I just don't see the point of PTT if you're not using it in a work environment. Why not just call the person?

LOL kill Verizons PTT??? Yeah OK. MAYBE when sprints Network acutly works as well as Verizons does i could see SOME competiton. Until then, it will be another feeble attempt buy a crapy carrier to sell something that will prolly never work right. Oh and lets not even get started on who has MORE PTT coverage. [IMG]

This is great...you people are already arguing who's PTT is better, and Sprint hasn't even released it yet. Nextel is the king of PTT, and will continue to be until the latency issues are eliminated. As I'm sure sprint has some tricks up their sleeves[IMG] well just have to wait and see..

If Verizon plans on staying on top of the PTT arena, they better offer more than ONE phone, and better plans.

I wonder how long it will be until Nextel is...DONE!

I compared the so-called latency between my friends' V-60P and my issued Southern LINC portable. Big deal. Here's a scenario for you all...WHY THE HECK ARE YOU ON A RADIO/PHONE IF YOU ARE STANDING RIGHT IN FRONT OF SOMEONE?
I don't stand if front of my coworkers with my issued radios or phones if we are sitting across the table from each other. Only some dork or loser who wants EVERYONE AROUND HIM to KNOW he is on a RADIO or CELPHONE would do such a thing, and IMO, they should be pointed out and ostracized for doing it.

And if instant communication is critical (mining, security, public safety, etc), you need NOT be on ANYONE'S network, especially if it is packet switched...delay is a caveat. You need to be on SIMPLEX ANALOG FM VOICE. (I still shudder when I see blasting crews using iDEN radios....ewww...the thought of even a few hundred millisecond delay could create disaster). Hmmm, blasting crews that use IDEN phones, isnt that asking for death? I know what happens when my phone is sitting next to a monitor, tv or a radio, why would anyone who works with explosives take that risk?

So how did the latency of your V60p compared to your IDEN phone MrFlashport? How different were they?

The delay varied between 4 and 7 seconds on the verizon phone, but the biggest thing that the V60 did was take more time to affiliate and setup a PTT call whereas the Southern LINC "Instant Linc" (aka Private Call as we know it) takes only a 1/2 to 1 sec to initiate a call, and the delay is usually no more than 2 sec max depending on where someone is on the network. OTOH, the audio quality of SL SUCKS compared to Verizon...at least in my opinion. There is more delay/latency with Verizon, no doubt, but they are totally different systems with different users in mind. Southern LINC was built by the Southern Company to replace an analog 800 trunked system that they used for their own operations (Georgia Power, Alabama Power, etc) and they defrayed the cost of such an upgrade and buildout by selling the ESMR service to other business users. SL is a traditional ESMR of today, with pricing plans accordingly. We use them because the State of Georgia EOC and various State of Georgia public safety agencies (such as GSP, DNR, DOAS, and others) use SL for administrative operations and interoperability.

It works well but I would NOT use it for a replacement for our own systems. (Scary thought: Birmingham, AL PD uses SL for dispatch and PD operations....but they still have their old UHF repeaters and portables around for a backup)

Can't wait to try Sprint's PTT out.

You know everyone complains about Verizons Latency issues. Now i say, WHO CARES!!! WHen someone is 10 miles away and u PTT them, will they realy tell the diffrence?? I think not. CDMA PTT is by far WAY BETTER in many aspects then any SMR type PTT. In the near futre the latency will be worked out, ANd newer and better handsets will be interduced. Lets all be pateint with Verizon as they are new to this and are already kicking butt! [IMG]

If they're ten miles away, why wouldn't you call them and have a full-duplex, regular phone call? Or do you LIKE that annoying "breep" sound? Honestly.

It was a figure of speech for crying out loud. The point is when u PTT someone they will be a distance that the lag would not matter much at all.

That's true. When you are using PTT, the delay is unnoticeable to a certain degree. But just wait until Kodiak's technology begins to be used. It will blow away Nextel with latency that matches or surpasses that of Nextel.

It was the non-Camera Sanyo and people...it looks lilke one sweet litle phone with speaeker phone. Sprint is going to woop @$$ coming out the gate becuaee if what he said is correct Readylink is going to be cheaper ans start with 3-5 phones.

Another desperate attempt to gain back all the customers they plan on losing by the end of this month. Lame. If they plan on being so competitive they better allow their readylink service to be used while roaming just like they do with the rest of their calling plans. I might be outnumbered on this thread, but I'm not afraid to say the truth.

You know, if they could allow Readylink to work while roaming TRUST ME, THEY WOULD!
Problem is, Sprints proprietary footprint (which is also Readylinks footprint) is limited to Major metropolitan cities and some extended coverage that they just finished building.
Sure you can talk using someone elses towers, BUT those towers are not optimized nor have they the capacity to allow Data services such as Vision and Readylink to work.
Sprint is not going to lose a lot of customers come WLNP, in fact they are going to gain more not only because Sprint is the better choice for a lot of people who currently use GSM spotty carriers but also because they now have a rebate on their handsets for existing customers.

I agree that PTT isn't really neccesary unless you are in a work environment. If you talk to someone that much, and you have the same carrier, then why not take advantage of same carrier minutes. Sprint offers unlimited and Verizon 1000. I sell both Verizon and Sprint at work, and there haven't been that many Alltel customers looking to switch to either, despite their obvious benefits over Nextel etc... But PTT outside of work environments is far too expensive overall.

No, I was unaware that Nextel had a walkie-talkie feature. I was fairly sure that PTT meant Push To Talk, but I didn't know if the acronym was the same in the Wireless World. Thanks for the education! [IMG]

It looks like XprtCop's prediction a couple of months ago turned out to be right on. Sprint hasn't really been affected by WLNP so far. In the latest numbers (Q4 2003) they reported a churn rate the same as the 3rd Quarter and down significantly from a year ago at this time while adding 1 million new customers in the quarter.

....which is what I've been claiming all along. Churn rate is not going to be dramatically affacted by WLNP. I wonder what those "analysts" that predicted that were smoking.

What I understand, why no new phones have come out to Verizon is they are going to use a push to talk system similar to Alltel on new phones color phones. The new phones what I understand will be out in March or April.
