reading some of these threads i see alot of misinformation, there was a law passes about a year ago stating that carriers had to give you the unlock codes and i also read on one here that you need cables to unlock motorolas, tha is not true. t-mobile will walk you threw it. att customer service acts like they are stupid and don't know what your talking about...they know. And know you dont need a new sim like some of the deals were saying on this thread/ we have unlocked tons of motos and even an iphone with tmobiles help if you are using it on their network

The post you quoted in your reply is from 2005, so yes, there may be some out-dated information.

The carriers will only help you unlock one of their phones if you are a current customer and meet other requirements. Unlocking is not so easy (or free) if you're not an active customer of the carrier the phone is locked to.

You are partly correct. You need a cable to unlock a Motorola if the carrier does not give you the code. Code generators don't work on Motorolas.

My understanding has been that the carriers don't have to provide the subsidy unlock codes - but it is not illegal to unlock your own equipment, and they cannot keep you from doing so nor do they have any recourse if you do. Have I lost track of things?

I do not gave an AT&T account. I just called them, they said I don't need an account, to get the code. They said they will call me by 4/22 and resolve the issue. It doesn't cost anything to get the code from them.

So you gave them your phone's IMEI number? If you don't have an account with them, how are they going to call you? Even if you gave them your information, do you really think they'll call you back?

I hope, for your sake, you weren't just sold a bill of goods. If they do call back and resolve the issue, let us know.

I have a hard time believing AT&T will go out of their way to help you when you're not even a customer of theirs, but then again, stranger things have happened.

Well, I read on here that they did that. SO, I thought I would give it a try. They did exactly the others were saying. They created me a non customer account. They asked me for my home address, email and cell #. They said they would give me the code but it would take a little longer only because the razr v3 phone I have it a little older by cingular not at&t. The INEI number is older. That is why she had to put in a trouble ticket. I specificly asked if they would be giving me the code and free. She said yes.

Wow. I had no idea they did that.

Let us know if they kept their word and get you the unlock code.

Where did you get your Cingular branded Razr V3?

I have seen some indicate that if you paid full retail price (and I presume that means that you can substantiate the fact) that they will provide the subsidy unlock code even for non-customers. Did you have to provide any proof of purchase information?

    UPDATE:
I called to check on my case, today. They said it is still pending. I will get an email or a phone call with directions, on how to do it. They said, they get the code from the motorola. Once then obtain it, they will contact me. The case is to be resolved by 4/22. Different person with at&t has now said the same the. I will get the code, no charge. I will keep you updated.

I don't currently have one that needs to be unlocked. :) I was just curious as to how lax at&t really has become re: giving out the subsidy unlock code.

It used to be that you would have had to have your family member contact them - if they still had an active account and met the requirements, at&t would give them the code. It still may depend on the rep you happen to get, but there are more reports of people who don't have an active at&t account being able to obtain it recently, so I wondered about your circumstances. They have definitely "loosened" the process over the last year - front line customer service seems to be able to immediately obtain the code now - at least for active at&t customers. It used to be that every request was submitted to another department who then e-mailed you the code and instructions for using it (within a few days) if you met at&t's requirements.

Ummm, Don't know exactly what you're asking for, but it didn't sound nice. Can you please rephrase your question again in English?

Jay, let me take a shot at this..

You can dial 611 from your HOT PINK RAZR and ask for customer service, if you talk to them in English you might be able to get an unlock code......good luck and welcome to WA. :coolshade

I had a cingular account for two years, during which time it switched to AT&T. Then I put a pay-as-you-go SIM card in it from a nokia phone, because I didn't know anything about unlock codes.

I recently contacted AT&T to get the subsidy unlock code for the RAZR. They said use the pay-as-you-go account for six months and we will give it to you. I would like to pay someone to unlock it now.

Anyone know of a reputable site that will do it?

You might try contacting at&t customer service again just to see if you get a more helpful customer service representative - unfortunately it's the luck of the draw sometimes, and some reps are a lot more helpful than others.

Since you are still an at&t customer (albeit prepaid), but you purchased the Razr for a postpaid account and fulfilled your contract, if you have the specifics re: your prior postpaid account handy (i.e. phone/account number/dates of service) then I'd make the argument that they should provide you with the code for that phone. (Plus the fact that they will do so prior to the six month timeframe if you pay full retail price for a device.)

    Thanks hme83.

I have finally gotten through to someone at AT&T. It took 3 tries. If you get a call center in a foreign country, forget it!

I was able to get a very nice, helpful woman to request a subsidy unlock code from motorola. They will email me back. The previous attempts were unsuccessful because they do not have an unlock code in their system and they didn't want to be bothered to submit the request, so they told me I couldn't have it, or the phone didn't have a code.

Hopefully, AT&T will follow through on this and I'll post back to let others know the results, for people with the same problem.

You're welcome and glad to hear you were able to get a rep to submit the request on your behalf; many times that is the worst part of the battle so hopefully the rest will go smoothly. :)

I had 2 RAZR V3i's purchased from an eBay store (no longer in business) and used them on ATT prepaid accounts for about 10 months.

In preparation for traveling overseas I ported the 2 phone #s to a Phone.com account and that port completed, closing the ATT accounts.

I never realized the phones weren't unlocked until I tried activating them on an Airtel network here in India and got the "Enter Subsidy Password" screen.

Even though the accounts were closed, 15 minutes on Skype to an ATT CSR in Florida got me the unlock codes - I told her straight-up what happened and no wheedling begging or scamming was required. So they've either liberalized their policies or I got a very helpful CSR (working at midnight their time.)

Note that before I got the correct codes I'd fiddled around with bogus codes enough that i got the dreaded "contact service provider" screen in place of the Unlock dialog. That put me in a panic until I realized that screen WILL EVENTUALLY TIME OUT (say 3 minutes or so) and the Unlock dialog screen reappeared. I entered my unlock codes and was good to go!

I've never heard of the screen timing out. That's good to know. Thanks for sharing.
