My NE2 upgrade is coming up on July 23. I have been debating the past few months which smartphone to get. My choices have been primarily the:

Motorola Q, Treo 700p, or the Treo 700w

I'm leaning towards the Q, but I'm still not fully convinced yet...

Of the six Verizon smartphones (minus any Blackberry's), which one would you recommend?

Should I just forget about a smartphone and go the way of the Lg "Chocolate" phone or something else?

Since this is for two years, I want something on the high-end that won't become too obsolete by May 2008. BTW, any Samsung phone (except the i730/i830) is out of the question.

    Thanks for your help! :D

    Mike

its hard to say for the palms because they don't specify which bands and frequencies they work on....but the Q is all-digital which means you would lose coverage when entering and analog area.....which means slightly less coverage.....i personally don't have much experience with the palms but i don't like the operating system much so my opinion isn't going to be accurate...

reasonably said....and totally sensible......most of those phones are aimed towards businessmen and they have all these data capabilities so a lot of the features on those phones will be useless without a big data plan

Agreed, I should have been more clear about what I am looking for.

Since this is my primary line, I would want to keep extensive contact and calendar information, basically my computer away from home. I'm not too concerned with Internet access. Maybe occasionally I will connect to the web, but it is not an earth-shaking need.

Being able to check e-mail is moderately important. I am looking for something reliable, not too glitchy, but not too complex. I would prefer a camera to come with it. Wi-Fi is not a must. Having full MS Office is also not urgent, but being able to sync with Outlook would be welcome.

I'm looking for something more than a phone, but not quite a laptop.

If I need to provide further detail, let me know.

For those of you that have any one of these devices, what are your feelings about them?

When I win the lottery, I'll get you one, Wiggy! ;)

Let me ask you, is there really that much of a difference between the 650 and the 700p? Is the difference the newness of the 700p and it's "new" price? Or is it just a refresh instead of a full redesign?

$400 even with NE2 is still a bit pricey if one of the less expensive smartphones would be better or just as good.

    some things 700p has that 650 doesn't:

128 MB of Memory (60 of which is storage)
    1.3 Megapixel Camera
Memory Slot for SD and SDIO

and others but i think 700p is a lot like the 650 it just has more media features

I never used the 700p, & I also never used the Data and/or internet plan.

I just used it as 1 converged device. It served me well!!! It'd be nice to have the 700p, but I too can't justify it at the current pricing structure. you could try the eBay route, lbMike... There are several available on auction. I've been monitoring them closely so I can at least dream for free!!!:lmao:

If I'd have known you were serious about a Treo, I'd have sold you my 650. I babied that thing!!! I used the $150 Palm Trade-in program for it to defray a majority of the cost of my Palm T|X!!!

Well my dad ordered a Q and sent it back a week later. The hardware was amazing! It was very small and cool and was built extremely well, however playing with it for just a few minutes I could tell the software design was crap! It took too many clicks to do anything, and brand new the phone seemed to lag between each menu change. Im sure you could get used to it, but the UI was confusing.

Most importantly he couldnt get it to sync with outlook. Period. That was why he had to send it back. It HAS to sync to be useable. I'm sure its not a wide spread problem and we didnt spend a ton of time trying to fix it, but we both know quite a bit about computers and the like and we couldn't do it.

I dont have any experience with the new palm treos, but I had an old 300 at one time at it was great. If you are familiar with the palm operating sysetm you know it is very easy to use, much easier than windows mobile! :p And so I would personally reccommend the 650, as it seems the 700's features dont justify the price as long as you dont need Ev-DO.

In short, I'd go with the Q.

I've had mine now for about two weeks, and granted, the first one had software issues (shuts down randomly, lost data connection), but the one I'm on now is working perfectly.

As for the software being slow, the only lag I've noticed is within the sounds menu, most of the people who experience lag aren't aware that with any Windows Mobile device (especially smartphones) you must periodically select the "Kill All" option from the task manager to close all running applications or else the phone will eventually lock up after being very, very slow. For whatever reason switching an application or (in the case of the touchscreen phones) clicking the red "X" will in 9 out of 10 cases not close the application.

If you're still in the air about the Q vs. the 700 feel free to PM me, as I've used both for several weeks and can explain the ups and down of each, in the meantime, browse on over to cnet.com and check out the reviews.. so far the 700p and w have been getting overall blasted and torn apart, though it is pretty much popular opinion that the p offers several advantages over the w model because of the Palm operating system. The Q has also received high overall ratings from the editors and I love mine.

    Thanks guys for the help!!

I'm still strongly leaning towards the Q, because of the price and functionality. I still have some time to finally make up my mind. Decisions, decisions :headscrat .

No problem, Bro! I have been wavering back and forth about the Treo's and the Q for months now. I'm not sure what I would have done even if you had tried to sell it to me. See how indecisive I am right now???

As I have mentioned before, I most likely will be going the way of the Moto Q, even with its Windows Mobile OS. The price is just right and I'm sure the OS will be somewhat similar to what I have on my Nextel i930 phone. Also, I am used to Motorolas, so the Q is looking more and more like it might be my next Verizon phone.

Thanks anyway, Wiggy!!;) :D BTW, me likes your RAZR avatar!!!

I finally cast my own vote and I picked the Q. I'm about 95% sure of this phone. Once I'm checking them all out at a Verizon store, I'll really know for sure..:D

    Thanks for the help!

The Q won out. Price made the biggest difference. So far I like it, but it has only been about 8 hours or so...:)

Hey Wigs, another reason why the Q had such a strong advantage for me over the Treo 700p is that I have the Moto i930 smartphone for Nextel and the Windows OS on the Q is very similar, albeit a newer version.

So when I fiddled with the Q, the order of things made sense. I did check out the 700p and although it is a beauty, the $399 price (which includes the NE2 $100 discount) was a deal breaker for me. Thanks for your input. Always greatly appreciated from my bestest AZ bud!!!:D ;)

Hey Mike...I decided to get a "Q" as well! I gave the SDA a try...and even though I like T-Mobile, I can't put up with the constant "searching" for signal. Since I'm still under contract with VZW, found out I can do an add-on as a family plan...and will give my V325 to my roommate...who likes that anyway for the VZ-Navigator feature. I'm cancelling the T-Mobile contract tomorrow. Should be OK since I'm still within the 30-days.

I played around with the Q today at Verizon...must say the qwerty board makes it a lot easier to enter things than having to tap it out on a regular phone key pad. Sure hope your's works out for you as well! :)

Oh by the way...where did you get the cool avitar?

Chris, I hope the Q works out better for you than the SDA did for your T-Mobile experience. It's too bad T-Mo didn't work out for you.

So far I like the Q. The screen resolution is phenomenal. I was able to move my contacts from my previous Nokia 6256i to the Q via Bluetooth!! It worked perfectly.

Look for a PM from me...:)
