I'm looking at getting a cell phone but I'll be going to college in the adirondacks in the fall. So I need a service that will work at home(Rochester, NY) and in the adirondacks, but I'm not having any luck find a plan that works in that area. Can anyone help me out?

Did you try Verizon? They usually have the widest coverage. If in doubt buy a 'true' national plan that includes off-network mins. such as ATT One Rate, Verizon Single Rate, Cingular Nation and Spring just introduced Free and Clear America but it sucks.

Icculus - If the zip code of your college didn't work on any providers web site. Then you may want to contact the college, and ask someone which providers work around campuss. And if Sprint dose have coverage at your college & at your house then you should take a look at them. GoodmanR is bashing Sprint because you can't roam more than 50% of the time off their network on the F&C America plans. Allmost everyone will never have to worry about comming that close to using that percentage of minutes off network. If you keep going over that percentage Sprint will terminate your service, but they will warn you a few times before they do. Again if you can get coverage with Sprint at your college & at your house, then you will have nothing to worry about. Let us know what you find out, and good luck!

Budney makes a good point. Call ahead and ask someone at the school to advise. If Verizon provides service there I would check their SingleRate plan. Nationwide LD no roaming. Good stuff.[IMG]

    Icculus,

I have a weekend home in the (southern) DAKS. Whereabouts is your college?

If it's Paul Smith's, then Verizon would doubtless be your best choice. They have very good service there. Indeed, they have the best service throughout the DAKS generally -- although there are specific 'holes' in their coverage where others might be better. And if you plan to hike or travel in the DAKS during your weekends (and depending on which courses you take, possibly during school itself!) and nearby region, Verizon will almost certainly be the bests choice.

The biggest problem with cell service in the DAKS is that it is spotty at best. It is much better in the lowlands and near the villages. Bears don't generate much revenue! And my experience has been that if there is service, it is almost certainly Verizon.

But I must disagree with Ozgard about National Single Rate. Unless the area around your college is not served by Verizon, you want to go with America's Choice. You only want NSR if you will be roaming off of the VZW or affiliate network -- and there are few places in NY where that is true. In addition, you get NO free weekend or evening time with NSR -- probably a VERY important consideration for a college student. (And if the college is NOT served by Verizon, you don't want them anyway! Regardless of the rate plan.)

    Success at college.

"Spring just introduced Free and Clear America but it sucks" ((never heard of spring wireless)) LOL

But he might want to check out SPRINT PCS free and clear america. IF there is coverage in his area
