Heres a question that i havent seen before. How many different networks is your phone able to connect to at your home? I can get on my 8200:

    Sprint PCS
    Verizon Digital
    Verizon Analog
    AT&T Analog

    What about everyone else?

How can you tell whose network you are on, when you are on your Sprint PCS phone?

I don't think my VGA 1000 recognizes different carriers...it just says Digital Roaming or Analog Roaming, when I force it to use another carrier besides Sprint.

Without using debug menus, reprogramming with a different SID, or doing any "hacking"...

    VZW phone (v60s):
    VZW CDMA
    VZW AMPS
Cingular AMPS (outgoing 911/611/credit card calls only; VZW has to be "down" and phone has to be set to "Automatic B" for this to happen)

Cingular phone (SE T62u = GAIT):
    Cingular GSM
    Cingular TDMA
    Cingular AMPS
AT&T TDMA (outgoing 911/611/credit card calls only; Cingular has to be "down" for this to happen)
(Cingular phones are barred from AT&T and T-Mobile GSM in Atlanta; VZW AMPS is forbidden by IRDB)

    T-Mobile phones/devices (P280, Sidekick, AirCard):
    T-Mobile GSM
(both will show AT&T GSM on a manual network search but can't register on it, as T-Mobile phones are barred from AT&T in Atlanta; all three don't do 850 and so can't see Cingular GSM; even if they did 850 they'd be barred from Cingular GSM too)

    I can get:

    Sprint PCS

When forced to analog mode I get:

Verizon analog (not useable and will often switch over to AT&T quickly)
AT&T analog (somewhat useable but no roaming agreement exsists with them here so I'm asked for a credit card).

So in other words Sprint is the only carrier that works good here at my house (which is in the hills). Nextel seems to work fairly well but not great.

How do you get Verizon digital? Can you force your phone to that mode or is the Sprint signal weak enough to where it sometimes switches when set to auto?

AMPS performance isn't any indication whatsoever of how a carrier's digital service is, since most carriers that do both AMPS and digital have large numbers of digital-only sites, and most have pared down AMPS capacity to a bare minimum. I know of lots of places with lots of carriers where digital signal is -55 dBm (excellent) yet AMPS from the same carrier is -110 dBm (virtually unusable)...

I'm sure you knew that, though. ;)

Yes I did know that. I believe Verizon & AT&T digital both work better than their analog signals here (although my friends still often have trouble with both of them when they visit).

I did an experiment once that answers those questions...
    http://www.richmazz.com/Cell/Experiment.htm

Of course that was in central PA, and now I am back in Southeast PA.
On my VX4400 I *can* access:

Sprint (but not allowed on the PRL)
    Verizon digital 850
    Verizon analog
Cingular analog (for 611, 911 only as roamer1 said)
Verizon PCS? (Still confirming this one, it appears they may have 1 or 2 PCS transmitters on low power that can be picked up only with the mag-mount antenna in the attic. These seem to instantly redirect the phone to Verizon 850 when it comes across them)

I have my phone set to automatic, and evey now and then it switches over to digital roaming. The ONLY other CDMA carrier here is Verizon.

    Sprint (digital)
??? (digital roam) Sprint signal is too strong here.
Cell One/Dobson (analog roam) I wonder how long this will last.

    6600

    T-Mobile/Cingular
AT&T (can't register) A surpise to me, but found out that coverage is bleed over from NV side & AT&T has coverage all along I-40 through Mohave Co..And I thought Cingular Extend was Cell One/Dobson's new GSM network.

I get all the networks at home. It just depends which phone you use. ;)

    AT&T GSM phone:
    - AT&T GSM 1900 (-89dBm)
    - AT&T GSM 800 (-75dBm)
    - T-Mobile/Cingular is barred

    AT&T TDMA phone:
    - AT&T TDMA 800 (-75dBm)
    - AT&T AMPS (-77dBm)
    - Verizon AMPS is barred

    Verizon CDMA:
    - Verizon CDMA 800 (-75dBm)
    - Verizon AMPS (-80dBm)
    - I don't know if there are any Verizon 1900Mhz signals around.
    - I don't know if Verizon can roam on Sprint PCS.
    - AT&T AMPS is barred.

    Cingular GSM
    - T-Mobile/Cingular crappy network (-98dBm)
    - AT&T much stronger signal is barred (can't wait until the merger is done!)

    Cingular TDMA
    - AT&T TDMA800 (-75dBm)
    - AT&T AMPS (-77dBm)
    - Verizon AMPS is barred

    Sprint PCS
    - Sprint PCS (-102dBm)
    - Verizon CDMA 800 (-77dBm)
    - Verizon AMPS (-80dBm)
    - AT&T AMPS (-80dBm)

    T-Mobile
    - T-Mobile/Cingular (-98dBm)
    - AT&T is barred.

    Nextel
    - I don't know, but the phone says "No Service" ;)

    Dad's House (ground floor)

    Verizon: -89db
    Sprint -95db
    Cingular TDMA: -53db
Cingular GSM: I'd assume in the -50's.
T-Mobile: Not usable, though the phone will show service.
Nextel: Better than Verizon, but not as good as Cingular.
ATT GSM: -50's to -60's since 4/4 bars on c56

Mom's House (rural) Worst signals in my bedroom of course!
    Verizon: -90 to -103db
Cingular TDMA: -97 to -107 (barely usable)
    Cingular GSM: 4/5 or 5/5 bars on v400 2-3 bars on c56
    ATT GSM: 3/4 or 4/5 bars on v400 1-3 bars on c56
    Sprint: -80 to -105 db
Nextel: Pretty good, almost all bars on phones.
    T-Mobile: No signal

The only carrier that let's me access another is ATT, which allows me on Cingular at both locations.

I put my Cingular SIM in my P280 (which doesn't recognize the flag in the SIM that hides network selection) for that test. As for knowing about VZW being forbidden in the IRDB, I can view Cingular's TDMA/AMPS IRDB in my T62u. ;)

Is there a way I can "unflag" this flag in the sim so I can do a manual network search on my 6340i?

On my Samsung X427 at Home:

Cingular Wireless - Not sure about DB's but the phone works fine in my house.
SunCom GSM - On the same tower as Cingular so signal is the same. Cingular blocks SunCom roaming in this area though. So I can't do a network search and I'm barred from using there network.

Verizon CDMA and analog (very good)

ATT, TMO, Cingular- all networks (very weak though)

Nextel (very good, but only recently)

IMMIX (very good, but surprising since they mainly use Cingular's system in the area and Cingular sux near me- they do have their own towers too though)

Anyway to get to a menu or hack of some sort on my 6340? I remember the 6340i users being able to do a little more than me, but it's been so long that I can't remember anymore..I've been kinda outta the loop for awhile now ;)

With my AT&T Wireless phone (Samsung x426) I can access the following:

    T-Mobile (blocked)
    AT&T Wireless
    Telcel GSM (Mexican Wireless Provider)
    Telefonica MoviStar (Mexican Wireless Provider)

Sad part about this, sometimes Telefonica MoviStar has a stronger signal (at my home outside the city limits) than my AT&T Wireless and it's across the border in another country :(
