I was driving around San Francisco, and saw a huge billboard promoting a new wireless internet service provided by Google

Here is the link to the photo I took:

z00m, manually type/paste the URL. When I got the 403, I just selected the address bar and hit enter. For me, it openned a new tab and the picture showed up. I think that website is blocking external referers.

I'm guessing the wireless (hate the term WiFi, reminds me of HiFi) is just for the festival.

Wow that's pretty cool. They should do that in airports that don't have free Wi-Fi yet.

I'll say this again--I think the Google wireless is just a promotion for the film festival. Read the banner at the bottom of the poster. Besides, they would be charging for anything permanent, like in airports. And airports need to be setting up their own wireless access.

Possible, but it might also just be coincidence since the banners are located very close to each other.

    ;)

Maybe Google was advertising the internet before the Film Festival and it could be permanent.

    Yeh wgray8231 you're right.

Probably "SPONSORS", but it's hard to read. Since UnwireNow is based in SF and just getting started, Google may be helping them out. From what I've found, It looks like the wireless network there in Union Square will be permanent. From Starbucks to city governments--what next?

Lots of truckstops already have wireless networks. I think most Flying Js do.

Prisons don't really need 802.11--how many inmates carry laptops around? Maybe some areas for when lawyers come to visit.

Some hotels even offer wireless (and Ethernet) networks.

And I can't stand the term Wi-Fi. It refers to the Wi-Fi Alliance certification of IEEE 802.11 compliant devices. Short for "Wireless Fidelity", it's a play on "High Fidelity" (Hi-Fi) and doesn't really mean anything.
