I've been in Israel since early July and listen to local radio where I've heard advertised for Pelephone a local mobile provider Pelephone|ôìàôåï|òîåã äáéú and they talk of "high speed GSM" and I'm wondering if this is some sort of HSDPA, HSPA or a 4th generation wireless standard or other since they are a CDMA provider as far as I know.
If I remember correctly, there was an upgrade to 2G GSM that got close to 3G speeds, but the US carriers didn't opt for it since they already had invested heavily in 3G technology.
I can't speak Isralei, but I know how to use Google Pelephone|ôìàôåï|HIGH SPEED GSM ...since the URL mentions "3G" and "umts" I'll wager they refer to UMTS as "high speed GSM" (maybe you can translate the page content for us?). Some people call any 3GPP technology (GSM/EDGE/UMTS/HSPA/LTE) as being in the "GSM family". I think the GSMA propogates this, but in my opinion, GSM is GSM, UMTS is UMTS, and there should be a distinction, and not refer to UMTS/HSPA as a form of GSM, because it isn't, altho it came from the same family...
I don't know why a CDMA-based carrier (Pelephone) would opt for something based on 2G GSM considering that the regular "GSM" operators Orange and Cellcom already have 3G as HSDPA.
