I'm thinking to buy the new SonyEricsson C905i as it has wifi and GPS (with Google Maps) built in it. But it isn't a "Smart Phone" ..I don't think...ie: doesn't have Windows Mobile...and it doesn't mention anything about Symbian... ...so I'm wondering: can I install software like Skype or SIP phone applications? ...or do I need to have a "Smart Phone" for that? ...and can I install my own web browser? I'm asking the question generally, but if anyone knows specifically about the SE c905i it would be nice to know.. PS- Skype has downloads for the following listed on their website. I see "Windows Mobile" and a Nokia phone specifically, but what about Symbian or other mobile phone OS's? Windows Windows (Business version) Windows (Beta) Mac OS X Linux Windows Mobile WiFi phones Cordless phones 3 Skypephone Nokia N800/N810
It looks like that phone has Java support, so you can get a few apps on there. I think you can usually use the browser to download a jar file. It looks like Skype released a Java client back in April. That phone runs Google Maps, which is most easily installed from their website. I imagine Skype has something similar setup. I saw the C902 on the compatibility list, but the C905 appears to be newer than the list. Unfortunately, from what I can tell, the "Mobile" Java client for Skype just turns a Skype call into a local call. It still uses your minutes, so it would only be useful for international calls or someone who has an unlimited local calling plan.
Actually, I was thinking to use Skype over wifi (the phone has wifi). But I'm not even sure how I would download Skype or how to run it (is anyone running Skype on a non-smart phone? How to do it? ). I should get the phone in a few weeks, then I guess I'll play around and see...
You can see what installable clients Skype has here. I use the Windows Mobile version on my "smart" HTC 8925 Tilt over WiFi--it could use 3G as well. COtech
