There were several articles that mentioned FuturePhone as a way for making free international calls to certain countries. Just dial an access number (based in Iowa) and then enter 011 + phone number. I tried it a few times and it has been a hit or miss because of the busy signals when I call. (also, maybe because the service is popular?). I wasn't sure where to post this so I posted it here.
Yeah, but I don't know who to call overseas. Maybe if I knew the numbers of some of our international members I might, but otherwise I'd have no use for it. -Jay
I don't know any one overseas either, but someone called me recently from overseas... I was curious but I didn't want to give VZW amy more of my money I like freebies
How were you giving Verizon money? I know a lot of people in Europe. I spend about 4-5 hours to Europe every month...some are outgoing and some are incoming to my Verizon line.
Wirelessly posted (Q's Mobile Device: Opera/8.01 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/3.0.6306/1528; en; U; ssr)) I didn't... I don't want to direct dial the international number from my cell I-Dial is not cheap!
If you do it often you can get a plan for $5 a month that significantly lowers your price -- or you can just buy a phone card with an 800 number access code. It's sad... if I have to call, say, England, it's cheaper for me to fire up my GSM with the 3 Hong Kong SIM card in it than to use my VZW mobile.
So, let me get this straight... it's less expensive for you to use a Hong Kong SIM and pay roaming and long distance from the USA than to call the UK directly from a Verizon phone? What is Verizon thinking?
For me to call the UK on my Verizon phone is US$1.49 per minute plus tax, which (it's a ridiculous amount of tax) is about $1.79 per minute. Firing up my 3-Dualband phone and dialing the silly access codes (to call Britain it's **128*1968-44) costs HK$9 per minute for the connexion to Hong Kong, plus HK$0,63 per minute for the call to the UK, with no tax. HK$9,63 = US$1.23.
Sad how they can provide you with international calling this cheap compared to Verizon, considering they have to pay the GSM carrier you are roaming on here fees, route the call back to Hong Kong and then to the UK.
