by single clicking and then pasting the sample movie’s name into it. For example, my new ringtone after I’ve done steps 1-8 is now called SSPX0033.3g2 -THEN- Step 9 – To finally set your uploaded song as a ringtone, disconnect your a900 from your pc, then enter Settings>Sounds>Ringer type>Voice calls>With caller id> then scroll down to My Videos. You will see a file with a box and an X in it. Highlight it, select Options and select Play. If you’ve done your job you will be able to hear your new ringtone. If so, click back and then click assign. This ringtone will now play whenever someone calls and your phone is able to id them. To use it as an individual ringtone, go through your contacts list. Final note - For any subsequent ringtones youll be making, just be sure to change the number in your final 3g2 file, such as SSPX0034.3g2 instead of SSPX0033.3g2 Woohoo! If you’ve got questions, post ‘em. If you’re grateful, praise me. If you’re tired of reading, just know I’m tired of typing. I’m new to the forum, hope this helps everyone out and starts me off on a good note.

Hey guys. This thread has been real helpful, but I seem to be stuck in the "Converting Trimmed Mp3 file to 3g2" (or whatever it was) I downloaded the converter (mp3 to 3g2) And when I tried to choose my Audio mp3 file I couldn't find it, instead of Audio files there was only Video files I could choose (Same folder as music) Any help would be appreciated. _kurt

I followed all of your steps and successfully uploaded and renamed our clipped ringtone but it will not play. It is on the phone and I assigned it but nothing plays. Also I'm a little confused on the step "whip out a900" and down!! How do I take the converted clip and move it to the phone, I think the reason I hear nothing is because I'm taking the original clip from my desktop not from the conversion software because it would not let me and following the rest of the steps?!?!? Please help I'm almost there!!! Thanks, Lisa
You a genius man.. Thanks a lot, you had to convert it as a movie file and than rename the file and wolla! Damn Sprint! you saved my $2 per ringtone..
Hey All, so I'm just about there. But each time I try to play my new file I get nothing. I do have the box w/ the X in it. And when I expand/explore the X file, there is nothing there. Someone mentioned that they had to play with the output of the converter. Does that mean I should make the output of the converter the phone? Also does the A900 need to have a certain bit rate in order to play the new file. Sorry to be such a knucklehead. Thanks in adavance for the advice. DD
thanks for the help on uploading the ringtones, it worked great for me.... but now i want to put a different ringtone on my phone and the trial period of the converter is over and i can't convert the file.... i tried keygens(didn't work) do you know any other mp3 to 3g2 converters that i could use or even a password for the ApecSoft converter
Ringtones for the Samsung A900. The REAL way Hello everyone. According to everyone’s complaints, it was obvious that Sprint was trying to rip us off (for those who own a Samsung A900) by making the Mp3’s that we send to our phone just that, Mp3’s and not ringers. Although I have found that you can convert your favorite songs into 3g2 files, the sound quality is poor and it also takes up memory from your videos and pictures. I did a lil research, and this is the REAL way to make ringtones! I have tested this and it does work. The process does take a while, but once you are aware of the folders and process, it becomes easier everytime…and hey…its FREE!! No one wants to pay for ringtones right?? Here are the steps to follow!! Try this and email me if you have any problems. 1. You are going to first need to install the driver on your computer. You can find this driver on http://www.samsung.com, it is called the SPH-A900.zip. After you begin installing the driver, there will be popups asking you do you want to continue installing the driver, select the button CONTINUE ANYWAY. After you have installed the driver, restart your computer. 2. Once you have restarted your computer, you then need to find a copy of two zip files: QPST2_7.zip and qpst-2.7b215.zip. It is quite difficult to find the qpst-2.7b215, so I used Shareaza to find it. You might be able to find this in Morpheus or any of the file-sharing programs you may use. Otherwise, you might go through a lot of difficulty finding it. 3. You then unzip the two files and install them. After both installations are complete, restart your computer. 4. Now that you have the two programs installed, you need to collect your MSL #. The MSL # is a 6-digit identification number that identifies your phone as an individual. Everyone’s MSL #’s are different!! You can retrieve this by calling up Sprint and asking for it. Most operators will give it to you with no problems. WRITE THE MSL # IN A SAFE PLACE AS TO WHERE YOU CAN REFER TO IT AGAIN!! This is just in case you forget it. 5. Now, you need to connect your phone to the USB cable and connect it to your computer. You computer should automatically detect the driver and little pop ups will show up letting you know it recognizes the connection. 