Well, I guess AT&T is really preparing for the AMPS/TDMA shutdown. This morning, I received a "Welcome To AT&T" text. I thought it odd, since I have been with them since before Cingular. Then, I noticed later today that my Alpha Tag had changed back to Cingular (it had changed to AT&T about a year ago). I put my SIM back in my T62u, set it to TDMA only, and tried to make a call, but just got "Your Call Cannot Be Dialed From This Location" error messages. The TDMA Alpha Tag used to always say "Cingular", but now it was "Cingular Extend". TDMA calls still worked for me when I tried it a month ago. Anyway, I logged into OLAM to check my account, and sure enough, the "GAIT FOR GSM" feature was missing. It was still there just last night. So, just a heads-up to the few people still with GAIT on their accounts. It looks like it is being removed pre-February. P.S. - I looked at my "updated" PLMN list, and it seems to be a mix of old and new. There are new foreign networks listed, but the top priority goes to 3 networks, CINGULAR 310-410, 310-150, and 310-170! AT&T 310-380 was bumped back down, a bit.
They probably just shut off the TDMA in your area. They started shutting off some service last summer, and I think will be finished by spring of '08. Someone correct me if I am wrong.
My guess is that they are dropping TDMA from the GAIT plans in anticipation of turning off the TDMA networks next year. Presumably anyone on a GAIT plan is not relying on TDMA for coverage. -Jay
TDMA is still available here, for the moment. It was the GAIT feature being removed from accounts that makes the TDMA part of GAIT phones unusable (except for 911). Also, I resent that "delete this post" remark. It is a legitimate piece of news for AT&T subscribers.
OK. I saw that your next post was immediately after it, and I wondered why you didn't just edit over the original, if you meant that post. My apologies for the misunderstanding.
