If we want to get out of my contract and port our two numbers to Verizon or Cingular, would Verizon and/or Cingular pay two ETF's if we sign up with them for three Family Plans with three phones?

Any help and personal experience is appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

You could try, but I really doubt they would be willing to do that. I haven't heard of any providers doing that for potential customers before. If you've got a friend at a store, maybe you can convince him/her to waive some activation fees. That might be the best you can do.

I thought I remember reading some stories on WA about people porting their number to another carrier and having the carrier doing that for them.

I guess I was mistaken. Oh well. It was worth a shot. ;)

    Thanks for your help wgray8231.

Gamer, you may want to research some more, i also read somewhere, here or at Hofo about carriers paying for ETF, though i don't think it's common practice.

I have seen authorize dealers do it at the malls. But I just wonder if they actually did it. Those reps are just so trust worthly & knowledgeable.

I rather go directly to the store...since I don't trust authorized dealers. No offense to anyone that is an authorized dealer....but I rather go into an actual store since I am used to doing that.

Let us know how you make out, I haven't heard of any carriers willing to shell out the ETF for a customer, it actually doesn't make alot of sense unless they sold you the phone at retail then it would take about the same time to make back some of the money. Anything is possible with the right sales pitch.

I agree Gamer, going to the store directly has gotten me better results as well. I guess you could always ask and research- it doesn't hurt. Let us know what you find, I have personally never heard of this happening, but I don't hear everything ;)

You can also try to do a "change of responsibility". I am working on it right now, getting someone to take over my plan. Basically they do a credit check on someone else and move your account into that person's name. This way you wipe your hands of the account, and are not responsible for any charges on it, and don't have to pay an ETF either!

It has gotten worse since within the past few months.

If Verizon or another carrier doesn't do anything like that, then I guess we will either have to spend the $300 to get out of the contract, or call them and see tell them about the coverage with Sprint and see if there is a way to fix it. That way, we have proof that we have called them and tried to resolve it.

If that doesn't work, then I guess we are stuck with them until next March.

Like I previously mentioned, I thought I read something on WA that happened where the person got another carrier to pay their ETF. Maybe I am mistaken.

I will let everyone know what happens.

I don't either, start hunting HoFo and that is where I found the person that is looking to do it. I don't even know where this person lives yet, it has all be done through the internet.

It would need to become unusable in places where it used to and you need it to. If the signal was great at home when you signed up and now you can't receive any calls, I'd start doing some investigation. Call Sprint every day and complain. Eventually, they will listen.

Well right now, I turned my phone on in my house, and the phone is constantly switching from "Entering Sprint Service Area" to Looking for Signal, to Digital Roam, to Analog Roam.

Mostly it is on Analog Roam or Looking for Signal to 0 bars (-104 db's) on Sprint's network.

I am currently making notes of the dates and times that this is happening so when I call Sprint, I will have just cause to call them.

So this only happens during some times of the day? Maybe if you complain enough they will let you out of your contract w/out paying the ETF? Take it to a higher level tech or something, they might consider you leaving without an ETF.

Maybe, but I have tried this and the folks at Sprint weren't too receptive. I waited until I was out of contract to leave. It's hard to get out of that contract because the fine print says that you will not have service everywhere, including indoors.

How do I get a higher level tech?

As of right now, I am getting -104 db's......I used to get -98 db's, but it has been getting worse in the past two months.

It is bothering me, so naturally I am p-ed off and frustrated.

I also have read that part.

But what I used to get service, and the service has gotten worse?

The problem is not my phone, since up on my campus I get a good signal (-72 db's outdoors, -93 indoors).

So when I call Sprint, they can't use that BS on me.

I honestly feel bad for you. I had the same problem with sprint for 3 months at an apartment in Tucson. It was AWFUL! Fortunately for me, they installed a tower and my problem went away...

There is a tower 3-4 miles away, but the panels aren't pointed in my direction. :(

The closest tower that I am getting a signal from is 5-6 miles away.

5-6 miles?!? That seems a bit far. I didn't know PCS signals could travel that far based on their FCC power output limitations.

My recommendation would be to visit your nearest store and speak with a manager. Maybe he can have your area investigated. It's possible the tower serving your area had it's panels adjusted a bit. Hopefully that's due to a pending turnup of another one, but more than likely it would be to improve coverage in an area deemed more important. The store manager should be able to assist you.

You can also ask the store manager whom you should talk to in order to be let out of your contract early; tell him service Sprint provides has gotten worse and you've complained for months and nothing has happened. Be nice and polite, maybe he will help you and let you go early.

Are you in a rural area of South Florida? Most of the towers here in Phoenix are 1/2 mile to 2 miles apart. They seem to be every main street throughout most of the city...

I wouldn't consider my area to be "rural".

My county has 300,000 people in it.

So I wouldn't consider my county or my five county area to be "rural".

Rural areas of Florida are more in the center of the state, instead of within a few miles of the coast like we are (2.5 miles to be exact from the Gulf of Mexico).

I heard it was against the law for a carrier to pay another carriers' ETF. You could try what I did, I e-mailed the CEO of Cingular Saturday afternoon, and got a call from a cell site developer on Cingular Monday and a call from a local store manager as well. I get a tower less that 1/5 of a mile west of my home in less than 5 months. They already knew about the problem, it was recent that they'd discovered it though.
