How long do you think the Q will be only available through Verizon?? I'm hoping it will only be for a few more months. I hope Alltel with get it....
Verizon has a 6 month exclusive on it. It will be out on other providers (Alltel if they want it) in December.
I read somewhere that Alltel was going to get the Q, V3M and some others around December. But I could be wrong.
What's the point? Once Verizon's exclusivity runs out on the Q, they'll be getting a better version of the Q, probably with EV-DO and other desirable features. I don't think it's worth it for Alltel to launch the Q... they should try to get another sought after phone before Verizon, like they did with the V3c. Though, I don't think Verizon is going to willingly let that happen. I think the RAZR was a fluke because it had been out in the GSM world for so long that there was no exclusivity on the CDMA version. From what I can tell, Motorola will be launching CDMA versions of their flagship phones shortly after the GSM version is launched, which is good for large CDMA carriers (Sprint & Verizon) but bad for Alltel, because they probably won't get exclusivity on new, cool phones that often.
"What's the point?" The point is that the Q is being looked at by Motorola as the next RAZR for them. Bringing a smartphone device into the hands of the masses for $200 is huge! They are anticipating 1.5 million to be sold in the first year. These are RAZR like numbers and if all goes well, it would really be a sought after device by the carriers. Not that I have any inside information, but I think the Q is going to be a phone that will be around for a while!
Maybe you're right. I don't have need of a smartphone, so perhaps I'm just not in tune with 'the masses.' I can see, from Motorola's standpoint, that the close-to-the-RAZR sales of the Q, a smartphone, are encouraging. Perhaps a wider release, even without high speed data, will be good for the Q and good for Motorola. Anything that's good for Motorola, is good for MOTOhooligan.
Moto, I agree, a smartphone ins't for everyone. However, at a $200 price point, it blows the Treo and iPAQ $400+ devices out of the water. It alliws for people to get a converged device without feeling like they are spending the equivilent to a rent payment on thier phone.
If the Q had been out when I got the V3c from Alltel. I may have went with the Q. I was wanting a Treo, but did not want to spend double what I ended up spending on the V3c. I think with the price point on the Q set low around $200 would be a great sale for Motorola.
I have seen one of the test models from Moto of the Q. Its cute. Now we have to wait for two things, Verizon's exclusivness to go away and our test lab to approve. Since we got it this early, the testing shoud be done by the time we are allowed to sell it.
