Google eases mobile map use by locating celltowers Wed Nov 28, 2007 11:09am EST SAN FRANCISCO, Nov 28 (Reuters) - Internet search leader Google Inc (GOOG.O: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Wednesday it is introducing a novel mapping system that uses cell phone towers to let mobile phone users locate nearby services without typing in addresses. Google's new My Location service is being offered in test mode to U.S. users and is designed to expand the percentage of cellphone users of location-aware services, whether or not their phones come equipped with satellite-locating chips. Google Maps for Mobile with My Location automatically informs mobile phone users where they are on a map. Users simply type the number "0" on their phone to move the map to their approximate location. Google is offering the service for free, direct to U.S. consumers, and is expected to eventually introduce local advertising that takes advantage of the location aware service. The company has created the service independent of carriers. The service uses various algorithms to approximate a user's handset location relative to the cell towers nearest them. The service relies on a database of cell towers Google has constructed by using anonymous readings of mobile signals from previous Google Maps users to help locate My Location users. It should work with any carrier as long as you have a smartphone with Windows Mobile, Blackberry, or Symbian S60 3rd Ed. I downloaded it to my MDA and it works beautifully. It found my location pretty accurately. Since T-Mobile does not have GPS capability on the MDA, this is a very useful feature. It is a beta version but so far so good. Me likes!!!
Too bad the "My Location" feature doesn't work in my phone yet. Maybe someday. Other than that, the map seems faster.
It's a good idea, but without cellphone operators giving a correct and current list of all their sites locations, this will rely on half-assed information given by phone users themselves, and therefore give half-assed results. It would be really nice if the operators gave Google Maps current site location lists, but I don't see that happening. Well, maybe in 5-10 years if the new "fad" of operator "openness" keeps up....
I tried it on my Tilt, and the my location feature did not work, but it did use the GPS to locate me. -Jay
I've hit zero (0) on the phone at many different points...and I never saw any blue dots of my approximate tower location. There are no instructions in the app stating how this works...
Sounds like you're doing everything right. I haven't had any problem getting it to work properly on my MDA. Do all of the other options work? I hope this isn't a specific carrier issue?
Yep...I can do traffic....although I haven't tried directions yet. When I start up the app...it starts itself in San Francisco. I hit 0...nothing. I then try to help it by putting in my zip code...to get the map to get near me...hit 0...nothing. This is on my Treo 650.
Strange...Mine worked the moment I opened it. I notice whenever I update the software, it starts in Frisco too. I don't know if you've tried this yet, but what about activating the option through "Menu", on the bottom right and selecting the location option, instead of hitting "0". I haven't used "0" to use the location feature since I downloaded the update.
Hmmm...what version do you have? There is no Menu option on the bottom right. the button there is "Return" The version it gave me was 1.2.0.9
The version I have on the MDA is 2.0.0.11. I wonder if there are different version depending on the device you have. The MDA has WM5 on it. I just downloaded this last Monday when the new "location by cell tower" version came out.
Hmm, I will have to try that and see what i get on the tilt or one of the BB's. This would for sure be a good thing for the devices that do not have built in GPS (that is if Google can get hold of all the list of the cell sites).
Ahhh...that must be it. Google is punishing me because I have a Palm OS device I guess I deserve it :O
Hmm, that's interesting, but I guess that must be it too. This is actually a beta release, so there is hope that they'll have it for all the different phone operating systems.
That is the same version on my Treo 750 Works great on my Treo 750, including the zero feature. Hey quit picking on my buddy Shizam. It seems to be amazingly accurate so far, I downloaded it last Friday.
:lmao: I'm sure he is.....for not having a WM device Thank you Charlyee! I feel like the kid that was just rescued on the playground from getting his tail wooped by the playground bully
