    So i have had Alltel wireless internet for about 5 months. I use a UTStarcom UM150 USB modem. The first 3 months were fine, i had very few issues with the service. But since about 2 months ago i have been unable to connect at a reasonable speed, and my modem is acting strange. It will tell me that i have 2 bars of service (which is what i usually operate at, due to my distance from the tower) and on my Quicklink Mobile program it shows i have no bars... or 1 bar at very best.
    Also, before 2 months ago my average ping and DL/UL speeds were acceptable .. at about 200 MS and 700-900kbps Down / with 100-200 up. Now i cant even get above 200 kbps download with a measly 60ish Up.

    i am SURE i have not provided enough information to locate my problem in just what i have said but if someone could start me on the right track to figuring this out it would be much appreciated

    Does it say 1X? Try forcing a PRL update if you can in the Quicklink software.

    Having similar problems!! This has been for the last 3 months. I have updated PRL on my KPC-680, drivers, firmware...everything! I just changed my IMSI (MIN) number to one that my bro has on his card and it now has doubled my download speed and back up to where I was a year ago...about 700k (EVDO).

    My question is...what does the IMSI determine? Is it a different server I'm logging into now?

    PRL = Preferred Roaming List

    PRLs are basically files that tell the cell phone which towers to use and which ones to not use. As far as updating it you may have to call tech support. :\

    Close. It tells the phones the orders of the preferred roaming systems. The PRL entries on an Alltel phone tell it what state it should set the roaming indicator on (steady/flashing) as well. A SID may be missing from the PRL but that does not preclude the phone from using it, It "prefers" the entries on the PRL in the order they are placed on the list, but can use other systems at need.

    Oh. I always thought it was towers because that's what I was told. Thanks for clarifying.

    Well...semantics I guess. A single SID can be spread out of a large geographical area and consist of a whole lot on individual towers.

    Thanks for the info guys.

    Also... any idea why my Modem would tell me at times that i have 2-3 bars and on the quicklink mobile program its telling me i have no bars? I tried reinstalling the program and i still end up with the same issue

    Decreased speed/reliability with EVDO card

    I, too, had some of these problems, which required numerous discussions with advanced tech support. BTW, I always got passed through to the advanced techs, as soon as I told the first responders that this was an ongoing issue. Eventually, I bought a new EVDO/USB card (Pantech 175) and my speed and reliability problems resolved. Where I live -- on the fringes of service -- my best down speed is ~135kbps; however, when visiting Mobile, AL, I get 2000!

    Tech support, in response to my question about my voice signal not matching the data signal, said that the units do not necessarily use the same towers -- thus, the "bars of service" may be different.

    I'm still only receiving 200-300k on the average. 3am on Sunday mornings gets me about 600k. I sure hope that Verizon gets our tower updated to RevA. real soon. I'm tired of paying $60 for the slowness. Although, I'm not sure that just moving from EVDO to RevA would help if the issue is the number of users on the tower. Any thoughts?

    Rev. A is faster. What happens in Hutch or Wichita CTX? Keep complaining about the stinking towers.
