so who would have thought doing the right thing is not encouraged. I found a blackberry - dropped in fact during the stampeede in Manhattan yesterday due to the steam pipe explosion. Today, I call cingular to say I have the phone - please contact the owner and I can get it back to them or give me an address I can mail it to @ ATT at their expense. Some clearly incompetent operator Amira Martin from customer care in Canada advises me because I am not a customer they won't help me and unless I am willing to walk into an ATT store they niether care nor are willing to help !! This in turn ticked me off - here I have a nice phone, presumably the owner is either looking for it or about to buy a new one and ATT sees it as none of their business. Amira refused to pass me to a manager because I am not a customer ! So for all ATT customers - hope that if you loose your phone, someone who finds it has an account number with ATT. on the other hand, the owner I assumed would have called the phone by now - kind of an obvious thing to do - apparently not. I'd love to think Verizon who I am with would be better but maybe not.
I've walked an 80 year old lady through how to find the IMEI so I could track a lost phone and get it to it's owner. Don't think that everyone that works for at&t is as incompetent as that fool... try calling some #'s in the phone or the most recently dialed #'s would be the best idea. Unless they've had service suspended already. If not, call cs back and they can definately do it by search for the SIM card #.
Wow, I can't believe some reps would do something like this (oh wait yes I can but normally it's few & far between). As Joe said look thru the phones contacts & see if home, wife, kids ICE ect... are listed & call the number, if not look for something that may say work. I found a phone once & did that and they were so happy I found it, and you cut out calling the carrier.
I would totally call some people in the contacts but the phone is password protected. I can call 911 with it but nothing else. I can see on top left he/she has 74 emails as well but I can't help him/her. I guess in the wrong hands the pwd is a good thing but I'm all up for helping - ironic ! I'll bite the bullet and drive it to an ATT store but I am so pissed how little they cared about their customer !! Even by dropping it off I am not convinced the owner will ever see it again. thanks for suggestions in any case !
Unfortunatly then if they password protected the device, yes take it to a corp. store & they will make sure it gets back to the owner. Especially if you tell them it was found in the area of the Steam Explosion, the person could be one of the burn victims & can't even call the phone to see if someone has it.
Make sure if you return it to a store that it's a CORPORATE store. Not some agent, as I've seen agent just take those phones and wipe the memory and re-issue it as refurbished.
the bad part here is that the BB is locked and if it is locked one should be able to see the owner info on the screen (that is if the owner did input the info) if there are no info, then becuase of the BB' security one can not go in to find out who it belongs to and if any one attempts to enter the password over 10 times then it will automaticaly wipe itself out and clear all the info in it. The bottom line I dont think any one at teh at&t corporate store can do to find the owner other than putting the SIM in another phone to find the number and match it to the owner (that is if the SIM is not password protected too) and then call him/her.
If the SIM is password protected, then I'm sure AT&T can look up the customer by the IMEI which is written on the SIM card. I would just try to go to a store that's not busy (otherwise they may not want to help with something that won't pay them commission), and just give them the SIM card so they can lookup the IMEI.
Not all dealer stores screw people out of things. I have seen a few that yes will, and I have seen a few that won't. All in all, It would be great if care would at least help some one every now and then. I have noticed that a few reps, really do help, then some, dont care at all. I get people in the store all the time, pissed off at care.
It's pretty much a two-way street.. CCare reps don't like agents because of the unscrupulous acts of a few bad agents and agents don't like ccare because they're unwilling or unable to help. Agent stores are usually only good for very basic troubleshooting and sales. To the original poster, ccare or a store can look up the ICCID # on the SIM to find out who the phone belongs to.
The IMEI is on a label attached to the phone, usually behind the battery. THe SIM card has no IMEI information. The Integrated Circuit Card ID (ICCID) printed on the SIM card ties in to the subscriber's account information.
With the PIN from the BB ,tech support could get in and see what emails are set to forward to it and email that person if it hasn't been deleted out by now ... Some of those Canadian rent-a-reps(the ones that respond like trained monkeys) irk me to no end.
Hey try calling back and asking for a supervisor, they will get scared and have to answere your questions no joke, i work for the company and i have to deal with new cust reps all the time who only want to deal with somone if they are getting something out of it.
Good for you trying to help. Sort of reminds me of the lady in Germany who beat a guy with her umbrella when he attempted to return her keys that she dropped crossing the street. I guess your only option is to take it to a store.
any luck yet? my brother's company is two blocks from where the explosion was and the use Cingular/ATT blackberry's. I'll have him ask his IT department if they are missing any.
If you call *611 from the phone, the phone number will pop up on the customer service rep's screen and they can try to contact the customer IF there is an alternate number listed, but further than that, what else can you expect over the phone? best bet is take it to a corporate store if you can't get a hold of any contacts from the address book.
I am guessing from the OP's lack of response, he took it to a Corp. store & it has been taken care of. (we can hope & hopefully it wasn't one of their's or that any of them were hurt by this leak)
guys many thanks for various posts - I am very enthused to see a bunch of good people out there. Sorry for delyed post - I hadn't expected any more interest. So here's what I did. I was able to dial emergency (the only option available when it is pwd protected). As it is dialling 911, it shows you the last calls made or received and also the phone number of the blackberry. I first tried to dial the voicemail box but it had not been set up. I also sent a text message to the number - no reply though. Finally I spotted that one of the numbers dialed was a Pfizer number and as you may know, Pfizer was impacted by the steam blast and their building was closed for a week - it is literally on the corner of 41st and Lex where the crater from the steam blast appeared. With this in mind I returned it to lost & found at Pfizer. (ironically they in turn said they don't keep track of who gets what blackberry but I'm optimisitc the person saying that was not too clued in !) Anyway - I am glad it is in house of the company it was issued from at least - and there is a good chance the owner will get it back. The exercise was an educational one - in the process I learned a lot, found a superb forum and members and collectively we worked around the process that is clearly not in place to help non revenue generating scenarios. Thanks again for all posts - next time I find a phone I'll certainly post here for help. Thanks again !
Thanks for the update. It is realy nice to kow that there are honest people out there and who realy care. What you have done was comendable.
I agree it is good to know the status of this & that you brought it to the company that it belongs to. There is hope in this world yet when people like you post things like this. Thank you.
absolutely, amen to that, etc. In reading this it reminded me that just a few weeks ago, I had found a Verizon subscriber's LG handset in a Mickey D's parking lot. In that case I dialled whatever they had in the phonebook, as "HOME", and left a Voicemail on their answering machine. Within 15 minutes they called me back from that number, and we arranged a meet back at the same Mickey D's parking lot, so they could get it back. Ya should have seen how happy they were.
I had a similar situation, it was a 16 Y/O's phone & the parents were real happy it was found & returned. Too many people want to scam & think they are entitled to a device if they find it, without trying to get it back to the owner. Glad your situation was a good one for the person as well.
Forums like these with posts like this are the perfect reason to belong to forums. Come to a forum, work together, and look what happens. Granted, the original poster took care of the issue, but others were willing to assist. Glad to see everything worked out.
You guys are proof that some honest people still exist out there. It would be great if some of them worked for AT&T Customer Service Department. I know that all the apples aren't bad, but I keep encountering bad ones. Where are all the good ones? Canada?
