for me its no different than with any other phone I have used..maybe a bar or two lower...powers that be at work complain that they drop calls but us little bottomfeeders have no problems. get it- you will love it.

My boss says its pretty bad in his office. Then again, it's 38 Floors up so that may be a factor. My Samsung i730 tops it easily.

My Dad's company went with Treo 650's for everyone, Most people got the CDMA version, and those people complain that they drop calls more often than their old phones. The few that got the GSM version (including Dad) are very pleased with them. Hope this helps you out, Jay

Re: how is the reception wiht the TREO650 ? ? ?

its all based on carrier preference.
I prefer Verizon in general, but the data plans are outrageous so I do use it for that. If you are in Jersey I would reccomend Verizon, but try out different carriers- There is a return policy from all..

reception wise are we talking voice clarity?
if so a program called volumecare fixes all
Low volume is a nuance of the treo but this handy program fixes all.
    just ask wiggy

when you say reception, are you just referring to the bars??? if so, I get a few less bars on my Treo compared to my other phones, but I don't drop calls still!!!

My Reception quality is great. No choppiness... Congrats on your Treo!!!

Re: how is the reception wiht the TREO650 ? ? ?

These posts have been very helpful. I just got a Bluetooth-enabled Lexus GS430 and drive a LOT in rural areas around the country. Reception capability is important to me in those fringe areas. Verizon is the only service that's practical for us, even though it's limited to CDMA and therefore won't transfer data to the car (the controls will work fine, just no transfer of phone book).

The choices seem to narrow down to a mere phone (we've decided on a Motorola 815 for my wife), a Blackberry 7250 (Sort of a kluge with no camera or real browser but immune to Bluetooth corruption), or a TREO 650. I've never had a PDA, and probably don't need one, but it sure seems cool (that's a word we 60-year-olds used before the rest of you were born). I'm told I can exchange it for a MOTO 815 so long as I don't put more than 30 minutes on it, so we plan to drive around with both phones checking the number of bars on each.

From what several of you have said, though, bars are not the only consideration. Clarity can be enhanced with a simple download (anyone have the URL or how to do that?), and dropped calls have not been a big problem.

Finally, does anyone else experience dropped calls when driving by cell towers? We have that problem on 3 different phones (using Alltel service), in several states. It doesn't seem to be a "hand-off" problem, but rather that the towers themselves cause some kind on interference with perfectly good reception when we get within about 1/4 mile, then the interference goes away after we drive past. Surely such interference is illegal.

    Thanks.
    Bill

Re: how is the reception wiht the TREO650 ? ? ?

I've now had the Verizon TREO 650 for a week, and taken it on the road in semi-rural Texas (two-lanes between Horseshoe Bay and Austin, to Kerrville, and to Houston, total of about 400 miles of country driving). No problems so far even with the phone sitting down by the dashboard & away from windows (connected to the car with Bluetooth). If anything, the reception is better than that of my old Motorola with Alltel (which shares towers with Verizon, I think). Don't know how it will compare to my wife's new Motorola 815.

Re: how is the reception wiht the TREO650 ? ? ?

i love my treo650 but the reception just isnt cutting it. im tempted to try to get a new one somehow. it really is nowhere near as good as my old a670 was....not even close.

i drop calls now a lot more than i used to. and i am in the same exact spots.

but the treo itself is an amazing thing. love it and the battery life is much better than i expected. the bluetooth is great too.

anyone know how to go about getting an exchange on the treo ? ? ?

im hoping its justthis particular unit that has the bad reception.

well i called tech support from VZW and they agree, i drop way too many calls. so they are gonna send me a new one. i gotta get all info in the new one and send the old one back.

i hope this new one is better now.

Re: how is the reception wiht the TREO650 ? ? ?

Hope the new one is better. I'm still satisfied with my rural Texas reception (just drove another 170 miles on back roads). Not to mention that I'm having a blast with my very first PDA.

When I was a kid, we were just getting phones with party lines and cranks on the side (yeah, sure, and my pet dinosaur ate up all the rocks in my rock garden). Close enough. Suffice to say that after starting with an Osborne O-1 during middle age, this stuff is great.
