Hey folks. I'm brand new here. Name's Dan and I'm from Westchester County in New York. I have service through Verizon, but my contract recently expired so i'm looking to switch to T-Mobile for 2 reasons. GSM is apparently better technology, and the Motorola A630 is exactly what I need in a phone (bluetooth, camera, QWERTY keyboard). Thing is.. i know of NOBODY with TMobile in my area.. maybe it's not even available. I dunno. Anybody from this area that can vouch for them?
Welcome to WirelessAdvisor first of all. There is no definite answer on what technology is better-both have their ups and downs. I guess it comes down to personal preference. I'm not sure if you've already done that, but first off I'd take a look at their coverage maps located at www.t-mobile.com/coverage There you will find a national coverage map and a street level coverage map which lets you plug in street addresses to check the signal level. I hope that's a good start. ~Andy P.S. Is it a bad sign that nobody uses T-Mobile in your area???
check the personal coverage check on their website: white means Dead Spot, green means you're near their Tower Light grey you'll a get drop call.
From Peronal experience, If you are used to VZW coverage in Westchester/Rockland, you Will notice a serious downgrade in service overall if you switch to T-mobile. Also, I'm sure there isn't Anyone familiar with both CDMA & GSM that would say GSM is a "better" technology, it is a "different" technology only......
VZW SHOULD ALSO make a Personal Street Coverage Map like T-Mobile. Talk is Cheap, anybody can make a claim. So a hard copy proof is Like Street Detail Coverage is the best. Unless VZW wants to Hide Something. I don't undestand what's Holding Back VZW from making this Kind of Map.
wow.. you guys responded quickly. i didn't expect that from a forum about phones. I checked TMobile's coverage map.. i'm in the white area. but just by glancing at the US map, it looks like they barely cover any of the US at all. What's their deal?
T-Mobile Basically cover the Cities, at least they're truthful. It's only them that has this Map, other Carriers are hiding something.
Calm down jones Verizon isn't trying to hide anything, since their network, overall, covers much more than T-Mobile's native network. Verizon has always been slow, and T-Mobile is the only one publishing their detailed compass maps for everyone to see.
Well if you're in the white area then I guess you won't have a lot/any service with T-Mobile at your home. You can always try them out for 14 days if you really want to have first hand experience.
Like the fact that their network is larger??? T-Mobile deserves a lot for publishing their detailed street maps online, I agree, but I don't think that other carriers are hiding something, since, overall, most of them have a larger native network than T-Mobile.
hmm.. according to the coverage maps i found on GSM World.. it appears Cingular has coverage in my area. too bad their decision to offer the Motorola A630 is still tentative, according to phonescoop.
If you are really interested in Cingular Coverage in your area give me your zip code and I can see what I can do(in regards to getting a detailed map).
If you can find the Street where you Live or work like Main St or whatever Name it is, then it is a Street Coverage Map. I'm referring to other Carriers Not just VZW in Particular.
I guess if you are just driving by Westchester County and not living there, then T-Mobile is ok. They seem to have the highways covered well, as usual. However, I suggest you look somewhere else, especially since you live in Westchester 'NIMBY' County. To be honest, chances are the only carriers that will work for you are Verizon and Cingular. Even Sprint and Nextel are a failure in that area.
just spoke with a rep from cingular. my house is in a Medium coverage area according to his employee only coverage map, but 3 miles away is high coverage. still they don't offer the A630 that I want, so i found an unlocked one online for $400.. geeeeez, that's expensive.
so you already saw your detailed coverage map? Good, cause it would've taken me some more time to get one to you
haven't seen it, but i'm going by what the sales rep told me he saw on his map. the sales rep didn't even know we could see the coverage maps ourselves. I asked him if they had the coverage maps and he said "sure you can check it yourself by going to rates and plans on the website" then he put me on hold for a few minutes as he went to speak with his supervisor, came back and said "sorry, i was wrong. the coverage maps are only available to employees on our cingular intranet."
