I'm thinking about playing around with Cingular's GoPhone!! It's been about 6 months since I've had a new phone and I'm getting the shakes!! I've read up on the plans and difference in coverage but I don't like the phones they offer for the "Go" package. Can you/I use any Cingular phone for the GoPhone deal? If so, do you have to play full retail for phones not included for pre-pay plans? I'm looking to have a decent phone, not one of those throw away phones!! Thanks for any help.

You can use any Cingular or unlocked GSM w/ 850/1900. Yes you will pay full retail for any other phone. If you go to a corporate store they may be nice and give you a slight discount on the phone. And of course their is always eBay.

I am like you right now itching to get a new phone. I am leaning toward GoPhone right now as it is GSM and the cheapest month to month then getting another Sprint line or signing up with T-Mobile on a basic plan. I would like to get the Cingular 2125 or Nokia 6682. :)

Also, if I get a GSM phone off of eBay, what do I do next? Can I go to a Cingular store a buy a pre-paid SIMS card?

You buy pre-paid calling cards that have codes that you have to call in to add the minutes to your account. The SIM's themselves to not come pre-loaded with minutes.

I went to the Cingular store today and inquired about their GoPhone plans. Budney was correct about having to pay full retail for phones not included on the GoPhone packages. But, if the phone has a non service agrement rebate, ie: rebate for phone only; you get the rebate!! Pretty cool since a lot of the phones have $30 to $50 rebates!! Anyone know if the Samsung x497 is a good phone?

I got the Z520i from www.plemix.com and use it as Cingular GoPhone. It was $25 to set up the service and included 25 mins. I ordered the phone and got the account setup and the SIM the day before the Z520i arrived.

PS: I also wanted a new phone to play with until the N80 comes out.....:D

Thanks Charlyee. I only want to spend around $100 on a phone. I got my eye on a few on eBay!! Are you on Pay as you go or Pick your Plan?

Mine is on Pay as you Go but I am thinking of the Pick your Plan since that offers the same coverage as the regular plans and believe some of the roll over etc. The Pay as You Go is only with Cingular (no roaming partners) and so much less coverage.

The Cingular web site says the Pick your Plan has no Roaming. Maybe I read it wrong.

Sorry my answer was a bit confusing, the Pick Your Plan has no Roaming or Long Distance charges, just like the regular plan.

In the Pay Per Use if there is no Cingular coverage in an area, there is "no service". eg. Wausau has Einstein PCS and my regular Cingular plan gets full coverage and the Pay per Use..nothing.

    Did I make sense?

That's what I figured you meant. Just by looking at the 3 different coverage maps for the services in WI, I figured there is no roaming on the Go plans!!

Wait a minute, now I am confused. I understood that roaming was allowed on the Pick Your Plan at no charge. That's the only reason I want to switch from the Pay As You Go to the Pick Your Plan.

When I looked at the Pick your Plan page and info on it, under Roaming it says N/A!! I didn't ask at the store but if you look at the 3 different coverage maps for our wonderful state, you will see coverage differences between the pick and pay plans. So maybe pick has some roaming?

I think you are right, it does, here is the verbage above the plans from the Cingular page, and I take the statement to mean that there is roaming at no charge. I hope we are right. :)

PS: I think Gamer did verify that it does.

Cool! I figured that "N/A" meant no Roaming!! That would be great if some kind of roaming is included!!

You are welcome, I got that from Gideon. You are right, they don't sell any tribands with 850, only with the 900. They do sell alot of quads though.:)

These plans are somewhat good, yet they still have their pros and cons.

For instance, you don't have to sign a contract, a credit check isn't required, and you don't have to continue the service if you don't want it anymore minus the cancellation fee. However, you don't get free text messaging, free nights and weekends and if you are a talker, like alot of people, you really need those free minutes. You could probably end up spending more on the prepaid plan than on a contract plan. Also, I hear that certain services may not be available if you don't have a contract (for instance, no access to an unlock code when you want to trade services on your cingular phone, i'm not 100% sure, but im sure that services are limited with prepaid plans). It's good, but its not perfect, just like a:twocents: lot of other plans with other companies.

Those are good points stan. I was looking into Cingular GoPhones just because I'm a phone junkie and would like to comare them with VZW in my neck of the woods. I get bored with the same old phone after a few months and need a new phone fix!!!

Yep. The pick your plan is a better plan imo (at least for the coverage).
