How's coverage in the Conejo Valley, particularly Newbury Park south of the 101, including Portrero Ranch and DOs Vientos areas? Also the surrounding areas, like Hidden Valley, PCH between LA/Ventura County line north to Point Mugu, the canyons of Malibu, etc.?
Thousand Oaks seems like it still has some weak spots with Sprint. On my recent trip to Santa Barbara I noticed kind of a poor signal along a stretch of the 101. I know they have some new sites planned for Thousand Oaks in the near future but not sure when they will be finished. This is one of the few areas that Sprint is still lacking coverage in. The main Canyon roads in Malibu seem to be well covered with microcells which are placed close together. Oxnard and Ventura have great coverage.
Thanks for the info, Larry. The local Sprint store essentially said the same thing to me a long time ago, citing NIMBY and City Hall obstructionists (typical, I might add, for this area). Since Sprint has been so successful in overcoming this kind of opposition in other regions of SoCal, I was wondering if this area was on their "things to do" list for anytime soon (soon being a rather nebulous term with such promises)?
I can tell you that Thousand Oaks has been the toughest out of any City Sprint has had to deal with in Ventura County. They have rejected at least 3 cell site proposals over the past 3 years that would have given Sprint great coverage in the city. They did finally get one approved recently and are trying to get 2 more. The one they got approved should be built in about 3-4 months.
This is my first post. I live at the dead end of Las Virgenes/Malibu Canyon road, about 7 mins east off the 101 at the Malibu exit. My job essentially takes me all over the canyons of this area from Topanga all the way up to the 23N exit, every single day. Too bad no cell phone companies are hiring testers I could make some extra money. I moved to California with Cingular about 3 years ago; where I came from in Ohio, I swore I'd never use Sprint again and Cingular dominated. Had to fight to get out of all the contracts but I eventually switched everyone to Sprint after trying both Verizon and Cingular all over these areas. I have multiple phones and networks, and simply based on curiosity I pay close attention. Based on my experience Sprint surprisingly has superior coverage in the T.O./Calabasas area. There are three guaranteed cingular dead zones on malibu canyon road between PCH and the 101, while Sprint coverage is excellent. In Malibu (by pepperdine) the coverage used to also be very weak; now I have noticed I can roam onto Verizon's year-or-so old "new" tower on the upper campus of Pepperdine's graduate school. That has solved the "malibu sprint coverage" problem as well as the problems of hundreds of other students that suffered with Sprint at pepperdine. I also have noticed construction ongoing every day at the cell site behind the sheriff station on Olsen Rd. Maybe its the MetroPCS tower someone was talking about, or maybe its the new sprint tower they show on their map "coming in the next 90 days?"? or is this the same thing... or nothing... anyone know?
Sprint doesn't have anything coming in Thousand Oaks in the next 90 days. Where do you see that on their map? From what I can tell there is a Nextel (IDEN only) tower coming to that location on Olsen so maybe that's what you're seeing. Sprint does have a microcell site planned at Erbes and Fallmouth but it's not showing yet on the public online maps. Sprint has 2 sites planned to be built on Pepperdine's campus. They should be up by the end of this year.
WOW, those pepperdine towers will be good for sprint and sprint users alike (I bet with all those students roaming on verizon it sucks for sprint) Anyway that "new" sprint tower I was referring to is now showing up as completed in the last 90 days, so it must be done. I hadn't looked at the map in a while, my bad. Hey quick question, I can't get any service for any carrier here in my well-known hole in Malibu Canyon. We have to use a repeater and a directional Yagi currently pointed southwest/101ish on the roof to get cell/EVDO RevA service. With that said, I was getting excited because (I know its weird) but there is a small patch of red stripes directly centered on our dead zone on the map. The only new tower I see "coming" anywhere nearby is near Vanowen St. in Woodland Hills.? Does this mean Sprint might be increasing its coverage here, since you seem to be a genious on these matters? Maybe I can ditch the P.I.T.A. repeater The address is 5940 las virgenes rd. 91302. I dont care, its the same address for 800 units, no one will find me.
Nope there's nothing planned near that address at all. The one planned along Vanowen is at Fallbrook near West Hills and should be coming any day now. There's also another Sprint site coming at Vanowen and Topanga near the mall that's already built but there's been a delay in getting it active.
The Sprint sites at Pepperdine are going to be located on the roof of the Keck Science Building and the other on the Page Residential Complex.
For best coverage...aim your yagi at the office building on the South East corner of Las Virgenes and Mureau. (Basically, straight down Las Virgenes from your area). The site at Topanga/Vanowen that you see will not provide you with any additional coverage, nor will the one at Fallbrook. Though there is also a tentative planned site overlooking the 101 a tad south on the 101 from Las Virgenes that will provide some additional fringe coverage to your area (If you're high enough back).
