What's the best native or app to trak monthly data usage to keep under the 2Gb limit on Android (HTC incredible 2?

Any quick suggestions? I couldn't find anything in the manual. Came across suggestions for these apps:

    3GWatchDog or
    Netcounter

    any opinions?

3G WatchDog gets my vote, it has a widget as well. I have the Pro version which allows one to set billing rules so one can match how the Provider rounds up.

It has been very helpful for use on Roaming Data

I do have to warn you that it never exactly matches and the best is to verify with *DATA# , every so often if it is close to the limit.

From my experience the App is typically 5-10% higher which I like.

What's wrong with the built-in one? It's been pretty accurate for me. It also has an option to set the limiter.

There is no built in one prior to ICS.

*DATA# works from my device, although typically I choose the "AT&T View Data Usage" from the contact list.

I have no idea what works from a Verizon device.

Yeah, I think it is #DATA for Verizon. I assume from the phone, not sent as a text?

    This is a Verizon device.

Dialing #data on an Android device will open the My Verizon widget... Or have text messages sent if data is unavailable.

The My Verizon widget is usually preinstalled on the phones. If it's not on the phone already, it's available in the Market.

Thank you all, I will inform my non tech friend and see how it goes. They discovered streaming music, and I concerned....

Actually, I'm feeling a bit non tech on this IN2. Everything is about the same as my iPhone, just in different places.

i am trying out 3G Watch Dog for a couple of days now. it's pretty good. it even allows you to put a small widget on the home screen that shows you the current monthly usage. it lets the user set the quota, billing period, and have it automatically reset at the start of the billing period.

i have experienced 2 times now where the AT&T account site was showing about 10mb more than what the 3G Watch Dog was showing. the AT&T account data indicator is delayed, but there shouldn't be any case where AT&T shows more data than the data monitor on the phone.

I learned that Verizon automatically sends data usage alerts to limited data plan users. This started this summer.

    here

It's clear that after killing off unlimited smartphone data plans, Verizon realized it had a walloping PR mess to clean up. Alas, the carrier isn't budging on its decision to impose usage-based plans, which go into effect today, but it is making nice the best way it knows how: by checking in frequently to let you know just how many megabytes you've burned through. Starting this week, smartphone owners with new (read: not unlimited) data plans will begin receiving free text message alerts informing them when they've consumed 50, 75, 90, 100, and 110 percent of their monthly allowance. People with My Verizon accounts can request email alerts instead, the same way they would with mobile broadband cards and netbooks, though either way you can only disable the alerts for the 50 and 75 percent makers -- those 90, 100, and 110 percent milestone markers appear to be mandatory. In addition, you can, as always, keep tabs on your usage by entering "#DATA", downloading the Data Usage widget for Android and BlackBerry, using the online data calculator, or availing yourself of the My Verizon portal. Hit the source links to find those last two, and best of luck with that gigabyte diet.

According to Verizon, Androids from 1.6 on have a data widget. So the Incredible 2, at 2.2 is good to go.

    Thanks viewfly.

That Data Widget is a Verizon app and is only for Verizon devices, which ofcourse is fine in this case.

If this is like the "My AT&T", then there will be some lag in dispalying the actual data, just something to be careful about.

In my expericience a third party app like 3G watchdog etc will give the real time data usage, whereas anything from the provider usually has considerbale lag.

Just curious. Is there anything on Android, like my iPhone, that is a simple data counter?

In the iOS, under General, Usage, Cellular Newtork Data, it breaks it down to Sent/Receive. That I found to be accurate when overseas roaming. Of course it is up to you to reset the start time.

Its a simple counter of how much data the phone is seeing in and out. Should be accurate.

I hope that the Data Widget app operates the same.

viewfly, as I mentioned earlier there is not a built in native app for data, prior to ICS.

Have you ever compared your phone's data usage to what AT&T shows? The reason I ask is that AT&T and probaly other providers round up data at each disconnection and may also apply other billing rules. This results in a discrepancy as is reported by many users. The following is one such thread:

iPhone Data Usage Counter DIFFERENT from AT&T (*32... - AT&T Community Support

Yes I did compare the native iPhone data counter to ATT's results, although not with great nit picky precision. It counted me just up to but under 25Mb while I was overseas roaming, and I was happy with that. I would imagine that ATT is delayed and maybe padded a bit. I would think the native phone counter knows how much data went back and forth to the phone. If it is 5-10% under from ATT, that is fine. I've usually half under my monthly 2Gb limit anyhows.

Just surprised that Android doesn't have a native counter until ICS. Seems pretty basic thing to have.

Anyhow, this is Verizon. Sent a #DATA as a phone call, and didn't get a text back. :headscrat

On Verizon, dialing #DATA will launch the My Verizon data use widget on an Android phone. If a data signal is not available, it will be processed as a phone call and text messages will be sent after a prompt.

I just wanted to point out that the iPhones built in data counter is not that accurate either as was mentioned above. My 4S is showing that I used a total of 635MB in a month, when AT&T is showing my usage as 900MB of data. Just saying...

Thanks! It didn't launch My Verizon, but I opened My Verizon Mobile manually and saw the information there. Also got 3 txt messages with the information.

    This works.

I'll check it out. 40% seems wildly over the top. I'd call ATT and speak to them about this.

Since ATT officially suggests using the native data tracker for international roaming, it better be closer than your experience. See below. I would call and say, 'what gives?':headscrat

Like I said, it did work well for me while overseas. VF

Track Your Usage Upon Arrival Abroad. Some devices (like iPhone®) have native usage trackers, and
most communication manager software for laptops will have usage tracking capabilities. If your
device does not offer an embedded usage tracker, you can use the myAT&T app or download a 3rd
party data tracking app from the AT&T AppCenter.

 Tip for iPhone Users: When you arrive overseas, tap on: Settings>General>Usage>Reset Statistics. Then
periodically check your usage against your international data package while abroad (tap on: Settings>General>
Usage, and view data sent + received under “Cellular Network Data”).

I use NetCounter on all my Android phones. It's made by a Swiss guy, so you know it must be accurate :p
None of my Android phones has any data counter built in. Would be nice to include in a future build, but I guess not necessary since "there's an app for that".
What's all the #DATA and ICS about? Some kind of SMS service?

Data counters on your phone show actual data thru the phones port, while network-side counters may show in a different way. For ex. some network operators count a minimum 20kb per connection, altho your phone may have only sent 5kb data.

The orange warning bar is draggable up and down so the warning limit is adjustable. If the limiter checkbox above is enabled, the red limiter bar becomes draggable as well.

ICS = Ice Cream Sandwich. Android 4.0. Most android phones are on 2.3 (Gingerbread) or 2.2 (Froyo)