6. Locate your QPST and open the program name of QPST Configuration. 7. Click the tab PORTS and click the button “Add new ports.” 8. Look at the ports. Sometimes the computer will detect your phone in COM 1- 4. The best thing to do is add both of them because sometimes the computer detects your phone on different ports. 9. Your phone should be detected. Then, you click on the tab Start Clients and click the EFS Explorer. 10. Your phone should then be shown and the pop-up asking for your MSL # should be showing (even though displayed as SPC). 11. After entering your MSL # (if done correctly), your computer will begin configuring your phone’s memory. This is normal. Give it a moment. Now you will be looking at you phone’s data. Minimize the program. 12. What I find to be easy is gathering a copy of Audacity (google it) to crop MP3’s to which you want to be your ringtone. If you want to use Audacity, you will need the file extension called lame_enc.dll (google it) this encodes MP3’s. You may not use Audacity, but whichever program you use to crop music, make sure you crop enough to where you will be satisfied with the song as a ringtone. 13. Before you upload your ringtone, you want to make sure that the phone understands it as a ringtone and not something that was put on your phone as an error. You want to look at your phone’s memory on the QPST. Look under the tab brew/obione/jas/index. Look for the next available .txt file. This will be the number that you will use as your upload number . 14. Now you want to upload your ringtone to get the .gc, .gcd, and .txt files. The best site to use is A900Upload.com - Get files on your Samsung SPH-A900 with a data cable - Free!. You use the uploading tool by browsing for your cropped ringtone, and then naming it (to make is easier) the next available .txt number. 15. The website will then prompt you to save the .zip file. Save it in a place easy to remember. Then, you are going to unzip it. FOLLOW THESE STEPS CAREFULLY! THESE ARE CRUCIAL!!! 16. The first thing you want to do is edit the data on the .txt file. Click on it. It will open the data of which your ringtone is. This is the model to use edit it accordingly. If your .txt file doesn’t look like this, it might not work. CONF: (this is where your next available .txt number should be) COSH: (this is where the same number should be as above) TYPE: audio/mp4 SIZE: 123731 ( this is automatically configured. Don’t mess with the number) FEXT: ENCO: TPID: 1 OWNR: 1 VRNG: 0 PATH: shared/jas/content/8.gc (the “8” should be the same number CONF & COSH number used) FDNM: Ringers SUBD: DOMA: 0 SGLE: 0 (make sure this space is blank.) ROLE: 0 (make sure this space is blank as well) MMSK: 0 CATE: 4 STAT: 0 COID: PCS586762 DURL: http://manage.sprintpcs.com/Manage/PA_1_2_38/redirect?download=PCS586762 NAME: (Name your ringtone here) VEND: Vision Ringers TIME: 1182883966 ICON: ISIZ: 0 FLCK: 1 17. Now save your changes. Make sure that your .gc file and your .gcd files match. This means that it is the same number in the .txt file (as CONF, COSH, and the number under PATH). 18. Now this is your final step. You are going to move your ringtone to your phone’s memory to make your phone think the ringtone was downloaded. First you want to put the .txt file in the correct folder. Select the brew/mod/obione/jas/index. Drag your .txt file to this folder and it should appear there. Then, you want to righ click the .txt file you added. Select Properties. Select the tab Attributes. Make sure that under the Clean-up option, the bullet selected is DISCARD. 19. Now, open the brew/shared/jas/content file. Drag your .gc. AND .gcd files into this folder. Right click .gc files, and select properties (the same as the .txt file process), click click the Attributes tab and make sure that the Clean Up option is DISCARD. Do this process again for you .gcd file and Presto! There you go. Exit the program and it should ask you do you want to restart your phone. Click the yes button and there you go! You should have your ringtone!! Congrats!! If you have any questions or problems, feel free to email me at territrep06@yahoo.com
Hi i was wondering if you could help me out. Awesome job on the .3g2 for some reason it worked with .wav files but not .mp3 but got it just for other people. I was wondering if there was a way to use the video files to text messages. I have found a wav and mp3 sound clip from the movie Eurotrip "mail _______*&*er" and would be an awesome clip for whenever i receive a text. Good job and thanks you for any help.
Haha!! Sounds funny!! Haha!! All you have to do is convert that .wav file into an mp3 file. Then you follow the steps given to convert it into a ringtone. Once you have it on your phone, you just go to the content page on your phone, look under ringtones, and set it as the sound notification for when you get text messages. Let me know if you have any more problems
