Yes, but don't expect Cingular to finalize their GSM overlay anytime soon. That's probably why they are embracing GAIT technology. However, AT&T has not announced that they will be deploying GAIT technology and there are no indicators pointing in that direction. So I don't think they will be using it. Why aren't they? Well, only they can answer that question. On the other hand, T-Mobile doesn't use any TDMA in their system so GAIT is simply out of the question for them. However, if you are asking because you think T-Mobile can use it as a means to quickly and temporarily expand coverage, then I don't think it is in their priority list to downgrade to TDMA. Besides, this will require a lot of work, money and energy that they are not thinking about employing especially now that their future is uncertain. Although, it may be a good idea just like TDMA carriers allow the use of analog.

Well I just want to say that anybody who knows anything about the cell phone industry would know that Cingular and Bell South Mobility are technically the same company. Bell South is a parent company af Cingular . So that means that towers that were once Bell South are now Cingular. I think the problems you experience with your phone are just other interference from other objects or could it be USER ERROR

I am sorry you feel that way. But these times they are a changin'. You are just going to have to wait, eventually the phones will be available to all Cingular customers

I'll touch base on a few of the things mentioned in the past few posts here...

As far as the T62u goes, I've heard from a Cingular employee or two posting on other boards that we might see it in November... who knows? Don't count this as anything solid, but it certainly would make sense as it would mean a major phone release for the holidays.. An unlocked T62u would be pointless as it would only function properly on Cingular... Cingular is the only company using GAIT and therefore would be the only company with a GAIT IRDB file that would allow roaming onto TDMA and analog...

The anonymous poster was correct in stating that all Bellsouth towers became "cingular" towers, so the only explanation for the quality of service going downhill may very well be either inferior RF performance of phones today (I remember Dan saying in one of our previous conversations that his BellSouth handset was a Nortel with an external antenna)... or it could very well be increased foliage and perhaps even new building construction, which 1900Mhz towers would certainly have a problem with..

And as far as the GAIT debate, it would help for most people to actually have an understanding of what GAIT really IS... GAIT is more than just being able to use a handset on both GSM & TDMA networks (like the S46 does)... It actually involves combining the two in such a way that features work seamlessly across both network types and the end user has no idea which type of network he/she is actually on. It uses a single IRDB file which has roaming information for both GSM and TDMA carriers... Here's a link that better explains it than I could ever hope to do. I learned most of what I know about it from this post, as a matter of fact. [IMG]

I finally broke down and purchased a Nokia 3395 with Cingular for $30., temporarily. I plan on buying the T62u or the 6340 when it is released. As it stands the coverage in northern NJ, is the worst. But, I am banking on gait technology to straighten that problem out. A few people told me that using gait will be superior to Verizon coverage in NJ and generally all over. I think I read a post by cryogenic stating that the T62u would be the prefered gait phone. Is that correct?

Ok, I understand GAIT. I've actually read this before. I think someone else copied it from Howard and pasted here. But so far, no one has been able to tell me what is it that you cannot do with the S46 that you can with a GAIT phone. I understand with GAIT there's seamless integration between GSM and TDMA. But what do you mean by "seamless integration"? what features will work differently between GSM and TDMA with the S46 but will work the same on a GAIT phone besides SMS?
