So I got bored tonight and made a custom google map of the cell towers and sites back home....check it out: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=U...538,-73.710365&spn=0.133657,0.31929&z=12&om=1
Wow, that's cool I didn't know you could make your own maps with Google. Guess I need to start playing around with it and figure out how to make one as well.
Thats pretty cool yankees, i too didnt know that was possible. It would be pretty sweet if we could have something like this for the cell site gallery, add the towers to the map as you add them to the gallery.
Yeah, the only problem is that I don't always know exactly where the tower is that I took the picture of. In this case, I know where each site is by memory, but for most I really do not know. But yeah, anyone can create a map now. I wish you could make custom icons.
Maybe 1 day they will be customizable to either add a picture or a link to a photo & you would be able to make different markers.
Well the closest you can get to that right now is the ability to embeed a picture within the marker. Already did that for most of them though.
That is cool. I have all my local cell sites on a map saved on my computer. Maybe I will transfer it to something like google maps sometime when I get a chance as this may be a great resource for others.
Going back and looking at this post, this isnt a bad idea. Would anyone be interested in opening up my current detailed map, and adding their local area to the map?
Give this link a try, see if it works: I've shared a map with you called NYC Area Cell Sites: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&msa=0&msid= 103389741482320714748.000001124aeb5e7c725a6 ANyone should be able to edit it. Please dont mess with my already places sites.
Excellent! Isn't that Alltel territory? Btw, all new towers posted on the map will appear in page 2 (and eventually page 3), unless exported to a KML for use in Google Earth.
It was unil earlier this year, then they sold their cellular license to verizon, so verizon has the cellular and pcs license, sprint also has a pcs license
I encourage everyone on this forum to add to this map. It's about time we have some sort of group effort at this. I think this could really turn out to be something nice.
It is an excellent idea, I will see what I can do tomorrow. Thanks for getting this started Yankess Palm850/v0100 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.11)
My pleasure, this forum needed a little something, its been dead around here. I am actually quite excited about this. I should probably add my known towers in Buffalo from my 4 years there, and now my Lanisng, MI towers. (quick questions to mods: Is this forum open only to people who are in the tower hunting club, or is it available to everyone?)
I dont know, it would really suck if someone deleted it, i dont know why anyone would do that.... I guess im just gonna start another map.
Give my map a few hours to figure itself out. It's not even displaying the edit options, so its just not loading correctly.
There really is no way to back up the maps. The only thing you can do it download a KML file to be used in google earth, which just links to googles copy anyway.
This forum is open to everyone. If you join the Tower Hunting group, it gives you permission to edit any of the submitted tower pictures. That way you can add or update the info for any cell site.
That's the main reason I hadn't spent any more time using Google Maps to map all the sites. If they make it do a true export, then I would definitely invest the time. Creating the maps in Google Earth is an option, but makes collaboration difficult. I also found out that you can use Google Earth to open the Map kml and copy each individual site, but not the whole map. Either way, there's too much tedious work to not have a reliable backup system. Worrying about Google losing the data is not too bad, but one evildoer, or big accident and everything is gone.
Just a question on tower info, how did you find out who is who? Here in Joplin, MO 64840, it is top secret. I have looked up all towers and nothing to be said about Sprint or nextel. I even drove to the tower locations with my aircard and did not notice any stronger signals or I should say a anything under 70 at anyone tower. As for calling local and Sprint, no help from them Thanks
