I got a Tracfone as an emergency back-up phone. For my area, they gave me a "Genesis GSM" SIM card... Does anyone know anything about this so-called network? (which, for the record, doesn't actually pick up anything in the zip code I specified... but has good service in surrounding areas -- actually, better service than my primary network, T-Mobile)... Only luck searching online was a privatized mobile network in the UK: Genesis GSM Private Mobile Network - Call Systems Technology Ltd
A clue you could provide may be in the SIM card's number. Reading from the left, you may see a group of digits 310, 311, or 312. These are MMCs for the USA. You may be used to seeing AT&T Mobility as 310-410 (the MNC is 410), and T-Mobile as 310-260. If you find the MNC, you'll know what physical network your SIM is on. COtech
After some research on the numbering system, I found out that my MMC is 410 - so it would be AT&T apparently. Still not sure why TracFone called is Genesis GSM though... Thanks! And also, here is a site from which I found some useful information: https://www.numberingplans.com/
Hmmm... on my SIM cards, the number start with 8901260... and 8901410... but you're right about the 410/260 thing...
...Yeah, both of my cards start out with 8901 as well (which I think 89 is a "universal" telecommunication code and the 01 would be the county code??) ...and then the 3 digits to identify the carrier. I knew that all of the numbers helped to identify things like that, but never knew which ones were which and what numbers were used... and I'm still a little unsure... but I really don't need to know all that extra stuff... I do still wonder though if TracFones allow roaming with multiple carriers - or if it's just with the same roaming partners that are assigned to, say AT&T??
from what I can tell from the Tracfone coverage maps, they allow roaming on the same partners as AT&T... But the roaming partners is based on the SIM that you receive when you get the Tracfone. Some of the Tracfones are T-Mobile based and they use T-Mobile and its roamers.
