I have a few questions about setting up a wireless connection in my home. I know I should know this but I am not sure. I currently have a desktop PC that is connected to my cable modem and there is no router invovled at this point in time. I have ordered a laptop with the internal wireless card blah blah blah. I will be getting rid of my desktop when this comes. I will be getting a wireless g router from my parents and here is my question. I know that the router needs to be hooked up to a computer to set it up at first. But lets say after this I want to go in the front room is it possible to have the router sending out the internet without it being set up to a computer>? So the only thing at my computer desk it my router and modem?? If this does not make sense let me know. Because If I need a computer connected at all times then I will keep my desktop. Ryan
Hi Ryan, Here's what you should do. Unplug the CAT5 cable that goes from the output of the cable modem to your desktop and connect it to the WAN port of the router. Get another CAT5 cable and connect it from one of the LAN ports of the router to the RJ45 port on your computer that used to have the cable from the cable modem coming into it. Now it is time to set up the router. Reboot everything. From your browser, type in http://192.168.0.1 or something like that (you should refer to your router manual). It will pull up the configuration page for the router. Set everything up including the wireless page. It is best to consider some kind of encryption - this will require you to set up a key on your laptop as well for them to talk to each other. Once you have established wireless connectivity, it does not matter whether or not you have a wired connection to the router. You can disconnect your desktop and connect only through your wireless laptop and you'll be fine.
Another point to make is disable remote administration, and change the IP of the router. This makes it more difficult if someone tries to hack your network from the outside. -Jay
And block all WAN requests. This will make you unpingable which is really not a big deal unless you want to host a website or something like that.
Thanks guys when I gte my laptop I will try this and if I have any problems I will ask them here thanks again. Ryan
Bought a linksys/wireless for our house - 4 computers, 2 laptops and 1 PSP. I was having problems getting things setup, so I called their 800 number. The guy gave me their website and told me to run their setup program from the website. I tried it and was pretty amazed. It gave me complete/interactive steps and I had it up and running it less than 15 minutes, including 128 byte security on it.
If your using WEP (even 128 bit) and you have a newer (less than 2 years old) wireless router....swith to WPA. WEP is too easy to hack. http://www.tomsnetworking.com/2005/05/10/how_to_crack_wep_/
I have two desktop computer sitting next to each other. One has full signal to the router downstairs yet the other only shows 1 bar and will not connect. I have switched the antenna's and the same computers have the same problems so it is not the antenna. Any help? Thanks
Um I would just try and look at the Wireless Card itself try switching that and if it yeilds the same problems then it is the card.
