What is the maximum you would pay for a phone? I mean, is there a $ value beyond which you simply would not pay, no matter what the phone does or has? I have a streak going - I HAVE NEVER PAID FOR A PHONE! My wife and I have had: 1. old Motorola analog phones on ATT (free with signup at Circuit City), 2. Ericcson R280LXs/ATT TDMA (free with signup at a local store), 3. Moto T720/T-Mobile (free with signup and rebate from Amazon), 4. Nokia 8265 (current phone with ATT TDMA) (free with signup and rebate from Amazon), and 5. Moto V600 (current phone with ATT GSM) (free with signup after ATT pricematch to online offer). Bottom line is, I use a phone to make calls and I fully intend to continue my streak of never paying for a handset!!
free is always good... I would probably draw the line at $400... I haven't upgraded in a while though...
Free is definetly good of course, but even better if what you're getting for free is good lol. I'd have to draw the line at $300 for a new phone and even that is expensive!
i bought one for 40$ (that allows me access to TDMA - ATT Free2Go/Cingular TDMA Nationwide for one flat rate of .25 per min) but i would only spend 150 on a phone as a last resort I love the Nokias so durable specially Nokia 1260 (which i have and bought - look above) i am NOT about all the bells and whistles (color screen is nice though) and Mmode is essential (I love ATT GSM and the LG flips - they perfect for me - although i do not have GSM now) and the Nokia 3590 is good too (if i had GSM)
As long as I qualify for New every 2, I would not pay more than $50.00 for a phone. I am not big on gimmicks, I just want a basic phone. I currently use the Nokia 3589, with the new every 2, it was free. Incidentally, it has the best RF of the entire Verizon line. I am
To date, I've never had to pay more than $30 for a phone...that was a while ago (BOGO free type of deals)... Even my current Samsung a670's (mine and my husband's) was BOGO free, but get 2 rebates (for 2 phones) which came to NOTHING!! $140.00/phone BOGO free Get 2 $70 rebates (since we "bought" 2) Get $140 back...total = $0000000!!! I've paid through Ebay my v60i, but I don't cound that purchase as that was an optional thing...if you do count it, then put me down for $100...
My limit would be $500.00 which is what I paid for my current phone, for it's size and the fact that Motorola will never release it here.
Sorry to play the devils advocate but, this is precisely the reason why our society is such a "cry-baby" when we finally hit reality and have to open the wallet. We get used to get freebies all the time and then when we aren't so lucky and have to pay for what we get, then we refuse to pay for it and ON TOP OF THAT have the nerve to complain and threaten to cancel! This is getting ridiculous!
Er... if you notice I have been an ATT customer for 10 years. As far as "loyalty" goes, I am probably in the 99th percentile. So, don't hang this "refuse to pay for it and ON TOP OF THAT have the nerve to complain and threaten to cancel!" crap on me. If the system was set up where people bought handsets from handset vendors at retal prices and service from service providers, I would have no issues. Let the handset vendors compete with each other on value (i.e. price, performance, reliability, looks, whatever) and let providers compete on value (i.e price, coverage, reliability, quality, etc.). As a consumer, I will be free to choose the best handset that works for me and the best coverage that works for me. All will be well. However, the current system is not set up like that. Phones are subsidized to entice customers to sign up for contracts. And who set it up the way it is? The phone companies. Not me, but the phone companies. So, in a free market, I am free to play within the rules and find the best deal I can. I see no inconsistency or moral ambiguity here. "... this is precisely the reason why our society is such a "cry-baby" society??" Come on Bobolito, you can't hang that on me. Let's not resort to hyperbole here.... For better or for worse, the mobile phone/service buying system is what it is in this country. Given the rules under which it was set up, its evolution into what it is today in a competitive free market non-collusive economy is inevitable. You evidently don't like the way it has evolved. I have no problem with it. We must agree to disagree on this point, I guess. Different people have different goals as consumers. You may be willing to pay a premium for the most technologically advanced phone because you use it a lot. More power to you - I don't have a problem with that. I, on the other hand, don't have a need for the latest and greatest technology. Since my phone usage is limited (I rarely exceed 50 minutes a month), I am interested in the most cost-effective solution that gives me reliable calling, i.e. the cheapest handsets (can't get much cheaper than free!) and the most cost-effective plans. Works for me.
Yeah, I figured you'd get all offended and defensive. But it is the truth nontheless. Did I ever mentioned that you were the one complaining and threatening to cancel? Read my post again. It wasn't addressed to you. It was addressed in general to those who moan and complain about everything and still want free stuff. It was also addressed to those marketers who have made Americans such spoiled brats in the marketplace. I used the word "WE" if you read it correctly. But I guess if you felt guilty for what I said, there must be a reason.
Dont worry, I am neither offended nor defensive. I've been on Usenet/Internet too long to take anything too seriously. I love you all... Seriously, I am not hung up on any carrier. If I get a better deal somewhere else, I will switch. And I am not feeling "guilty" as you are insinuating. To the contrary, I am pretty open about it - I have always been. I always sign up for 1 year contracts and at the end of the 1 year, I reevaluate whether I am getting the best value for my dollar. If I am not (and this calculation involves tangible things like cost of handsets and calling plans as wells as intangibles like the inconvenience of changing a phone number if I were to switch, etc.), I have no compunction changing. If that makes me "disloyal", "a spoiled brat" or whatever pejorative phrase one choose to tag me with, you can rest assured that I lose no sleep over it.
That depends on the "phone". For a P900 $500 wouldn't be bad....but for a phone??? $300+ tax better be a D@MN good phone.
This reminds me of the old story about a man and a beautiful woman. The man walks up to the beautiful woman and says to her "Will you go to bed with me for a million dollars?" The woman stops for a minute and says, "well, I guess so...sure I will" The man says to her "Will you go to bed with me for a dollar?" The woman is suddenly quite offended and replies "What do you think I am, a hooker?" The man's reply: "Oh, we've already established that, we're just haggling over price now". Moral is, I guess we'll pay for the phone what we perceive it's worth to be..... Have a nice evening everyone! Mike
depends on the phone but i guess $300 would be my budget, unless we go back 10 years then yeah we would pay about $450-$500.........and that was for the old ugly Motorolas, so yeah $300 would be a good price today with everything that phones can do now a days.....
300$...no contract. I plan on buying the Nokia 6230 when it comes out, and sell my v400. So, considering I paid 30$ for the v400 (if my best buy rebate ever comes in), and if I can sell it for a decent price, then I am not really paying 300$ for the phone though.
If you want to buy a V400 post in the Buy | Sell | Advertise forum. That's not intended for here . The most I'd pay for a phone on or off contract would be about $300-$400. I wouldn't really buy a smartphone. Although I like the Treo 600, $550 is just too much.
Thanks, but I'll be keeping the v400. Motorola's are the ONLY brand that work in my mall on Cingular. Samsungs lock onto T-Mobile in too many places even when they pick up 2-3 bars on Cingular, Nokia's won't pick up any usable signal ANYWHERE in the building, so I'll stick with moto. Plus, I want my quadband for my trip to Paris. Good luck finding a v400, I think you'll like the phone
I agree. I plan on going with T-Mobile when I move out of The MHK and have to actually sign up for service with a contract. I'll get the reduced price on the new handset when I activate but as soon as the 12 month agreement is over I will never renew again and will purchase all my handsets in the future at cost pricing. I don't see why the wireless industry cannot go contract-less and make everyone pay for the handsets. If they did that and unlocked the handsets, competition would produce better service and better customer service, methinks. :browani:
