It isn't easy trying to purchase Verizon's top phone (at the moment) at a decent price. Big Red finally got wise and removed the "instant" savings from the web site, replacing it with one of those fabulous $100 rebate debit cards... How nice of them. So purchasing a Droid X from their site or the store sets buyers back $300 ($250 in my case with my NE2 discount) off the top, not to mention California's lovely "phone taxed at FULL retail price, not discounted price" tax penalty (which would add another $50 to $80!). The phone is worth it, IMO, but still, that's some heavy dough there...

So lo an behold, AmazonWireless runs a special last weekend offering several cool phones for 1 cent (for new activiations). For upgraders, like myself, the prices vary depending on the phone. For the Droid X? The upgrade price was $50! No need for rebates, NE2 discounts or anything else. Though the phone is on back order with them at the moment, I won't get it right away, but who cares! I saved a fortune on this phone and got it before they moved the price back up to $150.

I have been holding out for an iPhone, but can't any longer. If Verizon gets it next year, fine, I'll wait until the next upgrade. Life will go on and I think the Droid X will do quite nicely for the next 2 years. :browani:

Thanks Charlyee. The only hitch is the shipping delay. AW's website says it ships in "1 to 2 weeks", but then their estimated ship date on my order isn't until early January! I think the "estimated" date is more that it could go out that far, not that it actually will.

I'm really hoping it doesn't take that long...:(

I had a similar thing happen to me this August then I ordered my Incredible. I saw that I was going to wait 1 to 2 weeks and ended up getting the phone within the 2 week window. Hopefully, all will go well for you.

Thanks guys. I will probably be asking you all some questions as I navigate the Android learning curve.

I'll post back when the phone arrives.

An amazing deal. I think you'll like android, I certainly do. I'm still learning the interface (new thing I learned today- adding widgets). :)

Hey twopiece, great to see you back here again! Yeah, I could not pass up this deal. I'm not surprised it came from Amazon.

I've played with Android phones before, but I have to admit, I find it a little confusing. I expect that, though, as it's a new OS to me. It's just that there are SO many things you can do with it. Almost like there are TOO many choices and options.

This is a phone I can see myself using for the next two years. I didn't want to mess around with a cheap phone this time. I wanted something substantial to take me into year 18 with Verizon. I would like an iPhone, but the Droid X more than equals it in my opinion. Even though there are new and greater phones coming out in the near future, I feel the Droid X will more than hold its own. :)

According to Amazon, the phone is now back in stock, so it should be sent out early next week... We shall see.

    That is great news!

You will have no problem learning to navigate Android. My mom (who isn't tech savvy) says it's easier to use then her old dumb phone. :)

Congrats on the early Christmas present!! :D

I upgraded (at&t) through amazon several years ago, and I was very pleased with their price and the upgrade process. :) Plus with at&t's mail in rebate that was offered at the time, I was effectively paid $50 to take the phone.

To make things even sweeter, I was able to purchase some accessories (from the Verizon site) at majorly discounted prices. I got the leather carrying case for just under $19 (which included a 20% discount off of $25), and a mini-USB car charger (that will work on any phone using this type of port) for $15 (on sale 50% off, normally $30).

So for less than $100, I've gotten the Droid X, a nice case, and a car charger! Not bad at all! THIS is the way to upgrade. :D

Hey Mike, good to see you too. Seems like ages since I was last on. You have to let us all know your thoughts on the Droid X. Trying to get my wife to go Android but she wants to wait for the Iphone on VZW.

I was trying to wait it out for the (fingers-crossed) Verizon iPhone, but I couldn't any longer. I've been using my backup phone for the past few months and even that phone is coming apart (the notorious Nokia 6256i hinge crack issue).

The ONLY reason I wanted the iPhone is all the apps available, which are more plentiful and varied than Android (at the moment).

I should get the Droid X tomorrow, so I will give a review and overall update in a few weeks once I've had a chance to really try it out.

iphone apps may be more varied, but the some of the paid iPhone apps are free on Android.
I have a feeling that by your upgrade time, you'll forget all about that iPhone infatuation...

I have a baby android phone - not a 1GHz, but it does what I want it to & then some after rooting to Froyo . And I get Angry Birds for free, too!

I don't believe you will have any shortage of apps on Android. I actually wish there weren't so many for me to try out and play with. :D

I'm hoping you're right. I've had an iPhone before and really liked it. So I hope using Android will make me forget about the fruit.

I've heard so much about "Angry Birds", I'm gonna have to get this game. :D

Just got the phone today. Got it fully charged and activated. Have been playing around with it and have some concerns. I find Android confusing so far. Not as simple as iOS. I will give Android time, though.

Question: On one of the home screens there are four contact quick-access icons. How do you delete who was set up for one of them? How do you change it to someone else? Also, is there someplace to view active programs/widgets/etc. to minimize battery overload and to monitor active and overall data usage? What am I missing here?

Other than that, the phone is beautiful. What a display!

    Thanks Joe! ;) Will do.

Congrats Mike! Good choice, I think the Android/Motorola combo is the way to go. As you were a former iPhone user, but not a "fanboy", it'll be interesting to hear your feedback comparing Android/Moto to the iPhone, since it'll be more fact-based rather than emotional. I think the app selection for Android is very good and growing daily. Any app-maker worth their salt will be coding for Android now-a-days, Android has gotten to big to be ignored, and while there are some "fragmentation" issues, I don't think they are as bad as the Apple fanboys like to beleive they are ;)

To monitor battery useage, go in the Main Menu to: Settings -> About Phone -> Battery Use
There's no native data counter in Android, but you can download "NetCounter" for free in the Android market, and that will show you your data use on a daily/weekly/monthly basis, as well as seperate wifi and cellular data. Very nice, simple app. ...oh, er, while you got the Android Market open, don't forget to download "Cellumap" too ;)

RR, I just gave you your 94th "Thanks"...;) And I will look for both in the market place.

Also, I played with the phone a lot last night and figured quite a bit out, still learning though, but I'm happy with my progress after one evening. :D

I am testing out Verizon's $15 for 150MB data plan. If I need to upgrade to the unlimited data plan, I can do so and have them back-date it. I am using my home internet WiFi for all of my data needs on the phone and seeing how I can manage my usage off Verizon's network. Of course wouldn't you know my local cable Internet provider, Charter, went down last night...

All is back up this morning or I wouldn't be posting this. The most amazing thing about the Droid X is the screen. It's freaking huge and incredibly beautiful. Plus stellar Moto RF is present. I'm getting better signal than I ever got with my old LG Voyager.

One of the MOST important and necessary downloads I did last night was "Angry Birds"... And now I see why this game is so popular. Got the regular free version and the seasonal one. :p

Will update later with more Droid X adventures. :browani:

Congratulations on the X, Mike. :) It is an excellent phone. If you have any questions, be sure to let us know. The best way that I got used to the X (and Android) is by playing with the phone and the OS.

I just found a good Droid X Walkthrough online:

Be sure to watch your data usage carefully. I have the unlimited plan and it is easy to go over 150 MB (even on a light usage month). I am looking forward to your review.

WOW! Our Time Warner internet went out for about 3-4 hrs last night. And Moto having better RF the LG is not surprising. lol

Glad to hear you are liking your Droid!

I was frustrated the first 15 minutes as I tried to figure out how things worked. I couldn't get it to do what I wanted it to do. A short time later I started figuring everything out, so all is very good now.

Glad to know you are beginning to like it.

I would caution you about data as well. I have WiFi at home as well but still manage to burn through 400mb / month easily. :)

Btw, I use 3g watchdog for data, it has a widget and you can set your parameters up. It is accurate to - 5% and came in very helpful for keeping track of roaming data.

I appreciate the caution, Charlyee. And I've rectified the situation to avoid any issues. Thanks to Erik (Gamer), he told me about a killer deal Verizon has that includes unlimited texts, unlimited data with 450 anytime minutes for a discounted price. I was able to get on the plan (not everyone qualifies apparently), and am now paying the same as I would have with just unlimited data and no texting. So no more limited data issues. :D
